As you'll see from earlier in the thread, I had that a few times. The trick is to keep at it until you find coal - once you have coal you can spend your nights underground in safety. Absent that, you will need to spend the night hiding on top of a column of earth or on top of a tree or something.

Might someone need to add DP to the 'trusted' list at the Beexworld?

My way of combatting the 'other people's stuff is waaaaay beyond what I can do' thing is to just make all of my stuff underground. Probably no one will see it, but I'd like to think someone might stumble along and appreciate the whole 1 evening I spent doing all that rubbish.

Heh, I've been building an underground town/village in my SP game. Might try to expand it to a city so I can build some sky ceiling scrapers.

I don't see why people are worried about what everyone else is building. Just find your own spot on the server and build what you want. My weird, mazelike castle is never going to be hugely impressive, but I enjoy adding to it and maybe some other people might poke around it at some point and find the Secret Wall or the Secret Shrine or just take in the view from the Glass Tower or do the Death Dive. And if they don't, that's fine.

I can go see Dimrill's stuff, say, and stand in awe before it, but that doesn't make my castle any worse.

Exactly. I don't understand why anyone could view it as a competition to make better stuff than your neighbours. That's just massively odd thinking.

Doc, do you wanna try running two maps as a test? A brand new 2nd with just the health, furnace, tools, water, lava, coal and boat summons I mentioned above? Cobbles and dirt wouldn't be needed on a new map.

I can pretty much guarantee it won't work. The old crashy server had 756Mb of RAM allocated to Java and would regularly run out. The new one has 1250Mb allocated out of 2Gb total and is (yes?) fine. That doesn't leave enough room to run a full second instance. My own stuff needs about 500Mb or so.

Other than that I'd be up for it, but we just don't have any jet powered rocket pants.

I think I'd maybe deal with it by swapping them over, maybe. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays would be free-summon creative. Tue, Thu, Sat survival. Sundays dunno. It'd help keep the game fresh I think too.

Also, until he fixes chests, I think not having summon is downright hostile to people who only want to dip in and out. I, for one, would have been spending 50% of my time digging for and then making iron picks.

I agree with you and Dr Lave, that's a great idea. Tho' the laid-back day known as Sunday would be a ideal day for the free-summon creative, IMO.

:this:

Ironically, considering the negative feelings some have felt here towards free summoning, a Minecraft server for the community another forum I frequent lost quite a few regular users because the lack of freely useable #summon command made playing the game too restrictively time-consuming for many. I think the server owner has recently done a u-turn in the last few days, however.

Incidentally I am rather intrigued by the possibilities of multiplayer survival. I'm guessing that more co-operatively built structures will be constructed. I think. We'll see, eh?

My issue isn't there - I am largely indifferent to summoning tools/cobblestone etc - It's that rare/exotic materials don't stay rare and exotic if people summon them at will.

I'd agree 100% on that. My obsidian farm is beautiful, and where's the fun in mining if gold/iron/diamond is summoned? In fact, I demand obsidian and those ores are added to the blacklist please.

I think I agree. The gold atop my throne and the mossy stone round my graveyard have all been dragged up from the centre of the earth and are all the sweeter for it.

Tools, anything stone, glass, etc. are fine, though. Making my castle I'm typing #summon 4 64 and #summon 44 64 a million times a day.

But where to draw the line? Should sponge be summonable? How about bricks? Snow?

It's a bit tricky.

I think I'd maybe deal with it by swapping them over, maybe. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays would be free-summon creative. Tue, Thu, Sat survival. Sundays dunno. It'd help keep the game fresh I think too.
This sounds perfect.
It would be more perfect if it could be made to broadcast the air raid klaxon a minute before teardown, Silent Hill style.

I'd probably get round to buying it just so I could wait for that.

New list from here http://pastebin.com/LZb02w5g :

1: smoothstone
2: grassy dirt
3: dirt
4: cobblestone
5: wood
6: sapling
8: Water
9: Water
10: Lava
11: Lava
12: Sand
13: Gravel
17: Log
20: Glass
44: Halfstone Single
50: Torch
62: Furnace (Burning)

That's my suggested list. Keep the tools and health summon kits also.

I would consider adding sponge too, as it is only available via a summon and can be used for some exciting and interesting schemes apparently :)

So, you all like building lego but you only want the computer to sort out certain colours because it would ruin the excitement of some colours? And you like to spend more time on digging up / forging the special colours to keep them special?

Still baffled, and so for that reason, I'm still out.

I'm happy to implement this if that's what people want.

Hmmm, it appears item whitelisting doens't work in this server wrapper. Arses. I may need to switch to a different one.

Give the rest of the day for feedback on the list, I'd say.

I'd add in boats as an individual item. they break easily and it would be a pain to summon tools every time you need a new one.

Yeah, of course -- I was just testing.

If you could store stuff in the MP game, there'd be no need for summoning at all. You'd be able to keep everything you'd mined and created with no problems. As it stands, you can spend the whole day mining and creating tools, only to log out or even get booted out due to an error and lose all of it.

So, the simple solution is to allow people to summon things, that way they can reclaim the things they lost when they last logged out.

However! Constantly summoning stuff because you can't be arsed to mine it devalues the whole experience, so until the storage problem is resolved, some element of moderation is needed towards summoning.

Since cobblestone, soil, sand and wood are so very common and since strong tools require rarer ores to make - thus making their loss at log out time an absolute pain in the arse - these things need to be readily summonable. But the rare ores should probably be kept locked up.

Gah, you need to bloody play it to understand. I don't really know why you're so reluctant to take the plunge since it is cheap, it's very creative and it's no more likely to make you a game-addicted junkie than anything else - certainly I'm perfectly able to control how much time I spend playing it.
