The thing is, Windows phone got updated to Windows ten around the same time as it was released for the PC. It would appear that this was too little, too late though.

I've enjoyed my Windows Phone but I can't see me using it like I use my Zune.

Some of the UI paradigms they came up with for WP were generally innovative and pleasant to use. Others weren't

Yep. Having a settings menu that made iOS settings seem a logical and coherent arrangement wasn’t a great move.

Looks like I’m the straw that broke the camels back! Mere days after having an Android phone... Maybe I should have turned the lights off on the way out?

Nah it's been dead since it's inception. MS have just finally cottoned on.

Which is a real shame. They had some great ideas and were ahead of the curve with a lot of them it's just no one took any notice.

I've only ever known one real person who had a Windows phone. We used to joke that when our Microsoft TAM came to visit the userbase on the island had increased by 100%. He never got bored of that one.

I have one for work... it is ok.

No real apps for it, but then i only want to answer phone calls and text, and read emails.

Never had a Windows phone, but always had the impression that if you had a device that needed a phone app to run it such as a baby monitor then you always had IOS and Android apps but never a Windows app.

My Dad has a Samsung Surface clone on Windows 10 and spent 10 minutes looking for a Kindle app in the Windows store, couldn't find anything, there did used to be one!

I was having dinner with some people from our client team last week and one of them was showing me this

http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Offer ... p-elite-x3

Some sort of HP Windows 10 phone that you can integrate with laptops\PC's he was very excited as HP had given him one to try and telling me he was planning to look at deploying them at work.

Guess that project is over now :)

I think I saw a report that HP are looking into doing an Android version of that phone.

The whole point of that phone is the good bits of Windows 10 mobile. HP have committed to making it to 2019, though ms did give up on the os a week later.

I still quite want one but can't justify the spends :(

If anyone ever comes up with a single OS that runs on mobile and desktop devices and satisfies both audiences entirely then they'll have a license to print money, but unsurprisingly that's a really difficult problems to solve. At some point it'll happen because it's the Holy Grail for MS, Apple and Google (and anyone who fancies their chances of being the next thing) but on current evidence we're still a while away from that. Microsoft seem to have given up on the idea of Win10 being a 'run anywhere' proposition. Google are/have added Android support to ChromeOS, but the idea of having your device's functionality be dependant on your internet connection is still an understandable deal breaker for most. And Apple still have a hard line between their mobile and desktop OSs.

My suspicion is that Apple are the most likely to come out with a unifying OS first, but it'll be a difficult rebirth no matter who breaks first because it'll inevitably fuck shit up seriously for any existing customer.

Microsoft had it pretty much done, they just couldn't persuade Devs to actually create any universal apps. They make it pretty easy, to be honest.

I have a Dex dock coming for my Note. I had a quick play a while back and it seemed neat.

Even at the desktop level their universal apps have a deserved bad reputation for performance and features so I'm not convinced they'd actually nailed it. Just look at the Eurogamer/Digital Foundry articles about the Win10/Xbone shared exclusives. On Windows they've been a fucking disaster thus far; and while that can be fixed and made more attractive, the fact that it's been so awful from the start is telling I think.

Plugging a mouse and keyboard (or X360 pad) into any Android device is 'neat'. Not game changing though.

Dex is pretty impressive, but pricy as hell and not quite there yet. I believe I mentioned the mental way they've handled sound out over HDMI.

I think Google will pull it off best when they add Google Play/Android app support to desktop Chrome.

Microsoft have fucked it with their current implementation.

Its pretty much what the HP solution was trying to be? Dock your phone with screen\mouse etc and you have a PC environment?

That's probably a bit light description wise :)

It's a dock that lets you plug in a mouse and keyboard and gives you a video out. How's that "not remotely" the same?

It’s not remote: You plug it in. Geesh.

No I am just guessing what their trajectory looks like.

They also need to do a better job with Android on TVs, but then they could have Chromebooks, Windows/Mac laptops, mobiles, tablets and TVs all running the same apps.

I don't think Microsoft's current approach will really work, they don't have a solid enough foundation anywhere outside of desktop Windows.

Edit: Turns out there is a way of running Android apps in Chrome on Windows/MacOS right now, but it's not polished and it's more of a tool for devs than something for regular use, but it is using the Android emulator that is built into Chrome. I imagine it's on their to do list.

You get a real windowing UX on the screen, with a tabbed browser, MS Office apps, multitasking, etc. That's the important aspect -- a reasonable desktop experience.
