Fair enough. I think I'll eat my dinner later on with a Torx screwdriver set, then when I inevitably go back to a knife and fork, I'll appreciate them even more.

US release was fairly muted, apparently. Some analyst was estimating 40,000 units sold in the first weekend, although there wasn't any compelling context around that to suggest if that's good or bad.

That's pretty cheap for an up-to-the-minute smartphone with no contract. It's a lot less than I paid for my iPhone.

Yeah but you'd sell your face for the latest gadget.

Plus he already has an iPhone doesn't he?

Even with a contract, I paid £299 up-front for my iPhone 4. Though I wouldn't have done that if I hadn't been able to offload my 3GS to some prime sucka Kalmar to offset the cost considerably.

The fuck?! I got mine for £50 (on a £35 contract) a month or so after the initial release excitement died down. I was so pleased I gave my 3G away.

Meh. Within a couple of days, I'd recouped all but £80 of that £299 (selling my 3GS), and had downgraded to a cheaper contract, saving £60 over the course of a year. It barely cost me anything, ignoring the potential savings of keeping my 3GS and downgrading my contract even further, before Gaywood points it out.

16 or 32Gb? And 18 or 24 month contract? On the £35/mnth O2 are currently quoting £139.00 for 16Gb/24 month, rising to £299.00 for 32Gb/18 month. Did they cut you a deal then?

Mine was an 18-month contract for the 32GB model. I can cut down my contract after 18 months for half a year before the next (next next) iPhone is presumably out, saving even more money.

16GB on 18 month. Yeah they cut me a deal. I've been with O2 since I turned 18 and immediately signed a contract! Well, BT Cellnet I think it was at the time. So yeah, if I stomp my heels they tend to cut me some slack. The first thing I did was make sure I could get the £40/month 18 month contract for £35, then I whinged about the handset price and they said "we can't give you it for free, blah blah, how about £50?". Woo!

With the 3G I would quite often over spend by a fiver a month (usually because of going over 500 texts or MMSes, or phoning 0800 numbers such as my bank  ), so that probably helps. On this new tariff though, I'm yet to even approach my limits with the 4.

That's hardly an ‘I paid £50. Why didn't you pay £50?’ scenario!

Not while it's in a bin in Leeds.

But when your swanning around Starbucks with your gash-achino you be pulling it out of your overstretched skinny jeans, and playing it up like no fuckers business.

I'm not paying £240 and locking myself in for two years when I can pay a bit more and then have the opportunity to upgrade to an iPhone 5 next year.

I paid Apple £500 for an iPhone 4, and O2 £15 a month on a 12 month contract, and (in the UK) have not paid another penny in monthly costs. I've still not seen anything anything come close in terms of 12 month running cost. Plus I should have a resale value of about £250 to drop on a new phone come June.

No, you simply pay £380 for a brick to send to Leeds.

I wonder if it'll ever be seen again.

I didn't mean the apple version specifically. I meant anything that offers similar functionality. As far as I am aware, WP7 doesn't have anything at all.
