Oh wait, I think I do actually! Is it when your phone is on vibrate/silent? It appears across the top doesn't it?

This is going to be my last week with a Windows Phone and I’ll miss it.

My previous 3 phones have been a Lumia 950, Lumia 1020 and a Lumia 800. Each one has been bordering on greatness with niggles that should have been ironed out along the way.

Apps sometimes take a while to load, the camera on my 950 takes a few seconds to ‘add finishing touches’ to the picture and the lack of support for them from Microsoft has been a joke. But all in all, I’ve enjoyed having one. The live tiles and menu system is (in my opinion) better than any phone out there so I’ll miss that and the camera on the 1020 is still amazing! I occasionally charge it up and use the camera. Mainly to take pictures that end up on Twitter so the quality doesn’t matter but still..

Anyway, I’m getting a Nokia 8 on Saturday. It’s the closest thing to a Lumia that I can find but I’m looking forward to it. The world of Android awaits me and rest in peace Windows Phone. We barely knew ye.

It came out as WP7 first around the same time as Win 7, so not sure I agree with this. The main issue was it was so late - iOS and Android had massive app stores by then. They were always playing catch up.

Not the launch, particularly, but certainly as time moved on. Windows 8 was such a disaster that WP would have to be perfect to break the association. As it was, the best thing you could say about it was... it's no worse than Android.

Post subject:  Re: Windows Phone 7

The thing is, Windows phone got updated to Windows ten around the same time as it was released for the PC. It would appear that this was too little, too late though.

I've enjoyed my Windows Phone but I can't see me using it like I use my Zune.

Some of the UI paradigms they came up with for WP were generally innovative and pleasant to use. Others weren't

Yep. Having a settings menu that made iOS settings seem a logical and coherent arrangement wasn’t a great move.

Post subject:  Re: Windows Phone 7

Never had a Windows phone, but always had the impression that if you had a device that needed a phone app to run it such as a baby monitor then you always had IOS and Android apps but never a Windows app.

My Dad has a Samsung Surface clone on Windows 10 and spent 10 minutes looking for a Kindle app in the Windows store, couldn't find anything, there did used to be one!

I was having dinner with some people from our client team last week and one of them was showing me this

http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Offer ... p-elite-x3

Some sort of HP Windows 10 phone that you can integrate with laptops\PC's he was very excited as HP had given him one to try and telling me he was planning to look at deploying them at work.

Guess that project is over now :)

The whole point of that phone is the good bits of Windows 10 mobile. HP have committed to making it to 2019, though ms did give up on the os a week later.

I still quite want one but can't justify the spends :(

If anyone ever comes up with a single OS that runs on mobile and desktop devices and satisfies both audiences entirely then they'll have a license to print money, but unsurprisingly that's a really difficult problems to solve. At some point it'll happen because it's the Holy Grail for MS, Apple and Google (and anyone who fancies their chances of being the next thing) but on current evidence we're still a while away from that. Microsoft seem to have given up on the idea of Win10 being a 'run anywhere' proposition. Google are/have added Android support to ChromeOS, but the idea of having your device's functionality be dependant on your internet connection is still an understandable deal breaker for most. And Apple still have a hard line between their mobile and desktop OSs.

My suspicion is that Apple are the most likely to come out with a unifying OS first, but it'll be a difficult rebirth no matter who breaks first because it'll inevitably fuck shit up seriously for any existing customer.

Microsoft had it pretty much done, they just couldn't persuade Devs to actually create any universal apps. They make it pretty easy, to be honest.

Even at the desktop level their universal apps have a deserved bad reputation for performance and features so I'm not convinced they'd actually nailed it. Just look at the Eurogamer/Digital Foundry articles about the Win10/Xbone shared exclusives. On Windows they've been a fucking disaster thus far; and while that can be fixed and made more attractive, the fact that it's been so awful from the start is telling I think.
