After months of speculation, it's finally been confirmed! Two more movies, prequels to the Lord of the Rings movies, are to come.

Beeb news link

To be directed by the bloke who did Pan's Labyrinth (Who also did Hellboy, an excellent superhero movie), and produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh (who did the Lord of the Rings movies together).

Hoorah!

Hoorah!

Also - Hellboy is massively underrated. The sequal should be good too. *crosses fingers*

You should totally recreate that on my handy online-text-adventure-thingy-builder.

Two movies? But the Hobbit barely has enough actual story for one movie, the rest is bollocks.

The first movie is the Hobbit.

The second movie is the time between that book and Lotr.

Yes, I'm scared too.

Or they could go for the UberNerd crowd and do a film of the Silmarillion.

To be fair, all of the Tolkein stuff is crap. The guy couldn't write to save his own life, he needed an editor with the biggest red pen known to man, and the stories are very overrated.

I enjoyed the movies because they got rid of all his shit, and are in fact the definitive version. And have dwarf-tossing jokes.

You're completely wrong, Lord of the Rings is in fact very readable and well written - though there's a few too many bad poems in it. And the Simarillion is near impenetrable. Still prefer friendly-rival and criminally largely unknown fantasy man Mervyn Peake though.

I read the first two (LOTR) books and got a page or two into ROTK and though 'Oh fuck it, I can't be arsed' and gave up. They were dull.

I sort of enjoyed the books. Sort of.

However, two words for the fanboys:

Tom Bombadil.

Dombadimbodildo. etc.

In what odd world are his works unknown? (Though I'll grant you his name is less well known).

Also, Tom Bombabastardildo needs to be erased from history, somehow.

Agreed, I understand what Tolkien was trying to do there - but God was that a stupid character. And annoying. Oddly funny-cutesy in the MMO, though. The first half of Fellowship is the weakest by far, as he's unable to decide on if it's a children's book or not ultimately.

Not the be all and end all of fantasy, by any means. Still, I wish people would stop ripping him off and give us some inventive new stuff for once.

You're fast becoming my favourite person ever, Pete! The first two Gormenghast books are absolutelyridiculouslyincredibly good! Unlike many, I really loved the BBC adaptation too.

You are all wrong. Tolkien is better than anyone, ever, except perhaps J Nash. And not even slightly dull.

And so I have.

Play Alansquest:

Something I knocked up in 5 minutes. There's only 3 rooms but I feel it has everything that the traditional Level 9 adventures had. Instant death mainly.

Another wave of the Peake fan flag here too.

Coincidentally, I was looking at his self portrait in the National Gallery yesterday. It is peculiar.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote:
Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play video game icon and Atari founder Nolan Bushnell in Atari.

Bushnell was an engineering student, puzzle-lover and game enthusiast (chess, Go, early computer games) who went from fixing broken pinball machines to launching Atari Corp., a video game manufacturer, in the early '70s. Its first product was a little game called Pong that transfixed kids in suburban rec rooms across the country and led to hundreds of millions of dollars worth of video game sales. Within a few years, he sold the company to Warner Communications for $28 million.
