So, this comes out tomorrow, and so do the reviews.

we understand from our conversations with the developer-publisher that the new Battle.net service and its online features are so integral to the game that it would be both impractical and undesirable for press to review it before servers go live.

Hmm.

Is it true that this is just the Terran campaign, and that you have to buy the Zerg and Protoss separately when they finally release them? If so, I shall not be getting this until a GotY edition comes out with all of the campaigns.

I have seen the adverts for it. It looks quite pretty, but what the hell is it actually?

WHAT?!!!!

Surely no.

I'll wait for the reviews.

That is what I have heard. Not sure if true or not. Basically, if it is true, I won't be buying it.

Warcraft (not 'World Of') but sci-fi.

So sci-fi RTS. I'm amazed you haven't heard of it :S

It is the first of a trilogy...

I'll be buying it whatever.

If it's anything like the original in skirmish mode, I'm in. My mate and I used to spend hours playing game after game. It was so well balanced and the tactical options were practically infinite. Starcraft and Red Alert 2 are my favourite RTSes ever. I'll probably get this at some point, but I'll wait for the reviews as well.

Quote:
To accommodate for the extensive upgrades in the campaign mode, Starcraft II will be released in three parts. Each installment will focus on a different race for their respective campaigns. Each campaign will consist of around 25-30 missions, and it is expected that most missions will take between 30 minutes to an hour. This means that each installment will likely take just as long, if not longer, to complete as 3 campaigns in the original Starcraft.

WINGS OF LIBERTY, the base installment, will focus on instructing commanders how to command and operate our own Terran forces. You will follow the events surrounding Jim Raynor, leader of Raynor's Raiders, the revolutionary anti-Dominion militia group.

HEART OF THE SWARM, the first expansion, will focus on teaching commanders about how the Zerg swarm is controlled. Extensive knowledge of the Zerg will help assist you in learning their potential strategies and weaknesses. The simulation will also help you understand the motivations and strategies of the Zerg by following its leader, Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades.

LEGACY OF THE VOID, the second expansion, will focus on teaching commanders about the Protoss, their society, and their battle strategies. The simulation will presumably follow Zeratul, as he seeks to uncover a vast conspiracy surrounding the Xel'Naga.

Note that Wings of Liberty is the base product, and that Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void are expansion sets that will require it in order to function. Also, all three races will be available in the online skirmish modes starting in Wings of Liberty, so you will not need both expansions to command the other factions.

Not sure there's anything wrong with that. Each game sounds plenty long enough for 30 quid (or, inevitably, a fiver within weeks of release as the DVD version bombs because who buys PC games on DVD any more?)

yeah, fair enough, but I loved the variation in the last game, this just loses someofthe appeal.

Post subject:  Re: Star Craft II

That's a fair comment - although you can use all the races online anyway, and that's the meat of the game for most people I suspect.

Even in Wings of Liberty you play as different races. You're pretending this game is something that was, i.e., Stracraft 1, rather than something that will be, i.e. Starcraft 2. Given that the campaign will feature tonnes of units ont found in the multiplayer, I can't imagine how it won't be varied. And even if you don't find that the set of units you control is varied enough for you're liking, I've read that the missions and how they play out are meant to be.

Still, I won't be buying it because Starcraft is shit. ;)

I want this, for no earthly reason. I barely play PC games and the last RTS I enjoyed was... probably Starcraft I. If I see good reviews appearing I'm likely to buy on impulse.

Yeah. Dawn of War and Company of Heroes are both fine games.

Dawn of War II is also good, but more RPG than RTS.

We don't talk about C&C4.

Post subject:  Re: Star Craft II

This is going to be the best RTS ever, Starcraft was the best RTS ever up until now, Starcraft II will take over that mantle.

I don't care if it's just Starcraft again with swizzier graphics and even more awesome music, (if such a thing were possible, given the stunningly rousing theme of the Terrans in the original), Blizzard are that rarest of design houses, completely unapologetic about 'We'll release it when it's ready', and it's always very fucking good.

Single player and multiplayer, I'm salivating at the prospect of both of them - it's just taking time out from WoW for SCII that's going to be the hard part.......

Post subject:  Re: Star Craft II

I must admit to looking forward to this too. I mostly enjoyed the first one in single player, since the people I was able to play with at the time were just a little too good for me. I could never sit down and do all the memorizing necessary to be able to be competitive.

But the single player campaign, OMG! I played it through several times, and the expansion as well (the best expansion of any game, ever). Sometimes I reinstall it just to reminisce, and suddenly hours have passed, and I must force myself to uninstall it again lest I loose another couple of weeks of my life.

I can hear him. I can hear his voice ringing pure and true, from sea to shining sea on this. Where were you lot for what you were repeatedly told by me and Pod to be the greatest RTS ever made thus far, ‘Company of Heroes’? Tch. For shame!

FOR SHAME! /Abe Simpson

Neglecting a fine genre because you can’t max out achievements, or run around as a younger, hotter Sarah Palin. And now because Blizzard have come along with Koreakraft you run around like a load of Pavlovian dogs, slathering over some third rate Firefly-meets-W40K imagery! Have you no digity? No sang froid?

Um, me want also. Yus.

Firefly-meets-W40K is obviously the way to go, as Dawn Of Was was better than Company of Heroes.

Not to derail the JC bashing; But why do you guys think they didn't release review copies? Are we going to see many 60% scores or something? At least this way the reviews won't be biased by publisher interaction, and only by rose-tinted glasses of diehard Starcraft fans.
