Indeed. But I expect the type of person who would take a watch as well as a phone, and know that they were both linked, and want access to the contents of the phone rather than just to flog down the pub, is also the type of person who would get me to tell them my pin when they mugged me...

No. no. No. They take the phone so you can't immediately call for help. More often than not, they are dumped around the first corner.

I either read it somewhere, or it came up in conversation. It'd make some form of sense, though.

<shrugs>

If something comes up in conversation and it seems reasonable, I'm quite happy to take it that way. If Bamba wants to treat life as an examination paper or be spoonfed information without putting any form of thinking into it*, then that's all good. And I wouldn't take 100% of everything I say as compeltely serious.

*Mug someone for wallet and phone to get some extra legging it time. Get cash, check phone and make a choice if it is worth selling on or not, most of the time probably not, discard phone as too much hassle for the reward, keep cash. Taking the phone stops the police being called immediately. Seems a reasonable course of events if Iwere to be in the business of mugging. I could have read it or the policeman I was out with the other month could have mentioned it. it's not consequwential information for me, so I don't store it in its entirety.

Oh piss off. You were very firm with your assertion and so, when I couldn't find anything to back it up, I asked you about it; is that not reasonable? Trying to turn this round on me just because myp's now calling you out on it's a real dick move.

The Amazon free app of the day is a space bulk esque game. Not plagued it yet, but it looks quite good.

Fucksticks. The touchscreen on my phone seems to have developed a weird deadspot within which it only sometimes registers touches. I found this out when an icon got placed there by default and I couldn't move or delete the fucking thing. I had to end up using a large widget to nudge it out of the deadspot so I could get hold of it which was exactly as ridiculous a process as it sounds.

I had hoped it was just a weird issue with the Apex launcher but I uninstalled that and got the same behaviour with both the GEL and Sense launchers so it looks like a hardware problem right enough.

Is it really bad that my very first thought was, "Ooh! I could buy a new phone with a better camera!" Having to replace a phone I bought 8 months ago isn't very good but seriously HTC, your cameras are shite; I need to take practically every shot in HDR mode otherwise it looks like ass. 'Ultrapixels' my arse.

Could you not turn the phone upside down to move the icon?

No, the 'desktop' doesn't revolve; does it do that on your phone?

It does if I turn the appropriate launcher setting on. I don't though, because that's odd.

Well, yeah, I suppose I could've dug through Apex's setting to look for such an option; I'll bear that in mind if it happens again.

I did a bit of poking around since posting that and yeah, HTCs warranty is actually two years so it should be. Thankfully I bought it from Amazon though so I might try them first as I know they're pretty good with this kind of stuff. I'm a little bit worried they'll tell me to fuck off when the see it because there's a small dent on the front and one on the back from drops so they could blame the touchscreen issues on that but we'll see. The idea of reverting back to my shitty backup phone while this gets looked at fills me with horror which means I'll put if it off longer than I should...

Why would you test this by switching launchers and not simply using any other app on your phone?

Fire up a drawing app or something, that should give you a pretty clear idea of what's going on with the touchscreen.

Because not every other app on the phone has a reactive UI object in the affected area. And because I wanted to completely rule out the fact that Apex wasn't sitting in the background fucking stuff up, given that the launcher is always active. It took about a minute and a half to whip it off, do a test, then stick it back on again and restore all the settings/desktop object from an SD card backup so it's not like it was a lengthy process.

I actually don't have anything like that on the phone, what I did to though is fire up the HTC test app and run the 'screen drawing test' which showed a massive strip across the middle of the screen that rarely reacted.

Hivemind!

3 have a deal that is 600 minutes of calls, unlimited texts and data for £35 a month with an S5 and no upfront cost.

Vodaphonce are offering me unlimited minutes, texts and 1Gig data for about the same with an S5 and no upfront.

how much is a gig? I will probably use data when I am out and about but not a ggreat deal, but the 250 meg I have at the moment doesn't seem to last a very long time.

What should I do??? I've decided i want an S5 and more data ut I don't know how much data!

I use twitter, facebook, g+ and beex and want to send mobile pictures to MrsA.

But if it helps I have 500MB and usually only use it all if I've fucked up and absent-mindedly done things I'd normally do at home on wifi, like downloaded a few albums on Spotify or some apps or something.

About a week, but that isn't using it very much, I don't think. Maybe 1 gig won't be enough.

Why don't you just look in the settings and see how much data you use in each monthly period for the last few months (it keeps a history) and then discount any deals that offer you less than that?

Loads I'd have thought, unless it sends them the full size that the camera takes then they should be one or two MB at most.

Thanks, Bamba! I didn't know I could do that!

Looking at it, it seems that I use about 135 meg a week at most, so fi I get 1 gig, then I can use almost double that a week. So, 1 gig should be fine, I suppose.

Go for the Three deal.

Are you ever going to use more than 600 minutes? I know I don't get anywhere close to that. However, I have used my phone to download shit on occasion, without worrying about it, as I have unlimited data.

Three also give you 4G for free, and you can use your data and phone minutes abroad for no charge in something like 14 different countries now.

Thanks. I can say "The three deal is 4g" as the vodaphone one isn't. Jolly super good.

As ever I'm not exactly at the vanguard here but I've had a Nexus 5 for about six weeks now (my trusty old HTC One X still worked but the battery really was pretty shagged, and of course it isn't user replaceable).

Anyway, Nexus 5, hands down the best phone I've ever owned by a country mile, and ZOMG vanilla Android is so much nicer than the HTC skinned version and particularly the fucking abomination that Samsung manage to make of it. (I got Mrs Hearthly a Galaxy S4 Mini and it took me about an hour to strip the thing back to a usable state for her.) In fact I'd say vanilla Android gives iOS a good run for its money in terms of clean and minimalist design.

On top of that I get all the latest Android updates as soon as they're released (currently on 4.4.4), as opposed to the One X which HTC basically abandoned after about 18 months. (Which is when I pledged that my next phone would be vanilla Android.)

The only thing that disappointed out of the box was that it doesn't have a charging LED indicator, despite having an LED on the phone, but there's a great little free app called 'Charging LED' which allows you to set the LED to whatever colour you want for whatever state of charge you want (so mine goes from deep red through oranges and yellow and finally to green).

I realise I've pretty much signed my life over to Google by agreeing to anything and everything that it wants to do, but it does make stuff jolly convenient. (The spookiest thing was the way it seemed to know all my 'custom dictionary' style words without me actually defining any of them, including specific IOM place names and stuff like that.)

Also we've recently just got 4G over here and I've seen it hit over 100mb/s down and 35 mb/s up, which is crazy speeds for a phone.

Other stuff - swipe is the best text input system ever in the history of the world. (I realise swipe has been around for ages and was originally a separate app, but I never used it.)

The Siri equivalent is fantastic.

The way all the various Google apps interact and sync across phone/PC/laptop/Drive/etc is awesome.

Fab phone, I'm a total convert to Google phones now, next one will deffo be a Nexus 6/7 depending on how long this one lasts - I generally do around two years per phone.

Just a heads-up there was a shitass Windows Update went out last week that incorrectly flagged up some Nexus devices as an Acer ADB Interface (or some such crap).

You won't notice anything is amiss until you plug your Nexus into your PC and it totally fails to appear as a drive in My Computer, which is what happened to me this evening.

The fix is to uninstall AND DELETE the erroneous Acer driver files from within Device Manager (if you don't do the delete option it'll immediately just put the shit Acer ones back on), then reconnect your Nexus, and it should pull back the original Nexus 5 drivers and work again.

There are a few variations floating around out there but that's the one that worked for me.

Rather irritating.

Done. Eventually. Ordered a blue S5. I thought a gold one was a bit, well, Lancastrian.

Getting too many calls from recruiters and stuff. Also, my current number has too few eights.

Done. Eventually. Ordered a blue S5. I thought a gold one was a bit, well, Lancastrian.

Samsung throw a few more things at the wall during their IFA presentation:

  • Galaxy Note 4. The screen size stays the same but the resolution goes up to QHD and the actual construction is a good deal nicer this time around apparently (presumably in response to the reception of the One range). I'll probably pick one of these up when they're properly released next month.
  • Galaxy Note Edge. A bonkers variant on the Note 4 which has a flat screen apart from two horizontal strips at either side which are angle. Fuck knows what's going on there.
  • Gear S smarwatch. New Tizen-running smartwatch with massive fucking screen; the watch takes it's own SIM card so you can use it entirely without a phone, if you're a mentallist who wants to type on and shout at his wrist.
  • Gear VR headset. A VR headset, made by the Occulus guys, which doesn't seem to do much that Google Cardboard doesn't do; with the added downside that the Gear VR can only be used with the Galaxy Note 4. So totally niche and pointless basically.

Nexus 5 has just had a price drop, now down to a frankly ridiculous £266 on Amazon.

Doubtless the Nexus 6 is imminent but that's a huge amount of phone for the money.
