Yeah, I meant 'on the move' rather than 'using a telecommunications device'. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Nice in-depth preview of Mango up at Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/27/wind ... iew-video/

There's some really interesting stuff in there. I think they're really going out on a limb with designing a UI that is all about managing how you communicate with people. Could be great, or could be meh.

I read a bit about that - what makes it different from Gmail's implementation?

Wait, what? I don't think we're talking about the same thing.

Note how the conversation migrates from SMS to Facebook or IM, it maintains a constant thread. More details.

(Note that this isn't new, WebOS did it too. And I'd like to see it support email and Twitter DMs, and probably more IM networks.)

Surely that's a right pain in the proverbials when trying to make sense of conversations when you read them on their native services?

I have to say, having one contact on my phone that is a person's phone, facebook, and twitter accounts all tied together, and letting you use any of those services to contact that person, is pretty fantastic. Seems very strange that they don't provide MSN messenger integration as well. G+ would also have been nice, but I guess they were too far into the mango development cycle when G+ came along.

It's a shame it's only Facebook chat though, and not messages. No one I text a lot seems to use Facebook chat at all.

It is a great feature, though. I'm pretty sure Live Messenger works if you sign into your Live account...

I saw it somewhere, but now I can't find it. :(

Yep, Mango now allows full integration with Twitter as well as Facebook. So I've got a stream of everything that's happening on both services, including being able to 'Like' and add comments in FB and @reply in Twitter, all from the same screen.

It's automatically linked a lot of accounts together in my People tile as well, so you can now tap on a person and communicate with them in any way you like, again all from the same screen.

I think that's done based on whether they use the exact same name in both services, or the same email address for both services. For those that don't, you have to manually link them. Not a terribly arduous process, mind.

Yeah. I had to spend about 20 mins linking all the others together, but it didn't take long.

@Kuo isn't Facebook chat just an online version of messages? I sent a group message out the other day but if I'm online and someone replies to it, it comes up as a chat window. Then when they're offline and I next open that message, the chat is saved as history.

You could post to someone's facebook wall directly from their contact on your phone? Huh. Why's no-one else done that between then and now then?

I've tried sending messages to people who are offline and it doesn't work, so it must only be chat.

Excuse the terrible picture. Mango still can't take screenshots, for some completely unknown reason.

I think that's just Grim...'s stock answer to anyone saying anything about mobile phones.

The amount of times he's said it, his phone 4 years ago had roughly the same specs as the iPhone 12.

When it's true, of course.
And yeah, although I can't remember if it was the 'standard' contacts list or a third-party one.

I've recently had a play with a Nokia Lumia 800 and am seriously considering getting it as my next phone. I'm currently using an HTC Desire but am a little bit bored of Android.

I like new and shiny things but don't want an iPhone.

I've just had a look on the app marketplace for WP7 and it seems a bit... well... light I guess. No proper Dropbox app, no Liveprofile and it doesn't look like there's a proper YouTube app... or Google+ now I think about it. Is the marketplace still up and coming or has it stalled slightly?

YouTube works fine. There seems to be plenty of Dropbox apps, but no idea how good they are.

I currently use Live Profile on my android which is an instant messaging app.. It's the main thing I use on my phone and as I understand it, it's not available for Windows phone.

Is there an instant messaging app for Windows phone that works across Android and windows?

How does Live Profile work? Is it a client for Live Messenger or Google Talk, etc?

Without getting too technical (because I don't know really..) its a stand alone application and as far as I can tell, it uses its own servers.. I think.

Just read up on it and you're right, you can't get it on WP. Not sure how you'd get round that one. How many people do you communicate using it? If one or two, would it be possible to convince them to move to a Windows supported service? I appreciate that's not practical if a lot of people use it.

I've never heard of it before though, I have to admit.

There's a few of us that use it but I'm sure they could be convinced to change as Live Profile is hit and miss at the best of times.

I have another question.. So erm, Myp.. Over to you!

Can you use your own ringtones on a Windows phone? Is it easy to get them on there?

You have to use Zune don't you? Am I right in thinking there's no drag and drop function?

It's a bit fiddly, but you can do it:

http://www.neowin.net/news/wp7-mango-cu ... s-detailed

Quote:
With Mango, selecting a custom ringtone is easy. As long as the sound file you wish to select meets the following criteria, it can be set as a custom ringtone:

39 seconds or shorter
smaller than 1 megabyte (MB)
saved in MP3 or WMA format
not copy-protected (i.e. DRM free)
Alice details the process of adding a ringtone, saying that they can be added through Zune by adding a sound or music file, then changing the "Genre" field on the song to "Ringtone" and synchronizing it like any other music track. Because it has the "ringtone" genre set, it won't show up in your phones music library, but will automatically be shown under the new "custom ringtones" category in the ringtone selector.
