Word, bro.

I'm constantly annoyed* by the fact that a couple of generations back my wife's family owned a good-sized chunk of Gloucester, but the money went down a different branch of the family (to the male sibling rather than either of the two sisters, one of whom was my wife's gran), so my mother in law's cousin and her offspring are extraordinarily wealthy and we're not. I really, really really support the suffragettes, in retrospect.

*Well, not constantly. Sometimes I think about other things. Like cake.

Always the way, isn't it. My best mate's girlfriend is from a similar family, where the eldest boy (in this case her uncle, at the moment) gets all the money/property/land, and so while he [her uncle] owns a sizeable chunk of Surrey, her family are quite poor.

Which rather suggests to me that rich men are complete cunts, if they're happy to say "yeah, thanks Mum and Dad. Now I shall live a life byond the wildest dreams of Jay-Z. Fuck you sis! Enjoy the workhouse!" and then roll around in the money cackling rather than, you know, giving half to their sister notwithstanding the will.

Bastard. My wife and I earned similar amounts when we lived in London, but when we decided to have kids she won the "stay at home" argument because I'm easily beaten into submission. Plus as it turns out it's actually not that easy and is incredibly knackering, so on balance I'm happier at work.

I think families like that are quite set in their ways of stopping the wealth from becoming diluted. My father has a fair amount of money, and neither of my brothers speak to him any more. If I get anything when he passes away*, I'm sure as hell going to share it out if they aren't left anything.

I'm trying to decide how miffed to be as MrsA mentioned a friend of mine's response to her "You must come up and visit sometime" was "Have you seen where he lives?".

Mrs Grim...'s family used to own (and live on) Westbury Court, which is now Westbury Court gardens (not far from you, I believe). Then her mad great-aunt went nuts, gambled all the money away and burnt the manor house down.

Bobbyaro update.

He is six inches of bowel lighter, and will be in hospital for at least another day. Attempts to smuggle in an XBox 360 into the ward have thus far been unsuccessful.

I hope he doesn't mind me telling everyone about this.

Is that all it is these days? Two grand for five numbers? Better than a kick in the balls or a PS3 I guess.

Depends on how many other people also get five numbers, but in general I think lottery winnings have declined with the numbers of people playing.

In the slag off the post office/courier companies thread, I mentioned that some years ago I heard of a scheme that was proposed, whereby you could get your parcels delivered to your local pub. The pub carries insurance so you are safe from beign ripped off, and the pub benefits from you probably having a pint when you go and pick them up. And you don't have to wait in for something which doesn't come, or have to schedule redeliveries.

Its now live with 500 pubs so far part of it (brilliantly, it would appear about 20 of which are in walking distance of my house, suggesting it may currently be a bit Londoncentric) - http://www.useyourlocal.com

I searched for pubs within 20 miles of me, and tons came up all over London. I then clicked "are accepting parcels" and they all disappeared :(

Most of the pubs I know of are completely closed and empty before lunchtime, so unless they pay someone to be there just in case a parcel comes how is this ever going to work?

They've got to sit in waiting for the beer and snacks anyway. Besides, proper pubs are serving by 11, which means prepping from 9-10.

And where the fuck do you lucky bastards get your single post run before 1 in England?

A bigger problem would, I think, be the alcoholism and liver psirosis of landlords being paid in dozens of pints a day, if this ever properly took off, combined with eBay.

Parcels come at all sorts of times, I also see the landlord of our local out and about before opening time. I guess that a few pubs might be willing to become parcel depots but I can't see it really taking off.
