Bobby, ye've got a canal stump that extends to your double helix. I've left it rough at the end so you can decide if you want to keep it/ tidy it.

Christ, the guy has had 4,000 sales in the past 24 hours. That's ~£32k at €10 a piece.

Hmm. The ever so slightly excessive summoning is making it rather unlikely I will bother returning to this.

Can't really say it affects me how others choose to play the game. Still get a lot of joy out of mining for minerals and creating interesting architecture.

Is it possible to turn off the echo of the #summon commands from the server?

I will say that the scale and impressiveness of some peoples work has backed me off a bit because I've realised that I just can't "compete". That's not a complaint btw :)

And it's more to do with the amount of time I can put in rather than whether you can freely summon materials.

But it's probably holding my attention less now that you don't have to mine every block to build, as it feels like less of an accomplishment somehow..

No, I don't mean compete in that sense. There is no way to "win" after all.
It's just that if you were setting out to make an impressive mark on the landscape, it has to be pretty damn impressive these days :)

I'm not stopping either! I just don't have the time to drop in as much as I would like to.

The fact that what I have built now feels a bit inferior is also a result of that. Just saying!

I see what you mean. It's difficult to be arsed with multiplayer when there are people who can put so much time into it and dwarf anything you could ever hope to do by the next time you log on.

I'm not complaining, as I don't have the time to play it anyway, but if I do get time I'll only pop on to see what people have done instead of trying to do something for myself.

Fair weather miners. I hope it takes you two months to tunnel out of a single player cave-in.

True, but at the minute it's kinda impossible not too. I mined out a huge 64x64 area and it produced a huge quantity of coal and stone and iron. But then I log off and it's gone. I'm just trying to maintain a rough equilibrium between what I have mined and what I summon.

But until chests work, then it isn't survial, it's just fancy creative.

Part timers. Fad onistas. I was only mentioning to A_X the other night about how much I enjoy that each of us have their own style in buildings. From Craster's suburban impulses to Dave's moon base death pit.

Despite you moaning part timers, this is my latest thing I was working on for the last few days.

Destroyed my previous double helix and constructed a quad helix with a nice garden on the top. Seems to trap cocks at the top quite often. Loads of cocks in my fortress. And swine.

Anyone else feel... uneasy about building straight on top of dirt? I'm finding myself digging footings down to rock before I start building now.

Given that my massive uber-structure is made of dirt - no.

But now it has had grass grow over it all, so it's not visible on the big map, I might stone-clad it.

Hmmmm...

There's now a canal that runs from The Bay of Curiosity and Egg to Khazad Dim. I dug it with my teeth and fingernails in case I offended by summoning a pickaxe.

Post of the week for me. :D

Soon as I get back home and process these pics, I'm getting back into Minecraft, both single and multiplayer. I'm glad I've had this break though - it was the most intense gaming I'd had in years, playing that.

I wouldn't worry about that. I'm quite happy with how my buildings are coming along even though they aren't nearly as impressive as some. I still play SP a fair bit too.

I have to say that I'm really interested to see where he goes with that, sounds like he's looking to make more of a game out of it with set objectives and stuff.

It's not difficult to get going with it though. Most of the stuff I've done was all over the course of an otherwise boring Sunday, with a couple of little touches over the next couple of evenings. Admittedly, nothing of mine is quite in the Khazad Dim leagues, but I still like it.

My problem now is that I've just moved in with the gf and we're not getting broadband installed for another two and a half weeks. All my internetting has to be done at work! No Minecraft at work. :(

I was loving SP at the weekend. Started from scratch, built a hut, did some digging then turned the Hut into a glass walled villa. The faffing around made the achievement more fun (not least, having to plan where you are going to position 50 glass blocks). Also, looking outside at night, noticing something outside which I didn't like, and then spending 3 day/night cycles (fixing in day, quickly throwing up walls at night to shut me in) to sort it. I also like having the bad guys.

I don't think it'll happen, but it would be great to have a new map on the server when MP is fixed to start from scratch with rules and stuff.

I had a go at single player over the weekend, but didn't really enjoy it as much.

I built a nice wooden cabin with a door. Then night fell, and the monsters came out. Unsure of how secure my cabin was, I decided to use my 20 spare earth blocks to jump up and build a column to hide at the top of. This worked out well enough, but was boring, so I dug back down to roof level, and promptly got attacked by something firing arrows at me.

So I hid back in the abin until daylight, whereupon, the baddies were still clustered outside my cabin. I pondered what to do, at which point one exploded and destroyed most of the walls. The others then filled em with arrows until I was dead.

Boo-urns.

The clue's in the name, guy. Dig a mine, stick a door in the way in, and stay underground at night. At least until you've built a Sturdy Castle of Defence +2.

Actually, it might happen. I've been thinking along the same lines. If the server would run it, I'd be tempted to keep both maps active at once; one with unlimited summon as a creative mode, one with the full set of restrictions that single player has, including night and monsters. It probably couldn't cope with two instances, but I could change them back and forth or something if that was what people wanted. It'd also resolve the "allow or ban summoning" problem too.

I'm sensitive to the "this stuff is all so brilliant I feel slightly put off making something myself" angle; I feel that way, a little, myself. So I went off into the woods and built a little stone cabin with a view tower instead and thoroughly enjoyed myself even though it only took half an hour. The thrill of creation is still there; you don't have to measure yourself against the skills of the Daves and the Dimrills in this world any more than their colossal gaming scores make cheevos pointless for the rest of us.

My mine comes out the back of my arsecabin and is a lovely, easy to walk staircase which ends right at the bottom of a cavern of doom. Which is currently full of Bad Guys who are trying to get up. I'm now digging a relief shaft to flood lava down to create an unpermeable barrier to the bottom of the stairs, although meanwhile, there are a load of doors blocking the shaft.

I could just block the stairway with stone of course, but then that would be giving in.

Then yesterday afternoon I left the top door open and was jumped by a big spider coming from the outside. Arse.

I don't think it'll happen, but it would be great to have a new map on the server when MP is fixed to start from scratch with rules and stuff.
Actually, it might happen.

Given the amount of time it may take Notch to make MP fully workable, we'll all be playing Cities XL by the time it happens, so there may not be demand from people, least of all me, with my faddy faddy ways. Fad.

Arse.

See, now that's brilliant. That's the sort of "trials and tribulations of a hard working dwarf trying to make his way in the world"-simulator we need.

A thought: once inventory and chests and furnaces work properly I'd like to see the summoning turned off but the same map kept. It would be like a fall from a technologically advanced age back to where everything has to be done by hand. But all the amazing buildings and artifacts from the past would still be there.

Or, whatever :)

IDEAR! Summon only on watah, lavah, cloth, glass, dirt, cobbles and coal. Plus the usual health, boat and tools. Just fucking do it to stop the whinging. The endless shrill locust whinge.
