I really enjoyed GTA4.

It was the first one I bought and played all the way through, only had brief plays of the others.

Can't wait to walk up to a building, trigger a cut scene, drive to a location and then carry out a heavily scripted mission where I have to do what the game tells me to do (and deviation/improvosiation results in having to restart the mission) then driving to another location to watch another cut scene.

Most underused open world ever.

Its also the first one I played through, but that has more to do with the ease of it compared to earlier ones than anything.

Every time I go back to GTA4, I think it's the best game ever. Then I stop playing it a week later.

It's much better on the PC

I hope this one is set in a medieval world with bonfires or in the future with a man called Dom.

It's interesting how much backlash there's been about this, both here and on Twitter. I wonder if people really are that disenchanted by Rockstar games.

I am, certainly. They're brilliant at getting things hyped up, but have been producing tedious re-hashes for as long as I can remember now. Even the more out-there Red Dead and LA Noire were just clones in a different setting, and after the initial hour or so it quickly becomes transparent. It's a shame, as I genuinely believe they have the talent and determination to create something great, but they've been missing the mark for too long.

I bet at least half the people moaning about it will end up buying it anyway. I must admit that I never finished 4 but I still spent many happy hours tootling around.

There’s no doubt in my mind that this will be a massive hit and sell loads but I’m not going to buy it.

I agree with Lewie.

I also felt that GTA4 was very limiting in the fact that I’d just been playing Crackdown and I could go *anywhere* I wanted.... car or not! It just wasn’t fun for me.

The vitriol surprised me too... I guess it is just that everyone in the world agrees with me that GTA4 is awful and Myp is wrong about it being good. Whodathunkit?

Seriously though, I guess 10 years since GTA3 came out is long enough that people have just decided it's a franchise that should be left to die now and not rehashed over and over. Like the Saw films should have stopped at 3, or Terminator should have stopped after 2. With so many great new titles around at this point in time as previously discussed, maybe we shouldn't be surprised that the announcement (without any detail at all) of an old dog going to perform an old albeit good trick at some point in the future is hardly going to set the world's hearts ablaze with joy.

I loved VC and SA but just didn't get in to 4 and stopped playing after a few hours. Any news on when and where this is set? I think that was a big part of the initial attraction for me that was missing in 4.

I think it'll be fantastic, like most Rockstar games. Trouble is, it's the same fantastic game we've been getting since GTA 3. I'm just totally burned out on it all. I think GTAIV was the final straw, because I just couldn't muster up the effort to play RDR even though I know it's a great game. Barely played it before getting bored. Will go back to it, like.

Hope they try something new - but what can they try realistically? Maybe they should leave V until next-gen and allow time for people to start giving a shit again.

Aye, I was about to say I thought people loved those two.

R* had got the quality back after a boring GTA4 or whatnot.

Yes, that is what everyone thought, until they woke up today and decided they didn't. Because people are odd.

I think R* make consistently good games, there's no denying that. The curious thing is that some people like RDR, some LA Noire and some GTA IV. Personally I liked GTA IV and couldn't be arsed with the other two, even though I could see quite plainly that they were good games (well, LA Noire is debatable...). Basically, it's not the games, it's the people. And how long R* can get away with sprucing up the same formula (a formula which, as I say, is genuinely excellent) before people get bored.

You can have too much of a good thing, innit.

I'm over the bloody moon this has been announced and despite the negative aspects of 4, it was the game I bought my 360 to play.

I remember the day GTA 1 came out, I nearly missed seeing the original Sabbath lineup in Birmingham I was that into it. GTA 2 game me more of the similar and that was fine as well, then GTA 3* was an epoch defining technical feat which had a marvellous story and they polished that into perfection with Vice City ten minutes later. Then, with nowhere else to go, they went everywhere else, making San Andreas where I was lost mysefl for months on end - and no complaints about the story/missions/music/sandbox compared to VC from me, either. It was/is paradise and an HD remake with cheevos is FUCKING MANDATORY.

As for 4, well, Liberty City 2.0 is a monumental place to explore and while there were certain bullshit elements, for every Roman there was a Jacob. I think some people forgot by 4 that half the fun is just dicking about in the sandbox and not giving a fish's tit about the phone calls or whatever. I've still got Tales... to play and can't wait to do so.

As for 5, I have no idea whether they'll bring some of the old elements that 4 lacked back in, and I don't care. Even if a tenth of the game is what I'm looking for, it'll still be value for money. But they're not stupid people and they will certainly have paid attention to feedback from GTA4 and competition elsewhere.

Highest of hopes.

Anyway, Saint's Row 3 is looking more and more like a DLC/online pass nightmare every time I read about it. The last one was heading that way.

People also seem to be really confused about R* as well - they seem to think RDR, GTA, Bully, LA Noire all come from a small studio in Scotland or somewhere. It's like me not wanting to buy Mass Effect 3 because I didn't like the last Tiger woods and Fifa.

As long as it starts being either a game, or a proper environment to explore as opposed to a series of checklists, then I'll be happy.

Whatever happened to the idea of Rockstar licensing Liberty City as an environment for other games to use? I liked that idea.

Apparently the 'V' is from the old Indian Head $5 bill. So I confidently predict it will be a Las Vegas setting.

If Mass Effect 3 was just golf set in space, you'd have a point. All of Rockstar's games have been pretty much exactly the same, bar setting, so I haven't a clue what you're trying to get at there.

I don't care really. I loves a big open city to explore. To this day I only play GTA4 (and VC, SA and 3) as sandbox games. I generally play the main quest until I unlock enough to keep me occupied and then cruise. I still haven't finished Vice City :)

There were Ping Pong and the Midnight Clubs, too. But apart from that, yes.

I like RDR and La Noire (which is good, because I bought them) but have put almost no time into either (which is bad, because I bought them). The idea of GTA4 bored me, I liked the far more comic-book GTA3 and particularly VC, so I didn't buy it. I haven't even played it (or seen it outside online videos!) so I could be wrong. SA bored me too (which is bad, because I bought it).

So I'm holding judgment on GTA: Milking the Cashcow until I see more.

It'll be Las Vegas if you pre-order from Game, but San Andreas if you get it from Gamestation, Liberty City if you get it from Tesco, London from Sainsbury's,...

If by different you mean driving round a sandbox city, from cutscene to cutscene, using the same awful game mechanics, I agree...

:this:

I'm not sure why they bothered with an open world in LA Noire, given it was empty, and there was nothing to do bar the random emergency calls and driving to the next main plot location.

But they didn't do anything with it. They made you laboriously endure driving around it (though fortunately you could fast-travel again), with fuck all to keep you entertained. It was bloody pretty—especially in black & white—but it didn't serve any purpose whatsoever.

That's why they should license it. Companies like id make a fair coin from engine licensing, why not let other companies set their games in the huge detailed worlds that Rockstar have built?

Some sort of 'Monkey Island' type adventure game with a proper city to explore would get my money.

I always thought it would be pretty cool if you could buy your own street or shop or even just a bit of graffiti somewhere with your name on it in GTA type games. I mean I wouldn't bother myself but I'm sure some people would pay shitloads to have something like that.

Didn't they do that in Crackdown? Or was it a competition to have your graffiti designs in the game?

If GTA V had the "real" mod type world and graphics, added to la noire facial tech, but kept with the same gameplay, that might actually be enough to satisfy my inner graphics whore and get me to buy it. :D

And all FPS are pretty much the same, bar setting. See also vertical shmups, 2D fighters... I could go on. RDR is a cowboy simulator with horses and bullet time and that. GTA is a crime game with cars and radio stations and overt comedy and that. Bully is Skool Daze in a sandbox with timetabled events and a wholly different way of playing the core experience. LA Noire is a face simulator wrapped around a guessing game plonked into a barren but accurate 50's version of a real city.

And don't make me invoke Table Tennis!

Seriously though, my wider point is that R* is a collection of studios, only one of which is the true GTa dev, and other titles should not reflect on their ouvre, which involves about ten near-perfect games and one flawed epic. Even then, as I've said, it's a sandbox... it doesn't all have to be good and I defy anyone to love every aspect of such a game.

It's not even really fair to think of them as one game, more a compendium.

Finally, why the fuck haven't R* or EA done Space Golf yet, anyway?

That was a competition. One of Miss Malabar's mates was one of the winners, but I didn't see his graffiti anywhere in the game. I should probably ask him where it was.

I'm not sure why they bothered with an open world in LA Noire, given it was empty, and there was nothing to do bar the random emergency calls and driving to the next main plot location.

Remember that Simpsons one from the last gen? Hit and Run? Gloriously renderd Springfield, tit all in it outside of what you got for the badly calibrated missions. I bought it as the closest thing to GTA for my Gamecube. Rather disappointing.

Las Vegas is my weak spot... but is it going to be different enough from the other games?

I lost a lot of my life playing video poker in the casinos of Las Venturas... I then did the same in Stillwater, although at least there was a cheev for it... I hate to think how sidetracked I'd get with a whole game set in Vegas.

Davpaz will be wrong though, obv.
