I sure have. I'm yet to see what the forum is like through the browser, so I'll try that later. I like apps.

Photo Transfer App is excellent for sending photos and videos across from your iPhone to iPad (or vice versa between any iOS devices or your PC/Mac), particularly now iMovie is available on the iPad despite its shite cameras. It's depressing that it's necessary, of course, but there's no real better way to do it wirelessly, and the camera connection kit can GTFF.

My Smart Cover has finally arrived. Fuck knows how something sent from the UK early Monday morning can arrive at my door a whole two days after something sent from China on the same day.

Anyway, it's lovely. It clips on absolutely effortlessly precisely.

For the 3g owners among you, you may be interested in this.

12 months 3g data micro sim, for £15. 500mb a month FUP on video streaming though.

Does there exist a dongle/app combo that will allow a user to plug a usb storage device straight into an ipad for file transfer? I'm pretty sure there's not and have told my boss as much, but I thought I'd check with you turtlenecks before I rubber stamped it.

Yes, there is: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC531ZM/A works for photos, for example, and some small number of video formats. There are other similar devices that hook to specific iPad apps, I believe. http://www.pcworld.com/article/228316/s ... anion.html is also relevant.

Yes, definitely.
You won't get it 100% dust free (usually at the edges) but for the couple of quid they cost for a pack of three it's well worth doing

Don't iPads have the super tough glass screen like the iPod touches have?

No screen protector with mine. But it does spend most of it's time in it's official iPad1 case (which is lovely).

What?! The official iPad1 case is a vile hideous creation with a disgusting velvet outer that seems purpose built to pick up fluff and grime.

Well it means I can carry my iPad around without a care at work. And prop it up to act as a keyboard. Yeah it's sexier naked (Fnar!) but it's very practical.

Another one here who doesn't bother with a screen protector on his iPad - it'll be fine without it. Ironically, I got sick of the official case a few months back, took it out and noticed the back is all dented to fuck. No idea how that happened. The screen is still mint though!

I can't help but get an ominous feeling that this means we have passed the point of no return, that is to say that people are now so entirely dependent on technology that if it should all stop working some day for whatever reason, there is nothing anyone can do but to lie down and die*.

Most of us passed that point the moment we forgot how to subsistence farm, which is about a century or so ago now.

I don't know what they're like now but I've had to mess around with numerous tablet PCs at work, wretched, awful things. I was glad when people realised that in a busy environment frequented by the general public that all IT equipment needs to be securely fastened to something large and heavy.

I keep flinching at the budget ones that show up on HUKD every so often for about £130-150. Although they're a bit rubbish out the box, there's a few that can have Honeycomb put on them which seems to turn the user experience into something a bit more pleasant. Hopefully with some new ones coming out and ICS, there'll be a few more decent ones kicked into budget range.

I've had a play with the Xoom that we have for testing at work and it's lovely. For some reason the (ipad bumming) boss hates it and has labelled it 'useless'. In the same breath he also whinged about not being able to get a photo onto his ipad. Odd.

You can get a camera kit for about a fiver that will let you upload piccies from an SD card onto your iPad, does RAW files too. It's one of the reasons I wanted one.

If I was going to spend that much on one, I'd probably consider an iPad, just so I had something for iOS-exclusive apps/games.

I weighed it up and in all honesty I'm not at the stage where I feel in any way limited by the 18-55 and 55-200 I already have. I think the aspects of photography I need to work on wouldn't be much improved by getting more lenses.

The only problem with the budget tablets is the quality of screen, touch sensitivity, materials etc... Sure Honeycomb may be equivalent to iOS as an OS, but the hardware on the cheapy models will suck by comparison.

Well, there appears to be budget, and there's budget. Some are terrible, some aren't that bad. Of course the hardware sucks compared to an iPad, it's a third of the price, and it does the job.

It also depends entirely what you want the device for. A lot of people assume Android's fine because, hey, they just want to watch a bit of video and prat about online. And that's fair enough. But then on iPad, you'll at least every month hear about something fantastic like Animoog, which just doesn't exist on other platforms. So iPad owners—to some extent—end up more often using their device for things they'd never thought about before. (On Animoog: if you don't follow me on Twitter, I've been banging on about it for a week. It's a LOVELY Moog synth, and it's currently 69p. If you've any interest in synths whatsoever and have an iPad, download it. If you're planning on getting an iPad, download it.)

Personally, I'm also not a massive fan of Google's general approach to tablets, with its senior execs saying there's no real need for tablet-specific apps, and apps should instead be more like responsive web design. I guess that's primarily down to the huge range of form factors, but the more defined iOS tablet apps tend to be superior from a UI and UX standpoint. (Not always, but more often than not.) There's also something of a dump-and-run mentality in the Android space, which is a pity. So many companies are making kit that's not very profitable, and since they don't own the ecosystems, they've little interest in the long-term. By comparison, the original iPad's still very much supported and, in my experience, FFP for the vast majority of new apps.

One exec said this, once, in the face of a woeful dearth of Android tablet apps. I suspect it's spin, not strategy. Remember when Jobs said "no-one needs video on an iPod" less than a year before launching the first video-supporting iPod?

I have discovered an astonishing fact. Here in America, in both NY State and Pennsylvania, nobody outside of the cities has ipads, iphones or even video phones. The network isn't set up to handle it and the local stores don't carry them. In fact my uncle tells me that most people haven't even really heard of them, and that most American hi-tech stuff simply gets exported and isn't bought domestically most places. This accords with what I've seen... I've not seen a single ipad or iphone, and in my week and a half here drinking in coffee joints I've only seen two laptops total.

I wear my surprised face.

I got this Animoog thing and it's bloody brilliant, if a little confusing for someone not acquainted with synths or really anything much about music save for listening to it. I thought I'd have a look at the manual to clear a few things up:

LFO (low frequency oscillator) is a modulation source. RATE controls the LFO
frequency. When SYNC is on, the RATE is a multiple or division of the BPM, ranging
from 8 Wn (whole notes) to 1/64 Wn. SHAPE is a continuously variable blend from
Sine, to Ramp, to Sawtooth, to Square, to Sample and Hold. All of the waveshapes
are bipolar (symmetrical over the zero crossing) except for Square wave, which is
unipolar. KB TRIG re-triggers the start phase of the LFO waveform with each new
voice triggered.
MOD 1-4 Select from the 4 tabs to edit the modulation slots, each with programmable
SOURCE, CONTROL, and DESTINATION.
SOURCE selects the modulation source. Touch the arrow to open the pull-down
menu and select OFF, LFO, MOD, X-POSITION or Y-POSITION as a source. If OFF is
selected, then CONTROL becomes the modulation source. AMOUNT is Bipolar and
can be used to scale or invert the selected source's modulation amount. Double
tapping the AMOUNT knob zeroes out the modulation amount.

:DD WTFF?
