Have you gone through the minidump stuff suggested earlier in the thread Pete?

Are there any clues in the event log?

Quite bad luck you've had here really, this sort of carry on is fairly rare these days :(

You could just RMA the PC at this point and let Overclockers sort it out.

So I bought 16gb of super whizzy memory this weekend, wiped my gaming pc and rebuilt it, so all the crap has gone and all sleek and lovely. Ready to play some kick ass games...

... spent most of yesterday playing Hearthstone on it

WoW and Hearthstone are the primary reasons I've not upgraded my PC in yonks, although GTA5 may tip me over into new computer territory, depending on how it runs on my existing setup.

I don't need much encouragement to spunk cash on shiny new PC stuff, but when WoW and Hearthstone are accounting for 95%+ of my gaming, even I baulk at dropping £250 on a new graphics card or a few hundred quid on a new mobo/CPU/RAM, or maybe a grand or more on a whole new PC.

Mrs Hearthly's new PC has been a bit of an eye-opener as well, it's very much what you'd call 'midrange', and yet it absolutely kicks the shit out of everything I've chucked at it at 1080p with all the pretties turned on whilst comfortably maintaining 60FPS (and remaining whisper quiet at all times).

The thing is though, XBox One and PS4 just haven't moved things on in terms of the power on tap, being comfortably outgunned by even a modest gaming PC. Their CPUs in particular are turning out to be very weak (with those 8 horrible AMD cores), and as they're effectively PCs stuffed into little boxes, it stands to reason that you're not going to need much of a mega-PC to run whatever game you want to at very nice settings.

GTA5 will be one to watch though, I'm awaiting that one with keen interest.

One sentence in a single post, and must be the first time I've posted anything on the subject in months, plus it was contextual, and in a thread called 'PC gaming hardware thread'.

Your definition of 'beating the drum' is a fairly unusual one.

I've bitten the bullet and ordered a GTX960, which seems to be the right card for my 1080P projector. It's twice the speed of my HD6970 according to the stats, so it should make a noticeable difference and mean I don't need to faff around with video settings as I currently do to get stuff smooth :)

It's a pretty remarkable card TBH, which variant did you go for?

By all accounts it delivers the same performance as a GTX680, which was Nvidia's proper high end single GPU card two generations ago. (That seems about right to me, as it outperforms my GTX670 by a consistent 10-15%.)

The other amazing thing about the 960 is the noise, or rather, the almost total lack of it.

This one. It was £175. Couldn't justify the extra £100 for the 970, especially as i'm going to be using it on a 1080P display.

Nice enough :) Quality cooler on those too, should be super-quiet even under high load.

The 970 is definitely overkill for 1080p IMO, having seen the 960 kick all sorts of ass in Mrs Hearthly's PC.

3.40 GHz
8.00GB of RAM
64-Bit operating system
x64-based processor

Can I play GTAV on MAXED OUT ULTRA settings?
Can I play Battlefield 4 on ULTRA MAX settings?
Can I play Battlefield Hard-on Edition on ULTRA ULTRA MAXIMUM settings?
Will Far Cry 4 look better on my PS4 or my PC?
What about Crysis 1 to 3?
If I can't go ULTRA MAXED OUT then what am I going to get with these big hitter games (if anything)?
And should I even bother or will everything grind to a halt?
Is it white and gold or black and white?

Found some info on this one

"This is usually heat related, defective hardware, memory or even processor though it is
"possible" that it is driver related (rare). Remove ALL power and reseat all cards, memory
and cables (on both ends) - actually remove and replace - do not just snug. Make sure
the system has adequate ventilation - add a small fan blowing into intakes"

Not sure if this is a laptop or PC? If a laptop check there is no dust build up on all the vents, you can blow the crap away with compressed air that you could get at PC World (or cheaper online)

If its a PC check everything is seated ok and that the fans all run when the PC is turned on.

Also check that air can get in and out of the system (its not tight against a wall etc on the fan side)

Wrong.

You care about PC vs console comparisons? Why?

This is what every single Digital Foundry article to date should have concluded:

"A £550 gaming PC has greater image fidelity than a £275 games console. You can't build a gaming PC for £275. In any event, approximately zero people make the decision between gaming PC and console based on raw performance, because many other factors such as perceived ease-of-use and what platform your friends favour dominate."

If there were any new news that move beyond this conclusion I could see the point in discussing it. But there isn't, and there isn't likely to be either.

Because I have both, and I think the "jump" between the current-gen consoles and the last gen is far less than the previous one, and because PCs are (slowly) starting to claw their way into the living room.

Unfortunately every time anyone dares talk about it people like Kov start jumping up and down, like we were sat around his dining table slagging off his mum.

While this is mostly true I doubt it's entirely and always the case. My current setup has my PS4 and PC hooked up to the TV and surround sound in the living room so if there was a game I was interested in that was available on both platforms and would look better on my PC then I'd absolutely buy it for that. Admittedly this is less of a thing for me right now because the spec of my PC is well behind the curve but at some point I'll upgrade it and then I'll really be interested in what is the best way to play a particular game.

No, I don't think it's when "anyone" mentions it. It's just when people who have been unspeakably tedious about the whole thing in the past start up then there's a tendency to think "oh for fucks sake, he's off again"

I think you are wrong. I think the baseline resolution going from sub-720p to almost universally 1080p is a big "jump."

Are they? Where? I saw a lot of noise about Steamboxes eighteen months ago, but they're still nowhere to be found. When (...if?) they do arrive, I have serious concerns about the viability of SteamOS, and also the suitability of Windows for the living room. Meanwhile a few manufacturers are shipping some SFF gaming PCs, but then again, there always were a few of those around. And the actually console-sized ones often sacrifice the modularity and upgradability of normal PCs, because fitting normal GPUs and air cooling in tiny cases is hard.

You also haven't addressed my actual point, which is: this stuff isn't changing. There's nothing new to discuss. Any conversation about it is inherently a retread of old ground.

Relevant to our discussion the other day:

Steam Controller, SteamVR, Steam Machines: Valve’s hardware push in photos | Ars Technica

Quote:
In the case of Steam Machines, well, they're coming, and they're certainly more expensive than current-gen consoles. The 14 models that debuted at GDC start at no less than $460—the cheapest being an Athlon X4-powered rig by iBuyPower with a 1GB Radeon R7 video card inside—so Valve certainly isn't positioning any of its suppliers' machines to be affordable, mass-market living room devices.

Link also has some hands-on commentary on the Steam Controller. Having read a half-dozen of those, opinions are very mixed. Even the most positive say it'll take a lot of adjusting to compared to either a traditional pad or mouse and keyboard.

Also, I read somewhere that Steam Machines will have to run SteamOS to be certified as such. I'm still very dubious about game support in SteamOS.

That controller looks horrible. I just don't rate touch controls at all for most games. No matter what they feel imprecise, because your only point of feedback except for what's happening on screen are the squidgy bits of meat on the end of your digits.

You do realise they use haptic feedback? You're not just sliding your thumbs across a slab of glass like a tablet or phone. In theory they should provide resistance like thumbsticks (or whatever else kind of controls you need for certain games).

I certainly won't pooh-pooh it until I've tried it.
