The 1060 is very nip and tuck with a 970, so a second hand 970 for a decent price would be a good option.

I'm also now looking at more RAM on ebay (pretty cheap, as my ancient mobo takes DDR2) and maybe (at last) an SSD because fuck spinning rust it's 2017 motherfuckers.

I got rid off most of my old parts recently, but I think may have some suitable memory. Will check what it is. (if it's of interest you can have it for free)

I'd certainly take it. According to my notes, the stuff I have is 2x2GB PC6400 DDR2/800. My mobo is an EVGA nForce 780i SLI so it should have 4x slots, and hence 2x slots spare. (And according to its manual, it maxes out at 8 GB(!). Although that might simply be because there wasn't any RAM more sense than 2 GB modules when it was written in -- gulp -- 2007.)

For comparison, the CEX trade-in is £80 cash and £120 credit, and they sell them for £180. £120 is definitely cheap.

Confirmed that I have two free slots. If you have any spare DDR2, Dave (or anyone else), I'd happily take it off your hands.

Meant to look last night (I have 2 sticks in a computer that I think is Ddr2 era, and two more spare that I think are ddr3)

If I don't post anything by about 5pm, give me a prod.

OK, good Sir.

I have these definitely Ddr2 memory sticks, no idea how much memory it is, but I'd guess 4gb, maybe only 2.

Fuckin' A. Based on the serial number, I think those are 2GB sticks, which is perfect. I definitely want them! Happy to give you some cahs moneys too.

I'm not really fussed about money - they were destned to go dumpwards fairly soon anyway, so being able to help out a friend is enough for me. But if it's something that matters to you, name your price.

And naturally, some way to get them to you would be useful.

My 'rig' is now fully upgraded to tip-top last year spec :)

Solid 60fps at max settings in GTAV at 1080p. That'll do nicely.

Hope to actually get some gaming in soon!

I don't think you'll be able to enjoy your games until you've done some benchmarking first.

So: my GTX 970. Following RIDICULOUS SHENANIGANS because GAMING PCs, I ended up spending last weekend rebuilding the software from scratch with a clean install of Win10 onto a 64 GB SSD I had spare, plus a 2 TB drive for data. In the process I junked the 4x500GB RAID 0,1 I was using previously.

And now it all works and stuff. XCOM 2 at 1920x1200 "high" setting runs great. Looking around for a system destroyer to give it a workout, I settled on the demo for Forza Horizon 3, which runs at 15-20 fps regardless of resolution (with drops into single figures.) Not enough CPU, I think.

Next steps are to decide if I'm going to keep it as-is or upgrade further (definitely SSD and monitor, maybe CPU/mobo/RAM) and replace my iMac.

Benchmarks, prices and core counts officially confirmed by AMD today for Ryzen - 52% increase in IPC and $500 chip can perform just as well as Intels $1000.
Anandtech article

That's pretty impressive from a company lagging behind for so long.. Anyone that's bought a 6900k in the last few months is probably kicking themselves.

"Benchmarks" being AMD's marketing materials. I think we shouldn't book the parade until Ars/Anandtech have them in their hand.
