Right I was a bit under the influence last night as it was my first evening off the 24 hour on-call rota for over a week so of course one celebrates this with the finest Pinot Grigio that Tesco have to offer in box form for under twenty quid.

COHERENT THOUGHTS:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
So the community of women have run away from the Saviours (albeit not very far, surely in a place that is really quite big such as America, they'd have got more than a few miles away, eh?), and have a stupid shoot-to-kill policy that makes no sense, then about fifty of them armed with high-powered weaponry manage to completely miss Tara with several million rounds, making enough noise to attract anyone and anything within a 50 mile radius. VERY SMART.

I assume that Tara had deduced that the two guides weren't actually going to let her go and were instead planning to kill her, hence her escape attempt, but this was not very well indicated and had to be worked out retrospectively. In a show where so much time is given over to fluff and filler, this really could have been better explained.

The return to the zombie bridge with Cindy was stupid. Of all the ways to approach the situation that was probably the dumbest, Ian has already pointed out the look of astonishment on Cindy's face when her clip of ammo runs out, despite the fact she's the one who's best with guns apparently. Not only did she not think to reload, they'd also apparently done no assessment of how many shots were in the clip, how much cover she could thus provide, and so on.

The 'Heath-esque' zombie. Really? We're going with that absolutely insane coincidence, are we? THAT'S THE BEST THING YOU COULD THINK OF?

Also, another new community and group of people. Because we need that.

ALL THAT SAID it wasn't a dreadful episode on reflection, Tara is a pretty good character, the narrative structure was alright, and there was some emotional heft as Tara learns all the bad shit that's gone down in her absence.

Then again, the extent to which the show is content to completely ignore the main storyline in favour of characters we haven't seen for eons (I couldn't even remember Heath's name until Tara called him Heath), means the whole thing is plodding along aimlessly at something of a glacial pace with no particular sense of direction. JUST LIKE A ZOMBIE HA HA LOLS.

Yeah, didn't like that one.

Had forgotten who Tara was or why she was there and then she waan't killed at least five times when opportunity arose. It needed brooding danger, not a rubbish paranoid camp

On the plus side Tara is well fit and I totes have the hots for her.

If it were some random secondary bloke character featuring prominently in that episode, I'd have been more aggrieved.

But yeah, TWD is basically crap now, they should do the decent thing and cull it this season with a proper send-off, but they won't do that because MONEY.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I know there's that whole 'OH WE HAVE TO BE TRUE TO THE COMICS!' thing going on, but fuck that, killing off Glenn and Abraham was fucking idiotic, two of the better characters annihilated from the roster after they'd needlessly fed other good characters to the zombies or whatever other random shit has been bumping them off. Assfaces.

IT'S NO BOJACK HORSEMAN. Or Stranger Things. Or Fargo. Or Black Mirror. And fuck knows what else that does compelling storytelling about three billion times better than TWD has managed for quite some time.

I thought it was a really good episode.

Also, the young girl clearly checked her ammo, realised she was running low, and had a look of resignation on her face, not amazement.

The fake Heath was stupid, but other than that I thought it was strong, and the community's location and policy made sense.

It's never said it's a lesbian commune. If anything, they express some interest in finding her male companion to see if he'll join them. I bet Heath will be kicking himself when she tells him what she actually did.

It's explicitly stated that it isn't a lesbian commune; Negan just killed all the men.

Yes but it makes it a lot more interesting if you imagine it's a lesbian commune.

I mean, the whole programme is so bad now that making up your own storylines is practically compulsory.

OMG the filthy things Tara got up to last episode, it's like she'd totally got over Denise really quickly, even before she realised Denise was dead thanks to her latent psychic powers that I also made up, and was onto hot lesbian orgies in a heartbeat. Momentous TWD experiences, classic season of a classic series, that just keeps the lesbian action coming thick and fast.

I actually thought that episode was a bit of a slow one, and a bit too long. First one this season that hasn't really done it for me.

Very nearly turned this off somewhere around the 24 minute mark, but persevered to the end. The Negan character is nothing more than a semi-pantomime villain with a penchant for torture and terrorising women, total waste of a very good actor to my mind.

The thing that really blew it for me was:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Carl didn't take the shot on Negan. He was clearly on a suicide mission as there was no way he was going to get into the compound, kill Negan, and get out again. AND HE HAD THE SHOT. He had Negan a few feet away, with a powerful automatic rifle AIMED AT HIS HEAD, and he didn't take the shot.

Everything after that was basically just nonsense. Negan is depressingly one-note and quickly gets boring. Watching him and Carl chat for extended periods of time? Not very interesting.

Is that the mid-season finale? I hope so. I'm going to start watching Westworld.

Nah, that's the set up episode for the mid season finale, where it will all kick off and end on a cliffhanger.

Yes, Kevin is definitely one of the strongest characters in the franchise.

Oh well at least it's the end of season finale tomorrow, which means TWD will go away for a while. I need to get Westworld watched.

Midseason finale, a step above what we've had for most of Season 7 at least.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The first half could have been completely jettisoned IMO, or at least condensed into five minutes. I don't recall anything happened, apart from Rick and Aaron apparently losing their minds and trying to row to the houseboat thingy in a smaller boat that was clearly going to quickly sink in the middle of all the zombies. (And which they readily acknowledged themselves.) This felt terribly shoehorned in just to get the episode a tick in the 'has a zombie in it' column.

The second half however was a lot better, in fact the entire episode should have just started when Rick and Aaron returned to Alexandria.

Negan seemed a little less pantomimish (although I think the 'where are your guts' routine probably played out better in the comic), it was all quite tense and well done, yay Spencer got killed, fuck knows how Rosita missed Negan at point-blank range, oh Olivia got shot as well and Negan made more fat jokes.

If we were supposed to get all emotional about Rick and Daryl's reunion it didn't much work for me, and that sequence at the end where they showed all the faces for a few seconds each seriously overestimated how much most people care about this lot, see also, final sequence with Rick and Michonne.

Oh and then customary post-credits teaser.

Overall then, most of the first half was disposable trash, most of the second half was solid - enough to bait the line to make it worth tuning in again when the second half of the season arrives next year sometime.

Not the best Season (so far) but I'm far from hating it.
Still one of the best things on TV at the moment for me.

Daryl's fringe is really getting to me though.

Kevin is awesome and I love him.

I missed the teaser at the end of the show. What was it?

Assume next half of season will be Rick and friends and the sad Kingdom chap teaming up?

Enjoyed the episode. Not sure why they suddenly think they can beat the impossible odds though. Sure, Jesus is like a fucking magician and they have one gun, but why is it now different to a week ago when it was hopeless. I don't quite buy the incident at Alexandria as a reason to flip their options.

I would love Negan to finally be killed by Carol, as she takes up violence again in a "Seriously, I have to do all this shit for you?" way, reluctantly saving all their asses again. She's such a good actor.

It was the guy from the houseboat thingy, the one with the barbed wire wrapped round his boot, spying on the Alexandrians using binoculars. (I assume he's the 'owner' of the houseboat and wrote the 'you still lose' note).

So he might have a part to play in the upcoming shenanigans, or it could be another one of those pointless 'fuck you it means nothing' misdirections they like to put in there all the time.

Anyway, it'd better kick off at the start of the next episode, once Negan finds out that Daryl has escaped and killed one of his men, on top of the two that Carl killed, he's going to be after kicking some retaliatory ass. If they decide to devote an episode to a stray dog we last saw in Season Four, on its quest to find a tin of Pedigree Chum, I shall be cross.

I'm with hearthly with this one. The show keeps on being stupid but i invested too much time on it to drop it.

I just disagree on him about Tara. She's rubbish.

And Negan is a really silly villain, and it really annoys me his speaking manner and his back arching thing. Someone please shoot him already. Is it that hard?

Haven't watched it and don't think I will. I was aware the season had resumed but the break of two or three months has crystallised in my mind just how mean, gruelling, grinding, incoherent, directionless, poorly written, appallingly paced, filled to the brim with magically transforming kitchen utensils, and let's simply call it what it really is, fucking boring, that I find I have not even the slightest residual desire to inflict any more of it on myself.

My Netflix watchlist alone is about three miles long, and like everyone, I only have so much free leisure time to do the things I want to do - and TWD isn't taking any more of it up.

So then TWD, you were great, then good, then average, then poor, and now you are the weakest link - goodbye.

Oh yes, and I'd forgotten about the tiger, thanks for me reminding of that totemic beacon of its descent into total shittery, as it means I'm not now running the risk of seeing the ridiculous thing on my screen again.

As someone who gave up a bit after the jail series, the best thing about the show was Hearthly's write-ups of his self-harm viewing sessions :(
