So this is what Crucial said... So, if I buy 2x 2gb of RAM then that'll make me have 8gb of RAM won't it? Which would be better for doing computery things?

Why does Crucial suggest I get 2x 1gb of RAM?

Isn't it just listing that by the smallest capacity first?

Is there not a 2 x 2GB kit a bit further down?

Your max is 4GB, it says on the left.

It says in the pic that his board can only handle 1gb sticks per bank. It's quite unusual to find DDR2 boards that could support 2gb sticks it came on much later boards. I had terrible trouble getting 4x2gb sticks working in my AMD board (I have a Phenom 2 X6 rig). I had to install them one at a time, boot, shut down then install another.

Unfortunately dude that doesn't really leave you anywhere to go. I think it's time to consider getting something newer :)

Hearthly.

Unfortunately it seems Nvidia have rules on their reviews and so none of them have included Vulkan or anything that shows the 480 in a better light. Sure, the 1060 is almost as fast as a 980 now in the games we have but unfortunately it pales into significance in Vulkan, where an independent test was ran.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2016/07/ ... 46fk7grIuV

At 1440p using the same playable settings found on the GeForce GTX 1060 we find the AMD Radeon RX 480 simply blows the GeForce GTX 1060 out of the water in terms of performance. While both are allowing a very high post 60FPS performance, AMD Radeon RX 480 takes it to a new level and even beats out the GeForce GTX 980! The Radeon RX 480 is performing 25% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060 under the Vulkan API, just wow.

And.

The performance gap widens at 1080p. Here the AMD Radeon RX 480 is 32% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060 running "Ultra" settings and "Nightmare" settings at 1080p under the Vulkan API. Performance has increased with the more CPU bound resolution, perhaps showing one advantage of Vulkan API (and coincidently DX12 as well) the fact that CPU overhead can be reduced at lower resolutions improving performance.

So I personally would pick carefully unless you don't mind replacing it within a year or so? the 480 is a much safer option going into the future IMO. It will be faster than a 980.

It's got 4GB in two slots right now.

I just Googled it hoping it would bring it up on MSI's site where I could check for memory compatibility. Unfortunately it seems that that board is not a standard MSI board and was usually put in computers like Medion and so on.

https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=182740.0

MSI don't offer any support and I don't even think Medion exist any more. That coupled with the fact that the memory would cost a lot would steer me away from bothering.

The key point with the 480 versus the 1060 is that I am absolutely constrained by the card being half-length if it's to go in Hearthly Jnr's PC, I don't think power will be an issue, but AFAIK there are no half-length 480s?

Noise is also a consideration as well, her current PC is effectively silent, so I wouldn't like to stick a fan-happy Radeon card in there.

As for the RAM thing, Vision is already saying he has 4GB of RAM in his PC via two sticks, so I'd be very surprised if he couldn't stick another 2 x 2GB sticks in there.

I would wait to see what the 470 brings in terms of size dude. It should allow smaller cards and still perform better under Async DX12 and Vulkan.

As for the ram thing? you need to remember that when that PC was designed and made we were all still running 32bit OSes so it's likely that it may not support a full 8gb regardless of what's in there now. Apparently they were often shipped as 3gb. 2x1gb and 2x512mb sticks. Companies like Medion never update their bioses ever. They sell you the PC as they sold it to you and that's pretty much that.

But Grims... link says I can get another 4gb of RAM for £40? This seems ok to me I reckon... Thanks Grim. I might just go for that after my holiday next week.

And yeah, Medion do still exist and yes, it looks like they do PCs still...

Look at the board in this link.

https://www.mrmemory.co.uk/memory-ram-u ... rd/ms-7502

Then look at this one.

http://microdream.co.uk/media/catalog/p ... 4333_2.jpg

They are different. Not in shape or design but the red one would have been the one MSI sold and it would have a completely different bios on it to the one your Medion (if it's a Medion) has on it.

Crucial are not usually wrong, but if you are in any doubt I would pop the side off the PC and take a look at it.

If it herlps, memory is the absolute easiest thing to fit in my opinion, so don't worry about popping the side off and taking your existing memory out. Just undo the clips.

One thing that popped into my head about this is that doubling the RAM, even if it's feasible, might not yield the results that Vision is hoping for.

I guess the first thing to check, before dropping any cash, is whether or not the PC is maxing out on its RAM and hitting the page file whilst doing the tasks Vision reports it's currently struggling with.

If anyone's looking to upgrade their graphics card for cheaps, I have a AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB card for sale for £60, which I think is still a good price?

Not exactly VR capable or anything, but it served me well until I got the Rift and dealt with most things well enough.

Is it one with a really swizzy cooler on it or something? The basic reference design blower 970s are down to £191 now, and even ones with nice coolers on them are only £200.

It's this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... _i=desktop

Amazon are selling for £200 new or £180 used on the marketplace.

It's absolutely fine for most use cases of the Rift. Just that iRacing isn't particularly well optimised for it (they're a small team) and that's what I use it for mostly. With the 1070 I can whack all the settings up again and get a steady 90fps again.

The 970 was fine with Dirt Rally and Elite Dangerous, as a reference.

WoW patch landed yesterday with all the new graphics options. In simple terms what was an ULTRA on the old settings, is now a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. (This is a pre-expansion patch, the new expansion launches next month.)

I was a bit concerned about how the 750Ti in Jnr's PC would handle this at her monitor's native res of 1920x1200, but it worked out fine.

She can have the draw distance out to 10, which is arguably the most important single new setting as it makes the world feel bigger, with far more scenery in view before it fogs out. For everything else she's between 7 and 10, so overall she's getting a better looking experience than previously, and FPS sits nicely between 50 and 60.

For Mrs H it was just 10s right across the board, but she has a GTX960 and a slightly lower res monitor (1920x1080), which seems to match the 960 perfectly. Again, framerate holds nicely at 50 to 60.

My account is inactive at the moment but I'll be renewing it shortly, I don't expect my 970 to struggle at 2560x1440 though.

Kovacs gets first dibs on the graphics card - what PSU do you have in your PC though, Mark? It needs quite a hefty one IIRC.

If Dav wants it let him have it.. i am not in a rush

Sure thang. If you want it before next week, you'll have to pop around to ours tonight to pick it up, although I'm not there (work night out) - Jem will have to go upstairs and bring it down. It's been sat on my desk for a while so probably needs the dust blowing out of it, but other than that should be fine :)

If you do pop around tonight, just drop Jem a line on FB or what have you to let her know first please dude :)

I know you like numbers divisible by 100 and 4 so let's make it £400

100 is divisible by four. Just saying.

Yeah but that gives you an odd number and no one wants that.

I'll give you £200 / 4 then.

£4 / 200 and we'll round it down to make it simpler.

Nvidia announce Pascal Titan X, for $1200.

http://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/ ... -announced

Few things to note. It seems to be missing 256 shaders from the full spec, so they could be going for a double Titan release with this one (just to be greedy, like) like they did with the Titan/Titan Black. It costs $1200 and has pretty lame clock speeds, presumably down to the cooler which had trouble with the 1080. It's also missing HBM2, which was supposedly going to be on it. So IMO they will con the suckers again, then wait six months and release the real? Titan P.

Either way it's just more of the sublime from Nvidia. Oh yeah, you can only buy it from them too.
