Amazon paying cut rate taxes in Luxembourg didn't help them sell many Fire Phones.

I'll grant you that Amazon are also a scummy company but one that is less good at selling phones.

How is it possible that you don't understand how accounting periods work?

Fiscal 1Q15 starting at Calendar 4Q14 I can totally understand, but the week before?

52/53 week 'years' are not uncommon. Allows you to always have a year-end close on a friday, for example, which is very useful for businesses with significant amounts of stock that needs to be counted/audited at a fixed point in time.

I don't really see the point. From the accessories and size, they're obviously trying to compete with the Surface Pro, but I think they'd have been better with it running a version of OSX rather than iOS.

Post subject:  Re: iPad

It'll sell millions, and millions more than the Surface Pro, but iPad Pro fails as a genuine surface competitor on a fundamental - No built in kickstand and a flat keyboard. In fact the utilisation of the smart keyboard to provide a (non variable angle kickstand) is what forces the keyboard to be a flat keyboard. They've gone for form factor over utility on that front. Given that one of the main improvements from SP1 to SP3 has been cited as that feature/features, it's surprising that they have done the same thing.

Also, and this is more trivial - the pencil has nowhere to go and as far as I can see no attempt at a solution to this. On the Surface there are three options - two official (magnetic - not strong, and the penloop which I've never tried) but there is also the penclip over the top which can hook onto the typecover fold easily and actually keeps it very secure, which MS don't 'promote'.

Does the stylus come with the iPad? I read the stylus will cost $99 but it didn't say whether you'll have to buy it separately, mind you, I was looking for iPhone 6S stuff so I only skim read the article.

I'm pretty sure you need to buy it separately if you want it.

For me the fundamental flaw in the new iPad is that it runs iOS. If you're going to go with that size/cost then a device that doesn't run a proper desktop OS just doesn't stack up well against the Surface. Yes, iOS has versions of a lot of software like Office etc but it doesn't have and do everything so why compromise? iOS, like Android, is still an OS for consumption and if you need to create it just doesn't measure up. I dunno, I'm sure I'm missing a trick here but it just seems to push iOS into a space it's not suitable for which is a weird decision. If there's a desire for capable Apple devices in that form factor then they need to design OSX for touch and slap that on something, but this isn't that.

Yeah, I would probably agree with that. But then they'd probably be eating too much into MacBook Air sales so...

True, but why not combine the lines? And a device of sufficient size could contain ipad and MacBook components, judging by the size of the 2015 Macbook's motherboard.

I think that's the plan. OS X has become more and more iOSified over the last few years. I suspect they'll merge at some point.

I've just done a stocktake, and I've got the Surface Pro, iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8, 2 x Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.2, and a Kindle Fire. Only the Surface Pro is ever used - I actually don't know where the others are (except the iPad - that's on the coffee table, but hasn't been charged up in a year or so).

There's also a Hudl (although that belongs to the Grimlet, and he uses it a lot).

Note that I only paid for the iPad, Hudl, Tab 8 and the Fire - the rest I acquired from work.

Our head office is in Belgium and they are always months behind UK release dates for new Apple stuff

So I get contacted and asked to buy and ship them 3 or 4 of everything so they can "evaluate them" always get an upgrade for my trouble.

Its always on their cost codes as well!

I can see a clear business case for better reading of comics on the Ipad Pro:)

I have 2 IPad Air2, primary devices for my wife and I. Work issue.

Then 3 IPad 3 which are just used for baby monitoring and one sits in the kitchen and is used for recipes. These were all bought from our US office after they upgraded the sales force. The US always buy the best of everything so these are 64GB Wi-Fi\3G, cost me $100 each.

Also have a Surface 2 which is no use, I managed to get a Windows 10 preview on it and I'll be dammed if I can wipe the HD or get any sort of OS on it now.

I have a box of 30 odd IPad 3 32GB that are doing nothing as we just upgraded everyone, door wedges spring to mind.

Fair enough, my only experience is the odd time I pick up one of the older iPads we've got here in the office and I'm always surprised with how heavy they are and I wouldn't fancy supporting one for any length of time.

The only thing I could think of that could conceivably do that is if you've got QoS set on your router giving maximum priority to your iPad. Pretty sure you'd remember setting that though.
