JUST FOR CLARIFICATION: I do not think that Kern means it in this fashion. I am well aware of his affinity and love of Americana. It's just a phrase I have seen him use a lot recently and it was starting to irk me.

By deep South, they mean the colonies, not the Isle of Wight.

That has been in TV before, relatively recently. It's really interesting television (though I came to it with very little previous knowledge on any of the things being discussed).

Also, a quick search suggests he's used the word "colonies" 7 times since 2011.

Alternative facts! ;)

I clearly need some new material. :)

No offence was intended, and certainly none was taken from Myp (although our views on colonisation are probably closer than he thinks).

Let's get back to talking about TV.

Surprised I didn't catch it before then! Although, since the BBC 4 newsletter stopped I only tend to hear of good things if I remember to buy a paper on a Saturday or if it gets mentioned here. Should start using the Iplayer more.

It comes across lording superiority over Americans for some unknown reason, when we're just as bad.

I think you're trying far too hard to be offended there. When people refer to America as "the colonies" the joke is because they are a global superpower, massively bigger and more important than we are. It's not "lording superiority", it's wryly acknowledging the opposite.

Err, no. It annoys me because I've been specifically told by Americans who live here that they don't like it. It's eye-rollingly cringeworthy.

Meh. There's plenty of other americans to ask.

Has anyone been watching Hospital? It's a documentary focussing on the impossible decisions that are made on a daily basis in our hospitals.

It's brilliant. It's riveting. It's fascinating.

And it will make you fucking furious with what is being done to NHS. It will fill you with bottomless admiration for the people working under this pressure and, by and large, doing an amazing job.

So firstly be warned there are spoilers for Shepherds Crown in there.

And I think the hardest parts for me to watch were some parts where you see Terry really struggle to find the words he wants (and getting frustrated by it) and then when both his daughter and one of his best friends break and start to sob

I suspect I'm very late to the party here but police procedural No Offence is pretty fucking good:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Offence

It's great to see Joanna Scanlan in a serious role, and I'm probably a bit biased because I'm slightly in love with Alexandra Roach, but it's solid and incredibly compelling stuff from the writer behind Cracker and Shameless. The second season doesn't quite stand up to the first but it's still very good stuff throughout with a good mixture of 'case of the week' plus constantly ongoing narrative.

Rich Hall's Countrier than you

Idiosyncratic look at the history of country music. You have to love a genre this much to be this cynical about it. Many standout sequences, but his rant about the Soggy Bottom Boys early on sets the tone for the documentary. In other hands, the recurring motif of him trying to punt his own country song about his working dawg to various giants would tire quickly, but it's well paced and serves to illustrate the differences in styles over time and location rather than be a simple filler. Even if you aren't into country that much, it's worth spending the time on this. No Rhett Atkins, alas.

I watched an episode of Harry Hill's Alien Fun Capsule on ITV last night that I'd recorded on Thursday.

Some Harry Hill is always better than no Harry Hill, and his surrealism and attitude is always a joy but it suffers from 'Monkey Cage syndrome' of too many people and not enough time. We also are more interested in Harry than in whoever ITV have managed to book. I might record the rest of the series and have it on the PVR in case I need something to watch late one night, but I can't say this was anywhere near as vital TV viewing as 'Burp' was back in the heyday.

It also says something about Hill's confidence in the show when he opens it by describing the format as so thin you can roll it up and smoke it.

We watched the first series of Cuckoo recently, comedy with the headteacher from The Inbetweeners, it was mostly hit over miss so pretty good overall (some actual lols in the Ecstasy/Dexys Midnight Runners episode). A new series of that Dara O'Brian gaming show 'Go 8 Bit' starts next month. I enjoyed the couple of episodes I watched but didn't catch all of it. Potentially more interesting though is that this time around each episode will be followed by 'Go 8 Bit DLC' which will be a separate review show hosted by ex-Eurogamer person Ellie Gibson (who's in the main show) and various guests. I like Ellie Gibson's writing a lot and hopefully she'll be entertaining enough to carry that segment even though actually reviewing games on a TV show is generally pretty pointless.

Timeshift's episode on the fire service is a well-presented piece of social history, with a good mix of vintage footage and interviews. I was surprised by how late the municipal system began, and painfully reminded that progress usually only comes after a disaster. An enjoyable hour.

I was frusturated by the episode on the telephone system because despite some swizzy graphics and the dolcet tones of Victoria Coren-Mitchell it felt too bitty and trying to cram too much in rather than expand on the various segments in the detail they probably needed.

PH33R my insanely up-to-date TV reporting, for I have recently started watching 'The Thick Of It' on Netflix, which I have never seen before at all.

Only done the first two seasons up to now and trying to watch an episode or two per night.

I have no explanation for why it's taken me so long to get round to watching it as I've been 'aware' of it pretty much since it first broadcast, and love the people behind it.

Obviously it's fantastic, although it is quite odd to see Chris Langham in there, especially when they start doing some of the 'nonce' routines. (I appreciate the situation with Langham is quite a complex one, BTW.)

I enjoy it. It's reasonably formulaic, but that's US network TV for you.

The one thing that winds me up about Elementary is the mumbling. Everyone seems to talk in a... natural tone, like you would in a normal conversation. Which on TV can be really hard to pick up on, especially if there's background music to contend with

Dan Snow on Lloyd George (BBC 4 yesterday)

Overview of one of the most fascinating prime ministers. Although it's only an hour so gives the key events in brief rather than the detail all of them deserve, it's worth catching for an understanding of the great man. Dan Snow's continual references to his family connection got irritating at the end, but other than that his presentation is compelling.
