Another for the “wireless charging is a pointless gimmick” gang here. It’s just so slow, and isn’t really any more convenient than plugging a cable in.

That's utter rubbish.

The emboldened part, anyway. Obviously it's slow as balls.

A lot faster now. The new 15W pads will wirelessly charge a phone faster than we could charge with cables a few years back. (Still slower than a modern cabled fast charger putting out 20-30 W, admittedly.)

I have a circular pad thing that you need to make sure the phone is placed correctly on. Doesn’t seem much more convenient than plugging a reversible cable into. If you could just place it down anywhere on your nightstand it’d be a different argument.

Or if you could wear 10 charging thimbles. Then you'd look fucking awesome AND charge your phone while you use it.

Something like this is the way to go, all you have to do is get the phone sort of in the middle and it'll charge fine.

Plus if you've got an always-on screen it makes for a nifty clock and notification centre.

Use cases:

1) on my nightstand, having a wireless charger means never having to fumble around in the dark looking for the cable then fumble around more plugging it in. Overnight, I don't care how long charging takes.
2) on my desk, having a wireless charger and Bluetooth headphones means I can put my phone down when I get to my desk and it'll pick up a charge, then scoop it back up when heading to meetings, lunch, coffee, etc. I might do that 15-20 times per day so not having to plug something in is meaningful.

It's not life changing but it is convenient.

Of course in my day, my Nokia 3210 would last for 3 months in between charges... and it didn't matter which way the charger was plugged in as it was circular.

They can do it now but it's very inefficient, very noisy, very expensive, and it generates a lot of heat and causes cancer, but we'll get it eventually.

I just went for a cheap and cheerful option for my desk. A couple of USB charging things that double as stands. They were only a few quid apiece, so they're not designed for the particular phone, but they do the job at least. The phone on the right is my old Galaxy Note 1 which no longer detects SIM cards so I use it as an always-on Google Analytics thing instead.

Pretty sure the Pixel 2 will be my next phone, I'm fed up with Samsung pushing down their crap updates to my S7 (NO I FUCKING DON'T WANT TO USE SAMSUNG CLOUD AND YOU BROKE MY DRIVE INTEGRATION YOU FUCKBUNNIES), or HTC abandoning the One-X after about 18 months, it was something like that anyway, as I recall the phone was basically 'abandonware' before my contract was even up on it, in terms of getting OS updates.

It rankles a bit that Google have entered the 'premium' smartphone space when the Nexuses of various iterations were all about high-end smartphone tech for a midrange sort of price - but I guess that's where the dollars are as far as Google is concerned.

Either way, I'm happy to stick with Android, but the 'pure' Google phones seem to be the way to go.

Contract is up next April, so we might even have them on the IOM by then......

I'm not on the wireless charging train yet, but I can see the appeal in the future.

Can you get wireless charging mats big enough to take multiple items? I see that as being super convenient for the future, instead of having cables for phones, watches, headphones (er... and other stuff too...), just plonk them all on one pad overnight.

Also, if cars had a section on the dash (or, sensibly, in a cubby) that could also charge the phone while one is driving.

I tend to put my phone down in the same few places throughout the day - bedside table, in a dash-cubby in the car, work desk, arm of sofa so if these could also deliver a trickle of charge just to keep the phone topped up that'd be super.

Looks like the device has to sit centrally on the little 'cross'....What are the margins for positioning like?

I was kind of hoping that it would be a basic mat you could just chuck things on, with little regard for positioning, but perhaps that's a simple view

I'm quite amused that on the Google Play store right now the basic model Pixel 2 is actually cheaper than the Pixel (when you take into account that the £30 difference wouldn't get you an extra 32GB of storage).

My Nexus 5X froze today and won't come back on. I managed to get it to the boot menu by holding power+vol down, but after I selected 'start'...nothing.

Tried again, after selecting 'start' I got the Google logo, and then, nothing.

Now i can't even get to the boot menu.... I think it's toast, sadly. I've had it 16 months, which feels disappointing, moreso as my iphone 3G and 4S still work - and I was really quite pleased, battery life aside, with the phone.

Post subject:  Re: Google Android

So the Pixel 2 costs £629 which is about the going rate for premium smartphones, except crazy Apple ones, of course. Price wise it's acceptable.

Early impressions of the phone from review sites who've had a hands-on at the demo seem good, but no headphone jack (WHY?) and the fingerprint scanner is still on the back which is stupid.

I'm not even much of a listener to music or suchlike on my phone, but I do occasionally plug headphones into it to listen to something. I don't understand the logic of removing something as neutral as a headphone jack, unless it's just to sell you the £150 wireless bud thingies.

The fingerprint scanner on the back is a pain. Maybe it's something you get used to but it seems like a daft choice to me.

Still, it'll probably be my next phone, I'm fed up with third-party fucking with Android, and miss the 'clean' Android experience of my Nexus 5.

As a regular headphone user, I’ve got through A LOT of wired headsets cause they always seem to break at that hard plastic but near the jack. It’s always the same, it feels like a loose wire or something and you’re turning the jack around in the socket or bending the wire to try and get it to pump sound out of both speakers instead of one; oh wait, no, now the sounds crackly; no, here goes, oh fuck, now Siri thinks I want to talk to her sporadically, nope, here goes, the sweet spot, and it’s back in my pocket with you Mr Phone, nope fucking lost sound in the left again.

Im not saying I’d pay eARPHONE money for a wireless pair but wired headsets are gash and I’d rather pay a bit more so I didn’t have to fork out more money in 3 months time.

I have 3 pairs of bluetooth headphones from China for less than a tenner, probably not your Audiophile standard, but absolutely fine for listening to music on your phone with, they are as good as the £45 Sennheiser's I had as a comparison - I have never bought anything more expensive. I bought them for the exact reason Sat said.

They're pretty good. A bit lacking in bass but ok for the most part and absolutely fine for audiobooks and whatnot. It is one more thing to remember to charge but because I don't have some stupid shitty phone with no headphone jack I know I could always use the pair of buds that are stuffed down in one of the pockets in my work bag.

Which is why most Bluetooth headphones come with a cable so you can connect them if you run out of battery. Just keep it in your bag or desk drawer. Not that it really affects me. Mine are amazing and last weeks on end.
