Yes, but it feels like it's a generation behind. I'm not denying it was marketed excellently, and it's not bad, I just don't like many of the games and the controller and I don't get on.

As for the Wii, it's everything the GameCube should've been, IMO.

I've still got 35 games for my cube, as opposed to the five or six for the Wii (which includes ones I didn;t feel were worth bothering to trade in, like Kororinpa.

Wii gave us better Metroid and Mario. I'm not going to award Paper Mario or ZeldaTP to the Wii because they'd have been 99% as good if they'd remained on their original console, plus I prefer Windwaker to TP. Wii has Wave race, Rogue Squadron, proper Monkey Ball, Burnout 2, Viewtiful Joe, Eternal Darkness, PN03, Mario Kart Double Dash, Beyond Good & Evil, Proper Animal Crossing, SSX3, Mario Golf and F-Zero GX.

My Wii serves as an emulation box, TV web browser and Gamecube wear/tear reducer these days. Having had a go of just about everything that scored well up to the last 12 months or so on the Wii, I'd say it has the following titles over the Gamecube - Excite Truck, Scarface, Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, Dead Space.

You missed Excite Truck from your Wii list. And you then went on to say Wii instead of GC.
Eternal Darkness was a fucking excellent game. Make a sequel, damnit.

Another DS release?

Are Nintendo basing their entire strategy on novelty now in the absence of software (and games you might actually want to play)? It worked for Microsoft, I suppose, there's not one feature I use in in Word 2007 that wasn't in Word 95 and yet I keep on upgrading. But surely consumers are going to call time on these tweaks eventually?

Loads of good games for the Wii. This year alone has given us Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers: Too Many Subtitles, Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Endless Ocean 2, as well as downloadable treats such as Excitebike: World Rally, Bit Trip Void and Tomena Sanner. Ace little console. I use it more than I do my Xbox.

I should be creaming myself over a new nintendo handheld. The DS has been the best handheld (no , console) of the last 5 years.

But my iPhone has destroyed the need for me to carry a DS around, it's not that the games are better, it's just that it's far, far more convenient.

So the 3DS would be relegated to a home console, which destroys the point really.

And if it is 3D that suggests a push away from (sprite) 2D games which will make me sad.

That said, if it is 'only' as good as my Wii, then thats well worth a purchase.

From a customer review of 'World Championship Off Road Racing':
"I got this title today, popped it in to my PS3 expecting it to be pretty good judging by the images on the rear of the package only to be confronted by a game more suited to something you would expect to find on the old PS1."

Sony have put out a sniffy press release (via)

Quote:
In an interview with IGN, SCEA's Director of Hardware and Marketing John Koller said the company is only focusing on the 3D console space right now.

"Our focus on 3D right now is on the console," he said. "There's a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we're going to concentrate our efforts there."

Koller also questioned today's announcement of the Nintendo 3DS, saying he wasn't sure if there is a market for 3D handheld gaming with a younger audience.

"I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable," he added. "Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it's an interesting move but one I'd like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. 8 and 9 year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now."
Slagging the Wii off when it was announced worked out really well for them, so I'm sure this isn't a short sighted move.

Oh yes it is, although it isn't for everyone. The Eurogamer review - here! - is a good summary. Review gets a bit spoiler-y after the second page though, so just read them and know that it got a 9/10.

If you like that sort of thing, I *think* it's possible to import a Japanese copy of Fatal Frame 4, which will run on a UK Wii, and can be patched into English. I might have made that up completely, mind.

NSMB on DS good, NSMB.Wii, OK but frustratingly 'empty' somehow. Felt like the Sonic (2D) series, like the template from earlier games had been reused but with less finesse and some additional features which don't quite gel.

Played Yoshi's Island through earlier in the week. Man, what an awesome game. A depressingly over-looked part of the Mario canon. Find it far more entertaining than Super Mario World these days. YI is more linear than SMW, with far less secrets to find (or worth finding) but somehow, that just doesn't matter. Not that I'm dissing SMW, mind you.

I'm currently debating whether or not to get Red Steel 2 for it. At Shopto, it's £28.85 or for an extra quid, you get a Motion Plus, which I've not got yet, so I'm looking at it as a cheapish way of getting one and then maybe trying it out with a golf/tennis game.
