Most people who aren't arseholes wouldn't slag off someone's cake just to make them cry. Unless we're positing that being on a cake programme is something like the situation created for Milgram's famous studies into obedience.

Well, yes. And Top Gear's Clarkson is the oafish, relic of his time, wishes the empire still existed character. I am not saying that Clarkson is the reverse of this, but it is written that way

It forms a watchable narrative with good and bad. The contestants probably shouldn't invest so much of their hopes, dreams and ambition on making cakes but as they do, that fine line between victory and emotional breakdown. It is a constructed reality.

They're not crying because he "slagged off their cake", they're crying because they did a shit job in a competition.

In other news (via Popbitch):

Didn't Clarkson say he was busy writing the script for that week's show, or something?

The Bladerunner one?

That was alright (certainly better than the series before it) The full series on Dave was better again than the mini series, not seen this latest one yet, but I'll probably watch it tonight

It's telling that I, being a person that can quote the first 6 series almost verbatim, forgot that it was even on. I only watched the last series once through and can't remember a thing about it.

Oh, wait. Lister fell in love with a vending machine and they met Jesus. I think. Maybe

I've just watched this: Scotland and the Klan: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b07yjk0j about the KKK and its links to Scottish ancestry and clansmanship. There are photographs of hanged men, so please be warned about some of the historical imagery.

One of the most frightening things within was that so much of the recorded rhetoric of the KKK seems to be indistinguishable from a D. Trump speech, also the numbers of gate organisations still active in the U.S.

Is it illegal to be in the KKK in the US, or is it protected under "free speech"?

They gave numbers of hate groups and said there was a large proliferation of KKK identifying groups (I guess NEO KKK, if you will). Maybe by being a 'KKK identifying group' it is technically different enough to distinguish you as different from the KKK? I'm not sure to be honest, but they had 'KKK'written on their flags.

It might also vary by state, I suppose?

Also a case of whether what they're doing is illegal, as opposed to just wearing a white sheet and being dicks. The Klan Act passed during Grant's presidency was able to crack down on almost all of their activities such as preventing access to the polls, but after Reconstruction ended it fell into abeyance.

It's legal, but most people joined the NRA instead.

Yes, a quick Google suggests it is legal, but that there have been calls to classify it as a terrirust organisation which would then make it illegal.

Is anyone keeping up with the new season of Red Dwarf? It's terrible, right? Right. Then fourth episode isn't bad-bad but the whole series really needs someone who knows about making TV shows to give it a massive kick up the arse. The editing is terrible (see the end of episode 4) and the 1980's Saturday night television laughter-track is appalling. It's spliced after every line regardless of the "joke" and it's so fucking loud that it sometimes drowns out some dialogue slightly. Goddamn, it's so sickening that they could actually make this great if it wasn't such a massive hack job.
