Just cancelled my pre-order for Yoshi's New Island. Reviews trickling out are negative (4 out of 10 in Edge, for example). Shame, as Yoshi's Island is a real favourite of mine, was looking forward to a sequel. Then again, the DS sequel from 2007 wasn't particularly good either. Oh well.

Hmm , after a near perfect year I've not seen much 3DS stuff thats been interesting for me so far in 2014 - Yoshi was on a list 'to check' , Bravely Default was not something that looked that interesting to me and we're still a while off Smash Bros / Kirby and Mario Golf

I know we'll probably get more info when E3 rolls around but until then for the year in 3DS we have :

7th Feb - Bravely Default : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bravely_Default
11th Feb - One Piece romance dawn : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Piece:_Romance_Dawn
13th Feb - Steel Diver Sub Wars
13th Feb - Inazuma Eleven : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inazuma_Eleven

14th March - Yoshi's new island : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshi%27s_New_Island
31st March - Shovel Knight : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shovel_Knight

11th April - Disney Magical World : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Magical_World
15th April - Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conception ... even_Stars
29th April - Amazing Spider Man 2 : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amazin ... eo_game%29

2nd May - Kirby: Triple Deluxe : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby:_Triple_Deluxe
2nd May - Mario Golf - World Tour : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Golf:_World_Tour

Then another Professor Layton / Smash Bros / and the new Sonic and thats it for the year.

I can only discuss my current purchases:

Street Pass games. The bundle available from the rabbit are ace. If you live in the middle of nowhere I probably wouldn't bother.

Super Mario 3D Land is just phenomenal. A must.

Fire Emblem is sublimely brilliant. Although I still miss the earlier sprite work.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is a tremendous 2D platformer.

VVVVVV (eShop) is the best way to play VVVVVV and is essential for those with taste (maybe watch a video first).

Animal Crossing is joyful and pointless.

Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate is a close to a portable Dark Souls as you can get. But does suffer some control issues if you don't have a 2nd control stick thingy.

The new Zelda is the best Zelda since Wind Waker.

I've currently lent mine to my wife, so I this is just of the top of my head.

Post subject:  Re: The Nintendo 3DS

Cheers, guys!

I already have Super Mario 3D Land (superb, as you say), I'm planning to get Luigi's Mansion 2, and I already have VVVVVV on Steam. Apart from that there isn't actually much that tickles my fancy. Possibly Zelda.

I am currently playing RE: Revelations, when I can find time for it. It's a bit simplistic compared to 4 and 5, but it's still enjoyable and has good atmosphere + dialogue so bad in places it's actually funny, almost like they did it as an in-joke. The main problem is that it's very dark, so you really need to play it in an environment that isn't too brightly lit or the reflections in the top screen become too distracting.

+1 for Luigi's mansion which is great (and a worthy follow up if you remember the GC original)

lasermink wrote:

Again works best if you have memories of Zelda : ALTTP

but even if you dont its really well done.

I bought it on steam in a recent sale and have done maybe the first 1/3 of it and as you said its a bit cheesy at times but it doesnt let things get too silly and the in joke stuff works (i mean you have a Jill Sandwich and "The master of unlocking" in RESI1)

Other 3DS stuff that you might like

Super Street Fighter IV
You should be able to pick this up fairly cheaply (about £5 or £6 in the UK) and its a really well put together version with big touch buttons on the bottom screen to pull of some of the more difficult big power moves

Castlevania Lords of Shadow
Not a classic but enjoyable (although you might find this is still quite expensive)

Donkey Kong Country Returns
A really well done update to the original games and gives you a good level of control over Kong - lots of nice little touches but it will be of more interest to you if you have fond memories of the original DK Country games

Zelda OOT & Starfox 3DS
Both remakes of the N64 originals - they are pretty accurate but are slight updates to 'old' games

Mario Kart 7
No snaking but otherwise a solid update to the kart series

New Super Mario Bros 2
I liked this - although i bought it - churned through the levels and sold it on - its a reasonable game but a little easy / short and doesnt give you much for replayability

There are 2 Professor Layton games - i've played the first (Miracle mask) which is just another in the series - nothing that special that stands out (however if you like the games you will probably like these)

This! The Sega remakes are definitely worth the asking price, if the specific games take your fancy. While I'm not particularly keen on Super Hang-On due to the slightly botched controls, some are particularly worth your time - Galaxy Force II and Shinobi 3, in my opinion.

BTW I'm agreeing with Zaph a few posts back about the release schedule being barren this year, certainly compared to the last year or so. I just hope that there's a few surprises in store to be announced at whenever the next Nintendo Direct pops ups.

I've got it!

It really does have the feel of a proper Gollop game.

It's a series of turn-based combat missions that make chapters in a story. There's no research or anything like in XCom, it's more like Rebelstar or Laser Squad.

Outrun 3DS - Japan only at the moment but it would be something i'd buy instantly if it was available here (even with the wrong badge/car details)

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/0 ... _for_japan

Quote:
3D OutRun Given a Release Date and Details for Japan

The 3D series of classics from Sega were, in the Nintendo Life office at least, among the highlights on the 3DS late last year. With a mix of arcade and Mega Drive / Genesis games getting the impressive remastering treatment from M2, it was pleasing that Sega had made the investment to localise that first run outside of Japan.

The second batch is already well underway in the company's homeland, however, and the latest confirmed title has made us borderline desperate for the second series of releases to be confirmed for the West. We previously reported that 3D OutRun had been announced, but now we have a release date and details on some of the title's enhancements. To start with the most important news, it arrives on the Japanese eShop on 23rd April for 762 yen (excluding tax).

Like previous '3D Classics' in this range, a number of neat enhancements have been made. These include:

The option to save at any point and resume later on
Circle Pad, D-pad or touch controls
A choice of the Japanese or 'Overseas' version, with different course placements between them
Multiple screen size settings, including a moving arcade cabinet style as seen in previous releases such as 3D Super Hang-On
A host of audio options, and two brand new songs composed by Manabu Namiki and Jane-Evelyn Nisperos

Plenty to look forward to. Short of making us all buy Japanese 3DS systems, we're left hoping for news of localisation from Sega. Would you be excited about playing this one?

I've got that 3D Classic Spacey arcade game (I forget the name, and the GF has still stolen my 3DS, so can't check) and it is superb. The 3D method works brilliant with the layer method the old games use. It kinda feels like an alternate timeline where we never got polygons but the tech improved this way. So on that basis this will be an incredible port.

Never liked the old outrun much, but I'll buy it to make the chance of Outrun 2 (or 3!) resurfacing someday. God I would kill for a non-PSP port.

Some 3ds news. Mimi now has tamdochi life which is kind of weird but fun. How i know? She was kin enough to send me here welcome editoon. Just made me and my daughter. Wub.

Finished 1 player tour of mario tennis. Too easy. Going to the net still almost always works. As it did with mario power tennis on the gba. Which i'm now redoscpvering pn the wiiu vortual console. Only on the last mario galaxy themed court this tactic doesn't work. But then you'll follow the power zones. In a way it becomes guitar hero at that point.

Got nsmb2 for cheap. Lots of commercials here now about the coins race. We'll see

Two new 3DS models. Double shoulder buttons, an extra thumbstick, main buttons coloured in the Super Famicom style, an inbuilt NFC connector, takes Micro SD cards rather than SD cards, has supposedly better and less blurry 3D, improved battery life and will have model-exclusive games including a port of Xenoblade Chronicles. Out October in Japan, but we'll be waiting until 2015 apparently.

I can't believe they would split the market like that. You can't even just get that controller thingy for the old 3DS, since this new one has a faster CPU as well for which non-backwards compatible games are already being made. I am not buying a new 3DS, they can fuck right off.
