I might buy one if there are some new Ouendan games.

Other than that, I'm not really too interested.

I'm interested to see how Julian Gollop's Ghost Recon game turns out, but I don't think I'll be getting one of these at launch now.. I'll give it a few months.

I have no real interest in getting one, but I would like a quick go to see how teh 3D effect works. I can imagine it's kinda weird, but it sounds awesome.

As for the console and games - no interest at all.

Unless I can actually perform 3d actions, ie "click" somewhere without making physical contact, I don't care about 3d. Even then I am not £220 interested.

By the fact that I only get my DS out annually to play Professor Layton, I'm guessing this won't be a Year 1 purchase for me.

Zelda ocarina of time with better camera controls people. What kind of gamer doesn't want a game that would have been the best game of all time if it were not for goldeneye with it's one flaw gone? :nerd:

Had a go on a demonstration 3DS in my stinky local branch of Gamestation today. Your local branch should have a demo unit behind the counter if you ask nicely.

The handheld's 3D effect... works. It's definitely more subtle than 3D cinema and 3D flatscreen TVs, which as we know require glasses. The 'looking into a box' analogy I've seen used is almost accurate, as the image doesn't 'leap out' at you (it's a depth effect only), but I'd liken the effect more to having a magic window which you can see through, cheesy as that description may sound.

The 'depth slider' to activate then adjust the 3D effect suffers from the problem I had with the DS Lite's volume control, being that it's just too small for the amount of precision you ideally need from it. You will need the slider set to the 'right' setting for your eyes, otherwise I've discovered the itchy eyestrain can set in fast. Get the screen calibrated right on the spot though, and you'll know instantly. It just clicks, you don't need to squint or anything. (I can imagine that if you share your 3DS with another player, it will be annoying to constantly recalibrate the screen to 'your' setting each time you pass the 3DS back and forth. I can also see many people being instantly off-put by the console if they try it with the screen not calibrated correctly.)

The GS said employee that only the Face Raider and picture-taking mode could be demonstrated to the public, but both showed the 3D display part of the hardware adequately. Face Raider, if you hadn't heard, is built-in; you take a 3D photo using the (disappointingly low-res) inbuilt cameras of peoples' faces, and the face images are used in what could be described as a first-person Missile Command, using the tilt sensor to rotate on the spot and move to fire at oncoming faces. (Makes more sense if you play it yourself.) As a hardware demo, it does it's job, but it's not a standalone game like Wii Sports.

Thumbstick's on 3DS just like the PSP nub to use, only more concave. Just as you'd expect from looking at hardware picture, basically, no surprises. Touch-screen's the same as the DS Lite/DSi one, so are the physical control buttons.

Conclusion? Personally I'd happily buy one, but more out of interest in the potential of future software support more than anything else, certainly the hardware didn't really have an enormous wow factor from my short experience with it. The 3DS seems an evolutionary step on from the DS rather than a quantum leap, from what I've seen of the console without playing a proper game on it, and it might underwhelm if you approach it with too high an expectation.

(Errr, that's it.)

It doesn't sound all that impressive, but I am still a little curious. I wonder what the first YAARRR-like devices will be like.

Ocarina and Goldeneye (also Perfect Dark) are easily up at the top end of a list of my faves. I think I've said it before but they were damn fine games that felt particularly exciting and came at a time in my life when I could really appreciate them (pissing around with mates instead of knuckling down to A-levels).

I'm hoping that not too many people are put off by the price of it, causing it to flop, as I want one, but can't justify the cost at the moment.

I assume not with GBA games.

Well it is backwards compatible with R4 carts

http://uk.kotaku.com/5771197/heres-the- ... -cartridge

Quote:
Not 24 hours since its release, here's the Nintendo 3DS running the notorious R4 flash cart. It's not that much of a surprise - probably doesn't even qualify as a hack, as a 3DS is fully backward compatible with DS cartridges, essentially what this is.

But this does let you know that, yes, for those who pirated ahem, "backed up regular DS cartridges they had legally and fully purchased," the device will work on a 3DS. 3DS games, which come on a cartridge that is 2 GB in size and shaped differently, remain, as far as we know, uncracked on day zero.

Nintendo has battled against the flash carts through the years, blaming sales drops on piracy associated with them and going to court to wipe out their business. They last tried to shut down the R4 and other flash cartridges with a firmware update back in December. R4 cracked that with an update of its own.

I've literally just got back from having a very brief go on a 3DS in my local Gamestation. The 3D effect genuinely seems to work really well - certainly far better than my experiences of watching 3D films in the cinema. Although as everyone keeps saying, the effect is one of depth, rather than having stuff fly out of the screen at you.

Got a 3DS.

Arrived today.

I know I was hesitant previously, but not only did I manage to get the console for £160 using a coupon, I've also got some freelance work out of it.

I had a five minute play on SSF IV the other day. The effect though subtle is pretty impressive.

Are there any reports on long-term playing with the 3D effect on?

Bowser sucks you inside the console and burns your face off. I think there's a video of it happening somewhere.

So this is out. A friend queue at midnight to get one and reports so far are 'really cool' and 'amazing'.

The advertising has been interesting, as I guess they cannot properly convey the effect of the 3D via 2D medium, so have gone with the rather 'you have to se it to believe it' type line, seeing only the back of the console but the amazement on the faces of the 'rea; people' using it. Unfortunately all the 'real people' in the advert look, to me, really annoying.

So, initial thoughts anyone?
I don't want one, i'm not a huge fan of the main Nintendo franchises, I have no idea what games are out or coming up.

So why the fuck am I thinking about popping out to Tesco and picking one up! :D

Nintendo's advertising across the board has been headache inducing ever since the Wii launched.

And that Wii startup sound now makes me cringe every time I hear it.

Fucking hell.

I just tried a 3DS for the first time over in the local GAME. I played it for about 5 minutes and the 3D effect worked really well but now my eyes feel like they've been lifting weights. This is horrible.

They showed me Nintendogs and then I insisted on some Street Fighter. I was able to pull of hadukens and whatever but the analog nubbin felt pretty much as awful as the PSP one and the dpad just hurt.

Also, Street Fighter had the same flat background and horrible jaggies as Tekken Tag Tournament. It looked like it was based on the ipod version as well.

My eyes still hurt. Fuck.

I got one in HMV as their trade-in prices were pretty good, and had a quick 15 mins on Street Fighter before heading back to work. I must confess, my eyes do feel a bit weird now. Hmmm.

The strangest thing I found from my 15 minute session on Street Fighter IV earlier was it then made my iPhone screen look 3D for a bit. Trying to type out a text made all the letters look like they were moving back and forth on the screen!

Reading through the game reviews, it seems every launch game is a solid "average" with only SF IV standing out, and i'm not a fan of SF these days. :(
Ghost Recon is the only game I think I would be interested in at the moment, and even then, only because it's the best of a bad bunch!

SSFIV is a lot more comfortable on the 360, looks better, is much cheaper currently and it won't give you 'come to bunkbed' eyes.

Okay, Ridge Racer 3D is fantastic! It's been getting far more play on my system then SSFIV. I've seen reviews where people have complained that the 3D effect is more subtle than other games, but actually I'd say it's more that you stop noticing so much after a while as you get sucked into the actual racing. Certainly the 3D effect seems pretty vivid at first whilst you're playing.

I'm wondering now what other tat I have at home that can be traded in. I wouldn't mind either Pilotwings or Ghost Recon next.

Some major retailers seem to be sticking 3DS software on the same shelves as the DS games – that's not going to help the 'casual' consumers who might be unaware that the 3DS is a new hardware format and not just another redesigned DS!
