I think the problem with most potatoes is that they are horrible full stop if purchased from the supermarket. You are lucky if you get a week before green sprouts appear everywhere.
I bought a couple of 25KG sacks from the local pick your own place early October and they are brilliant, keep them in my garage in the sack and get out what we need on a weekly basis.
Variety is red desiree, they are covered in dirt so really lean themselves to peeling before cooking, so nice though even now I maybe get one sprout among 6 or 7. Will be gutted when this last sack runs out and we have to go back to getting them from Tesco
Also bought a sack of onions at the same time, again find they supermarket onions are soft and crappy on the shelf. These have lasted well so far and are always nice and firm. The block at the farm said they will keep all winter if kept well.
