Just caught the first part of Dominic Sandbrook's cultural history of Cold War Britain. As enjoyable as his previous series on the 1970s and his range of books. He uses a great mix of archive footage and anecdote to give a real flavour of the times. Worth catching. |

Just watched last week's ''Imagine' documentary on Machiavelli. Really good, even if you're not really into the game of politics. Even better, it has Peter Capaldi reading excerpts from 'The Prince'. |

I'm glad they're trying to get the HD channels as the default. Annoyingly, you can't edit channel numbers on cable, so I'm stuck with 108 for BBC1 and some bizarre numbers for the rest. There should be an option to replace the SD version of a channel with the HD version, I reckon. |

The iPlayer has started broadcasting things in HD now that weren't before, like Only Connect and University Challenge. We access iPlayer through our TV however, and since the change these HD progs are really flakey to load, sometimes having to press the Play button many, many times. |

Just saw the first part of 37 Days, the recent drama series about the miscalculations in Europe's chanceries during that summer of 1914. Enjoying it so far, though Margot Asquith could be slightly more vicious. |

Really trying to enjoy the current Stewert Lee show, but the cutscenes with Chris Morris interrupt the act and get annoying. And the less said about the epilogue visualising one of each show's routines the better. Should we punch him in the face? |

It's high time that Armando Ianucci himself did something with or without Chris Morris. Time Trumpet remains one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life and anyone who hasn't seen it is strongly urged to seek it out. I'd forgotten even how strong the cast of included 'interviewees' is as it's got Richard Ayoade, Matthew Holness, Adam Buxton, Stewart Lee and Mark Watson in it. I've got a full set of AVIs of it at home and can probably make it available somehow if anyone wants. |

Did anyone see the pilot for 'Game Face' last night? It's a standard sitcom, and doubtless available on 4OD. Nothing particularly original about it, but it had me laughing out loud on several occasions, and I thought that it was brilliant. The rant at the book club was perfect. |

If you're going to bring back a well-loved sketch show, make sure that A) You bring a few new ideas to the table or, failing that, B) You make sure it's damn funny.
