The Moto G is an entirely adequate phone, I use it for work. Apart from it just randomly reboots sometimes.

Couldn't be arsed sending my phone off to HTC so took it to my network supplier. Young lad who served me was next to useless. They appear they are happy to lose business to their competitor as they did absolutely nothing to make me want to stay. Phones gonna take 4-6 weeks to fix. 4-6 weeks!

Good news is that the loaner phoner boner they gave me is the same phone albeit with a massive crack down the screen. Anyway, contract due to end soon so I'll be buying my next phone from Amazon.

I wish all my phones were dual SIM. Saves carrying around a separate work phone.

Hence the dual-sim...

I can turn the work sim off if I need to, or I can see that the call is incoming from the work sim and ignore it. (that used to be easier, the sims were colour coded, but since I've been lollypopped the colours are the same).

Voice command fail.

Say OK Google then "set alarm seventeen forty" and it knows you want to set an alarm but can't parse the time element because it bizarrely doesn't understand 24 hour clock format. Now say "set alarm five forty" and it sets the alarm properly but the confirmation voice message actually bloody says, "Setting alarm for seventeen forty." So it knows how to say it but not how to hear it!

So i was thinking about having a new phone in the 200€ range, and from what i heard, the moto G is the phone to beat, but i don't like its look. The Asus Zenfone looks great, but there aren't many reviews around, and the Samsung S3 is also around those prices.

Besides that i have a work colleague that wasn't to sell me an Xperia Z1 for around 150€, but i'm not really into buying used stuff, specially for something that usually doesn't last long like smartphones.

What are your opinions of where should i spend my money?

The Moto G V2 is a really solid if unspectacular phone.

I got one for Mrs Hearthly after she broke her S4 Mini (£350!) less than six months into a two year contract. (The phone was 'free' at £35 per month over two years. Yes, we get fucking gouged for phones over here.)

It's not going to win any style awards, but it uses a mostly vanilla Android (very similar to my Nexus 5), and the specs are decent, as is the 720p screen. (Anything more than that is wasted on a phone IMO.)

Also because it's Motorola (i.e Google) it gets Android updates very quickly, unlike other manufacturers who let their phones become abandonware after 18-24 months and/or take months to roll out OS updates.

Don't underestimate that vanilla Android experience, it's so much better than all the shit that other manufacturers like to stick on their phones.

Pretty crap camera would be the only real criticism, but a lot better than on the 1st Gen Moto G.

I'd recommend it if you just want a usable, solid mobile.

Anyone who, like me, was slightly annoyed by the removal of the refresh button from the nav bar in the phone version of Chrome might be pleased to know that the most recent update has added a 'pull down to refresh' feature that's very useful.

From your phone? Yes. But check they've backed up first.

And back them up to your computer also.

Last year's auto-hoffsome April fools thing was brilliant, where it backed up a photo then stuck a photobombing Hoff in it. I then saved the photo to my phone, where of course it backed up the photo and immediately stuck another Hoff in it....

If I delete a photo from my tablet using the Photos app it warns me that it'll be deleted from all location when I do it so I'd be wary here.

Why? It's basically Chromecast +. If you have a lot of Google stuff (or a plex server) then it's ideal.

Not really, a Roku will do more for cheaper, so will the Amazon Fire Stick.
The Nexus Player is missing a lot of apps apparently. No iplayer, no spotify, etc... I'm sure they will come in time, but other options already have them.

I've never seen any of these little box things come close to the functionality of a cheap media centre PC.

I mean, our bedroom 'media centre PC' is just Mrs Hearthly's old laptop connected to a big telly via HDMI, and comes with all the functionality of a full Windows PC. (And the kitchen 'media centre PC' is an ancient Samsung laptop with a monitor sat on top of it and a wireless keyboard and mouse. IIRC that laptop must be six years old or more now.)

It's £80 and you use a remote. Like a TV.

A laptop isn't £80 and doesn't have a remote. It isn't like a TV.

Seriously? Did any of your 'comparison' machines cost anything like £80?

Right? I've got a £30 dongle stuck in the back of my TV. It plays stuff off my media server, Netflix, Amazon, Youtube, and a massive amount of other things. What exactly am I missing that would justify buying even a 'cheap' laptop instead?

Well they were basically free, since they were just reprovisioned old machines that would have gone to the tip otherwise.

What are you missing that would require you to buy the Nexus player?

I'm looking at getting one to *replace* a (an?) HTPC, amusingly. The PC that I've got can't do hardware accelleration on HTML5 or flash video. Which is shit.

My plan was: powered USB hub into an OTG cable, into the micro USB. My wireless keyboard/mouse will go into that with a USB IR receiver so I can use the Logitech Harmony remote. As long as I can get a RDC app, it'll be perfect.
