Oh and how do I build a roof?

To build a door:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Code:
PP.
PP.
PP.

A 2x3 grid of planks. You'll need a workbench first (which is a 2x2 grid of planks). You make planks by punching (before you make an axe at least) tree to make blocks of wood, that you can place in your craft box, to turn into planks. (4 planks for each wood block). Press I to get your inventory).

Placing blocks:
Any block can be placed against the side of any block by equiping it (number keys) and pressing right mouse button. You can thus build out of the side of your walls to cover your roof.

Bear in mind you can delete the block you connected it to and it will float in the air quite happily. PROTIP: FLOATING CASTLES.

OK - stick and what for a torch?

I might restart - I'm on a desert island chain which I'm not sure is ideal

Desert? Not many trees? Maybe best.

Coal to head the torch.

Ah. I have no coal. When I try and go digging to find coal, it is too dark to see. Because I have no torches. Because I have no coal.

I'm stuck down a massive natural hole (fell down huge number of blocks, and died. Couldn't let my loot perish, so returned and dug straight down to reclaim it. Found my first gold (didn't realise needed an iron pick axe to mine that - I;ve wasted a lot of gold that way), and plenty of coal. Which is all great, but it's full of the undead. Quickly built a hidy hole base camp, but going to be rough going building a way out.

THIS IS MINECRAFT.

Hmm, restart. You should be able to find your first coal quite near the surface. Especially in cliff faces.

I like that your first torches are precious mind.

Top, of a tree? Good idea. In a pinch.

But bugger. Pro-tip: Don't mess with your skin whilst playing. Just returned to my game to find it had reverted me back to my castle. Don't know how much progress I've lost.

:(

well, the hissing turned out to be two enormous spiders. I hid under ground for ages and when I eventually tunnelled out, the bright sunlight was delectable! There also appears to be a pack of wolves near by.

I haf found Iron! :D

You can wood-pick it, can't you? Can't wait to get some proper tools. So far I've got a two-story house, well lit, with stove, workbench and chest. I've found one promising mine working too. And a scary ink black cave with a probable suicidal drop.

I love this game. I almost regret I've a house party starting in a few minutes... :S

Think you need to cobblestone pick. You should only really use wooden tools long enough to get enough cobble stone to replace them. Far superior and last a lot longer.

Woo, sometimes I worry when I throw a huge recommendation out there and people drop £8 or so on it, so glad it's not just me.

It's weird, I've just got back from france (which was lovely, despite that drunk thread) and having done so much the past 8 days or so it is just divine to be sitting inside whilst it rains sucked into this game in a way I haven't been since maybe the amiga days. No, since I sank days into SMAC.

It's so wonderful to just sink time into.

Back to an early question, don't worry about how fast your going, remember dimmers has almost super human gaming abilities. When I decided to build the castle walls and tower (out of all the cobblestone I had mined) it only took a little while. Most of the time I was pratting around. I like slowly exploring.

oooh, interesting. From the devs blog:

Quote:
The rationale for Redstone
“But why”, some people ask, “are you making Minecraft programmable?”. The reason is, adventure mode!

The three main game modes when the game is finished will be:

* Creative mode. You can build anything for free, and there’s no health bar, and no inventory.
* Survival mode. There’s a health bar, an inventory, and you need to gather resources to be able to build.
* Adventure mode. There’s a health bar and an inventory, but you can’t destroy or place blocks, you can only use items.

(You can combine at least the two latter game modes for different players in multiplayer)

I foresee a future where people can design “challenge maps” in creative or survival mode, then share them with people so that they can try to beat them in Adventure mode. Being able to create interesting puzzles or trigger events requires some more advanced programming than the sand and water based stuff we’ve seen so far, yet still I don’t want to introduce real programming into the world.
I think the Redstone Dust (which is, and always has been[*] the official name for the red stuff) fits fairly well with the pseudo fantasy theme of Minecraft, and it will certainly have more uses in the future, mainly for alchemy and possibly other forms of magic.

Also, I’m a huge cellular automata nerd.

[*] I made it up last night.

As it stands today, I think the game is easily worth the money it costs, but if even half of what he promises he realises then......

Reroll craster. You be screwed. You're not going to get much of anything in a desert, and even if you leg it elsewhere you'll always respawn there.

Also:

Climb a hill and scout your way back. Remember any land marks? Next time at the very least build a nice single block tower to help you locate your way back.

Just fell to my death trying to build my stairwell out of the epic pot hole, when it got dark and I was trapped half way without light. Waiting till day break to try and return and finish the job

My first world was a snow world. I recreated to get a grassy one. Now I have a massive cloud level tower festooned with torches to act as a beacon.

Immediately after leaving that comment I got lost when I fell from the stair well and tried to return. So now I can't find either my castle or the pot hole.

However in my wanderings I've found a FUCKING TREMENDOUS WATERFALL that runs down a mountain and forms a river. I've started a second base here and am going to have to make a series of expeditions to link these places together. This new place is infested with creepers though. One was just staring through the door of my hidey hole!

I really hope he doesn't add a map. It's fun to be lost in a game again.

One coal with one stick (not plank) directly below it.

See this guide: though it is very spoilery so be careful. http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting

Are you sure it's coal, and not a flint? Flint is occasionally dropped by gravel, coal can be seen in the rock.

Although we are in no hurry, you can't even use the furnace at the moment. Might as well get to grips with single player then start the epicist Beex Towers once it's stable.

Um, how's everyone doing? Good right? Yeah. Yeah. Good. Cool. Diggin' mines I bet, huh? Yeah. Well. Cool. Minecraft, eh? No time for that now. No. I got a party. A big house-party.

Yeah. Watch me, I'll be drunk and everything. No time for Minecraft me.

No time for this game. No.

No expanding my house and exploring for me. Groovin' to be doing.

Yeah.

This is superb. I've just dug myself out a basement and now I'm using the stone to build Hadrian's Wall to keep the bad things away.

Well, I still don't have any torches, and I can't find my original home, so I built a new one under an over hanging cliff. It went dark, I descended the escarpment and kaboom, some blowy up thing killed me as I reached the floor INSIDE my castle! :'( :DD

I haven't been able to find any coal to make torches yet either and spend most of my time cowering inside my house. Occasionally I venture outside where the frustration and fear gets too much for me and I lash out, smashing up some rocks and sometimes even murdering a cow or pig before I succumb to the never ending fear again and run back to my house, peering out the door and cursing at the monsters outside.

Getting torches makes this game a million times more fun, because you can do stuff indoors while it's dark outside.

Oh man. This looks like lots of fun, but I'm still working on my new dwarf fortress.

After abandoning the first one as the bugged military left me doomed, I started building an impenetrable, self-destructing fortress of nightmarish death for the unwary. It's going much better.

I'll have to have a look at this when the fortress finally caves in on itself (which I'm designing it to do as a last resort, after filling it with water).

I'm a house cowering-type too, no excuse either, since I'm yet to encounter a monster except the one I saw in the distance and it's five nights in.

Dudes, do they home in on you? How aggressive are the monsters? Will they try and get in when you're tucked up inside your house?

Monsters, brrrr.
