You should try it. And take a picture while you're at it.

I do indeed, it just seemed something that was very specific to MS stuff so, if it was me, I'd have posted it elsewhere. That's just me though.

I guess the thought process was: ooh that error remind me of a similar error I had on a different topic, I'll post a reply mentioning it in the thread I just read it in, but as it's not strictly related to the topic in hand, I'll mention that, so everyone realises that I am aware it's not the same thing, shall I bother posting? Because if this post hadn't of come up, I probably wouldn't mention it, but seeing as it has, I may as well.

either that or: If I post this, it will get right on Bamba's nervers, and there is nothing I like better than getting on Bamba's nerves.

Oo good call. Not tried my Oppo for sound yet but it was one of the reasons I chose it. It has something called Maxxaudio too which is also supposed to be pretty cool.

Oppo give you a proper set of their own branded in ears worth £30 or so too which is nice.

You could put the wireless charger in a plastic food bag (or something similar) and have the top of the bag above the waterline so the charger itself doesn't get wet, and then press the phone against the charging pad underwater.

I think it would work.

Clearly I am not going to try this with my own phone though.

The argument 'for' the 6P is vanilla Android and the timely upgrades that come with it so it depends whether you're bothered by that or not. Traditionally the Samsung would've packed a better camera but the 6P's is massively better than previous Nexii so I don't know if that's still true or not. Those factors aside there's no reason not to strongly consider the S7 if price isn't a thing.

cheers Bamba, much appreciated. Will do some sums tonight and then end up getting the P9 or Z5 following a pique of contrariness.

Only the power of the S7 makes it possible. In your face Nexus 6P with your timely Android updates.

The ability to charge the phone wirelessly whilst underwater was actually a primary purchasing consideration for me as at the weekends I'm a mermaid called Havfrue who Facebooks a lot.

In schola didici, nerds!

Although I only took the class as I fancied a girl doing it (methodist preacher's daughter). After that year, she left as her family moved to Wales and I was done with it. Years later, we got drunk on Covent Garden as a result of sending messages on friends reunited and a bit after that she moved to New Zealand. There's a lesson in there, somewhere.

OK, so what's the deal with these Cyanogen mods or whatever they are called? apparently there's a Marshmallow one for my phone. It talks about ADB and other stuff that sounds complicated though. Has any one here used these mods and had any success?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CyanogenMod

It's not a mod despite the name, it's a full replacement OS using the open source version of Android as a basis but with their own tweaks and features built in. They're perfectly legit operating system builds, though the level of support you're going to get for your model of phone will depend how much of a community exists for it. I put a version of it on a shitty old temp phone I've got so I could move more stuff onto the SD card and it all went fine. You will need to do an amount of fucking around with utilities at the command line so it's up to you whether you're comfortable doing it. If you're happy with the phone and what it does right now then personally I'd leave well enough alone.

Cyanogen (the company) also have a product that allows Android devs to write apps that deeply integrate with the company's operating system, which is called Cyanogen OS, which is not the same thing as CyanogenMod. This product is called... MOD. So Cyanogen's MOD is not the same thing as CyanogenMod, and Cyanogen's MOD runs on Cyanogen OS but not CyanogenMod.

My Android fun continues !

Two days ago MrsJC's tablet started acting funny. It's a Galaxy Tab 4 10". I tried to tell her that it could probably be fixed cheaply but she got herself into a panic and bought a Ipad Air 2. She's had the Tab 4 for around two years (just over so out of warranty) and the battery logo appears and the screen starts flashing after about ten seconds. I did some research and there are a couple of fixes. The first is to unplug and reseat the connector. Apparently if it still flashes after that it needs a new battery and the one in there does look a bit bloated so I ordered one of those (£6 genuine Samsung) and whilst I'm there I will replace the charging port as it's a bit floppy. That was £4.

If I can get it fixed I will wipe it and give it to Mum, who has fallen in love with the little Amazon tablet we gave her last year :) if it's too heavy for her I will try playing with Cyanogen :D

Pretty neat to hear that native support for Android apps/Google Play is being added to Chromebooks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLYzX0G0YKQ
Makes a Chromebook a far more viable alternative to a Windows laptop in my view, especially at lower prices. You can't really get a cheap Windows laptop that isn't compromised in some way, but cheap Chromebooks are usually pretty good. Especially if you want something lightweight with good battery life.

Before this announcement, I could use a Chromebook for maybe 75% of my computing, which means it could not be my primary laptop.

After this announcement, I can do almost everything. The only things left that would be annoying about a Chromebook instead of a Win/Mac laptop:

1) Hobby software development (honestly, I tell myself this is important, but I never actually do any.)
2) No access to interesting games on Steam. But I have plenty to play on the PS4, if I'm honest with myself.
3) Much less powerful RAW photo processing and library tools ie. no Lightroom.

At this point, I have to get real about whether Lightroom -- for which I'm already paying £100/year in software costs -- is important enough to me to hang on to, or if I should jettison it and switch to mobile tools.

Related: I switched my work laptop from a MacBook to a Pixel 2 LS and couldn't be happier. The Pixel hardware is beyond lovely (but very spendy, of course) and ChromeOS is a joy to use.

Post subject:  Re: Google Android

I'd be in the same boat except 1 & 3 not being a factor for me.

I have a Vaio Pro 13 Windows laptop, and it is very lovely, but again very spendy. I've had it two years, and have no plans to replace it, but whenever I do get around to replacing it, I'll now be seriously considering a Chromebook.

I'm not really directly familiar with Adobe software these days, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see them push harder into Android support with stuff like this happening.

I'd love for Steam to support Android too. I know they have a basic app now, but I mean add it as a supported platform in addition to Windows/Max/Linux, there's loads of games on there that have some kind of Android version.

This might be limited to me only or my model of phone but I figured I would ask any way.

Has any one had battery issues lately? When I first got my phone if I didn't watch Youtube or hammer the internet the battery would easily last more than two days. However, about ten days ago my battery was barely making it through the day. I hadn't changed anything or installed any other apps and was beginning to worry that the battery was screwed.

Then about three days ago it returned to working for the same length of time it did when I got it. Weird !

Make your mind up. You said you wanted something that you can email and browse with for £100, now you're complaining that it doesn't have the very latest software on it.

I'm confused.

Any way, yeah they are both a little light on specs because they're less than £50 but either would do what you wanted them to do without issue. I had that Swees phone for a year and used to play games and emulators on it with no issues. Odd that Mal brings it up, but my Iphone 4 used to CTD all the time. Especially with later OSes on.

The best "Budget" sort of phone right now is this.

But it costs more than your £100.
