Quote:

In 1912, the UK government granted home rule to the Irish, India was a dominion of the crown until 1950, and the septics needed the French to turn up to swing the tide against the British forces over there, who, rather gamely, returned a few years later and burnt the capitol down to prove a point, hence it being the White House.

<chuckles>

That'll set the Cornish lot off again.

After reading this thread, I tried it out and it's great. Perfect for the php stuff I'm doing at work 'cos it syncs the files on my home computers too so I'm always using the right versions.

Following something through led me to here and my eyes fell upon this quote which I thought both amusing and sad, at the same time, a bit like the end to Tess of the D'Urbervilles:

That reminds me. I was watching Road Wars the other day, and two illegalists were shown, back to back.

1. Guy in a beemer clocked at 109mph on the motorway, entirely in the outside lane. Police claimed they had to 'drive at 134mph just to catch him up'. Judge was apparently disgusted at his behaviour on the roads. £550 and a 2-year ban.

2. Guy in the middle lane travelling 90-ish, cuts the unmarked police car up through a narrow gap beside a lorry then proceeds to weave through traffic, overtaking on the inside of several cars. £450 fine and a 6-month ban.

The whole presentation of the show would have you believe the guy in the first incident was a complete danger to society and far, far worse than the second guy. Nuts.

It was indeed, and I'm not complaining about the punishment itself. I was just a bit gobsmacked that because he was travelling faster than the second guy his actions were deemed considerably more dangerous. Maybe it was just the presenter, and there were other factors for the punishment.

I thought that 30 over was insta ban.

I'd rather take a short ban than points.

I (as everybody must know by now) dislike speeding laws on principle. You haven't actually done anything wrong until you crash / make someone else crash.

Yup.
And thinking about blowing someone up.

[edit]The other issue I have with drink driving laws is that it's been proved again and again and again that being tired is more dangerous than being drunk behind the wheel, but there's no laws about that.

Ditto. I don't know what the law is regarding temporary speed limits, but there was a normally-60 road I go down to work; long and straight, good surface and wide enough for three or four cars, but temporarily without centre lines. Temporary speed limit: 10mph. I went nine times faster than that down that road, safely. I would have been fucked if caught.

That must depend on how drunk and how tired. I can't recall ever being so tired that I would be a worse driver than I would be if I was shitfaced.

Sure. I'll see if I can find some of the research.

You can be done for driving whilst tired - but in reality if you get pulled over when you're falling asleep at the wheel there is no test that they can do to prove it, and you'll suddenly have woken up quite a lot I would imagine.

That guy who spent all night having cybersex and then drove his landrover onto a train line in front of a train was prosecuted for driving whilst unfit, as they could prove that he'd had no sleep and that this would have been a contributing factor.

Which was fair enough, after all, he caused a bunch of people to die.

Didn't they do him for manslaughter in the end as well?

I'm trying to get bikers to explain why they fit tiny numberplates... they're illegal and bike forums are filled with angry bikers complaining about the hassle they get 'off the man' for the plate.

It's illegal, I can't imagine any benefit to having it, WHY FIT ONE?

I may have invented the Cybersex bit. Although it was clear thats what he was up to.

Actually, Wikipedia 'says' phonesex, not cybersex. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selby_rail_crash

The slightly smaller ones that don't take the piss are okay. Still illegal, of course.

My brother's is an inch or so smaller in each dimension ( :hat: ), removing the whitespace around the edges. It doesn't look too different to a standard plate until you hold them side by side. The tiny ones are just asking to be hit with a fine.

A friend told me something mental.

A girl he knows was looking after some family's house and dog whilst they were on holiday, and sadly, the dog decided to curl up and die a day after they'd left. She called the family up and informed them of their pet's passing, and waited until the next day for them to decide what to do about it. Tearfully, they eventually asked her to take the animal to their vet and let him deal with disposing of the body.

She looked all over the house for something appropriate in which to haul around the corpse, but had to settle on a medium-sized roller-suitcase thing that the family had left behind. She bundled the dog in as carefully as she could, and set off for the vet's in the middle of Manchester city centre.

Apparently, it's somewhere near Oxford Road, and she had to negotiate some steps up a steep street on her way. Observing her struggles, some chivalrous soul grabbed the front of the case and helped her hoist it to the top. As soon as they were back on the pavement, though, he snatched the suitcase up with both hands and bolted around a corner, and was out of sight before she could reach it herself. He'd stolen a scabby old dog carcass.

I wish I could have seen the look on his face when he got the suitcase home, man. He must have thought it was some sort of divine fucking punishment.
