I bought 'Bärenpark' at the weekend because bears are cool. The positive review on 'Shutup/Sitdown' probably helped too. The rule book is in German. Just downloaded an English set but quite tempted to try to read the original first.

The box came with a set of dividers to help organise things but couldn't understand the diagram so everything just went into bags instead.

Looking forward to giving this one a go.

Has anyone played 'Istanbul'? Someone recommended it to me the other day. It seems to ring a bell but I dunno.

Yes, on a few occasions. I quite like the 'drop your minions across the city' mechanism, and there are various ways to get victory points so if one area is not looking promising you can focus on something else. I usually never seem to get the right rolls in the gambling den.

My board game collection has stabilised at approx. 100 games. I'm trying now to either trade or sell games to make room for new ones. Some of my most recent new ones include one I think MaliA would be interested in, Flamme Rouge. It's a cycling racing game for up to four players. Each player controls two riders, one sprinter and one roller and each rider has a slightly different deck of cars. Each card has a number which represents the movement possible that turn. On your turn, you select which rider you want to activate first and then draw cards from that riders deck. You choose which card to play and play it face down, the put the remaining cards from your hand face up underneath the draw deck. You then do the same for the second rider.
Attachment:
Flamme Rouge 1.jpg

Once everyone has selected, you all reveal your cards at the same time and starting from the lead rider, each rider moves their programmed amount. After movement is finished, starting at the back, any bunch of riders with only one space between them and the next pack automatically move up to meet them as part of the slipstream action. Then any riders left at the front of a pack take an exhaustion card, which has a movement value of two and clogs up/slows down your deck.
There's a couple of extra rules for ascent/descent but that's about it and there are various map layouts to try.

I really enjoy it, it's fairly light but with interesting decisions and some strategy required. Almost no downtime, high levels of player engagement and an exciting finish. Plus there's an expansion due soon which introduces another couple of game elements (cobbles!) plus ups the player count. I'd recommend it, great game. Think it's about £30 on Zatu games.

Another game that may be relevant to interests; Formula D. I've been aware of this game for ages, and it was the subject of a particularly enjoyable Tabletop episode with Grace Helbig and Hanna Hart. I worried it would be too much of a light game for me to enjoy it though.

Luckily, a friend was able to lend me it to let me try before I buy. I really enjoyed it. It's more than roll and move, you also have to figure out if you should shift up or down a gear which determines the size of dice you roll. This is important, including looking two or three turns ahead to decide the best tactic. Corners mix it up by making you stop a certain number of times in each one and you also have wear points that you can be penalised if you brake too hard or shift down more than one gear at a time.

Very accessible, my mother in law played it with us and had a great time. Components are great, the wee gearbox is really neat and fun. Big game board and cute wee cars. Overall, very happy with this game and I've now bought my own copy. I won't plan a game day around it like I would with Eclipse, DoW or MoM but it's great for pulling out over drinks and having a laugh, with lots of excitement and tension at the end.

Thanks for these SDG. 'Formula D' is great with loads of players and cars crashing into each other all the time.

Formula D looks almost as good as Formula One. ;)

Cycling one looks good too. Just bring them to the cottage.

Not technically a board game, but Jem and I played Quiplash over the weekend, and it was a lot of fun. Would be ideal for Cottage funtimes.

Bärenpark. Bears are awesome. I've seen them roam free in Yellowstone, saw one maul Leonardo di Caprio at the cinema, and watched countless animal documentaries just to see our ursine friends. I'm such a bear fan I once felt extremely distressed seeing a chained up dancing bear in Moscow's Gorky Park. So, would I go to bear park to watch bears in captivity? Probably, if they were well cared for.

'Bärenpark' is a simple tile-placing game where players build their own internationally renowned ursine pleasuredomes. Tangrams seem to be the big fashion in game design at the moment, and the parts you need for the park are all different sizes and shapes for you to place on your board. The mechanics are quite simple: take a piece from your hand, place it on the board, then do whatever the icons you've covered up tell you. These are either about taking pieces for various parts of the supply or taking another board to connect to your park (up to four). Complete one of your board tiles, and get a bear statue for more points. And that's it.

It was light, but very enjoyable with enough tactics and 'take what I need, or take what the other player wants' decisions to keep people interested. I also liked how the rules contained an explanation of why they included koalas in the game ("everyone likes koalas") despite them not being bears, just to appease the pedants. Most likely, I'll host a bear night at Cottage.

We then finished the evening with a round of 'Sheriff of Nottingham', but I played abysmally and lost badly. Once I got the app working, scoring was quicker however.

Every game turn, three percent of the fuel evaporates, unless you’re the British before a certain date, because they used 50-gallon drums instead of jerry cans. So instead, seven percent of their fuel evaporates,” explains Phillips. “Every fucking turn you go around and make a pencil note of how much fuel you have. So, I have been slack and done eff all with the Battlefield Beex Company thing, until two days ago, when feverish preparations restarted. Terrain and stuff. There is an outside chance I might have a workable game for the Cottage.

I played some more Heroquest last night with 3 friends. It was great as usual.

I've thought of something this morning though and haven't checked the rule book. Would anyone know if the characters are allowed to backtrack on squares in the same move? For example, roll 12... walk forward 6 spaces and then walk back 6 on exactly the same spaces.

That's what I thought but I didn't know whether there was anything in the instructions that said you couldn't? Not that we follow those too closely anyway.

We're working our way through the quest book at the moment but I'm thinking of making my own quest with some funny challenges in (like, your character just found a Gameboy. Get a high score on Pac-man with one life to earn 250 gold pieces) or something like that.

Then at the end of the quest, I was thinking of having the map invaded by a Dreadnought from Space Crusade which would lead us on nicely to play that.

Spot on! I'm going to kill off all the hero characters which would allow the Space Marines to take over. What could possibly go wrong?

The only things you can't do is move diagonally, end your turn on the same space as any other character, or move through a space if the occupier says you can't (and that rule should be immediately house ruled away).

Fans of conpetitive netrunner might want to know that card rotation is a few days away, so junk the first two cycles of data packs. Also, corecset has been binned and there is now core set 2 which is similar, but dropped lots of cards and added some in from the first 12 datapacks.

We live in a post Jackson Howard world, now.

Exciting Netrunner news I mentioned!

https://waypoint.vice.com/en_us/article ... se-on-life

50% win rate last night, as my Evil Corporation knocked on the runner's door and shot him twice in the head in one game and scored out 10 points in another after the runner survived 2 attempts on her life. I got shot in the head as the runner, and lost by 1 point in the other game.

Then, we played 3 player star realms.

Starting 'Pandemic Legacy 2' on Wednesday with the same band of heroes I did the first one with. Already quite excited and thinking up hilariously funny names for the characters. Had a skim of the rules last night and it looks like a very different game to the original, with a map that is initially mostly hidden and a mechanism that appears to be a reverse 'Pandemic' spreading hope rather than death. But we'll see.

Really enjoyed playing the 'Prologue' ( a sandbox round to get used to the mechanics) and first month of Pandemic Legacy Two. As with the basic game we were all set to win the first proper round handsomely when we turned over an epidemic card and the game beat us. So we had to play that month again, just like the first Legacy game.

Much hilarity was had naming our characters and initial sea bases. In the end we went for 'Titanic' in the North east Atlantic, 'Atlantis' in the southern Atlantic, and 'Brexit' in the Gibraltaran straits.

Looking forward to the rest of the game. Non spoiler photo of the set up for the prologue:

So what happens when you finish the game, sell it? I'm guessing there's no replay value.

Can't replay it because you have to destroy cards, scribble on the board, unlock new rules, twists, and pieces, and generally play a different game by the end from what you started with. You just have to treasure the memories, although someone's thought about framing the final board and some character cards.
Given that we played around 20 games of the original, we certainly got our money's worth from it.

I think we’re considering buying this for Christmas. Well... the first one, I mean.

Hmm, though it is very expensive and says best with four players.

Yes, not sure how it would work with fewer, or if it is enjoyable going all the way through but with a changing group of players. Part of the fun (for me at least) was that we agreed to meet almost weekly to play through it, and we still joke about various incidents along the way even now.

I remember we found it very hard to tear a card up for the first time. Like writing in books, it's just something that there's a huge taboo about which is really hard to overcome.

It's not spoilery to note that the prologue and first round work like a kind of 'reverse Pandemic'. The cubes you can see on the board are supply cubes, which we can produce, deposit, and move around. When a city gets infected, you take a cube away. When there's none left, the next time it gets infected it gets a green plague cube. These remain (at least for now) even though you can resupply them. If you are on a town with a green cube at the start of your go, you have to scratch of an exposure panel on your card and possibly suffer Bad Things. It took us a little while to remember to remove cubes when infecting rather than add them.

Of course, as the game progresses these mechanisms are likely to change but, well, spoilers.

Also, the basic rule book contains my favourite rule of the year so far:

Quote:
You cannot do the Sail or Charter boat actions [equivalent to flying in the normal game - K.] over land. We hope you understand why.

Did we play Pandemic when you and Sal were over? I remember Horse Racing and... Takeneko, maybe? Probably Balderdash. We have Cranium... you should come over and play Cranium. It’s not fancy, but it’s fun.

Don't think so, but we are up for anything! Wait, that sounds a bit wrong.
