Lots of middling reviews for the Nexus 9, for the money they're asking (£399 for the 32GB model), an iPad Air 32GB for £359 makes it look pretty stupid.

Nearly all the reviews I've read mention the laggy user experience and slightly-not-there build quality of the Nexus 9, simply not acceptable in a £400 tablet. (I'm discounting the 16GB model as that's scarcely a usable amount of space on a tablet these days.)

I admit that I haven't spent a massive amount of time with mine as yet but I'd disagree with aspects of that review. There's certainly no 'rough edges' on mine and it's a really weird thing to accuse the screen of being a fingerprint magnet as I can't see how it possibly attracts more fingerprints than any other touchscreen device. The performance on mine is smooth as you like throughout as well, certainly it's noticeable nippier than any other Android device I've owned and a lot more pleasant to swipe around in than even the latest Samsung tablets. The point about the 'loose' back is absolutely true though and real ball-drop on HTCs part. I'll never notice it once I finally get a case for the thing but there are areas of the back where it's noticeably not attached to the body of the thing very well which is irritating.

One of the commenters on that article notes that the reviews for the N9 are all over the shop and it almost seems like people are reviewing two different devices which I agree with, the range of different opinions on certain aspects is very odd. Generally speaking though I don't think that review reads very well either as an article in itself or as a critique. I think it's the 'dumbed down' style of it compared to, say, an Engadget review that's annoying me but I appreciate it's potentially two different audiences.

I don't think I'd turn to the grauniad for tech reviews any more than I would the news.I thougt the review was half finished. It just seemed to stop.

Any weird things expected to happen after you upgrade, or is it a case of suck it and see?

This review goes into a lot more detail and seems pretty even-handed and comprehensive.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/11/11 ... omparison/

Again the build quality and screen issues are mentioned.

Quote:
Build quality / quality control issues that border on embarrassing. Light bleed, back flex, snapping noises, and a general feeling of low-cost hardware. It's not just me, either, complaints are increasingly common.

K1 Denver just does not seem to be shaping up as the performance powerhouse we hoped it would be, the Nexus 9 stutters and lags at times, and generally is just kind of rough around the edges.

Pictures of shonky ones here - http://www.idigitaltimes.com/nexus-9-pr ... ers-393867

If the tablet was dramatically undercutting what Apple were charging for iPads maybe it'd get cut some slack, but they're asking more than iPad Air money, and not much less than iPad Air 2 money.

Almost. They were announced at the same time and the Nexus 9 is available to buy right now worldwide but the Nexus 6 can't be ordered quite yet (in the UK at least). They've put the price and range of models up on the website so the actual ordering is expected to open soon.

I believe they were meant to be the same device, but the quality control was so poor they've got an acceptable screen size range of three inches.

So lollipop then? Loads of changes, including the keyboard layout. Seems okay, but the changes to the options bars from swiping the top down are a little annoying. Also it has broken my camera login option. And marvel puzzle quest.

Holy fuc k lollipop is a mess! It is virtually unusable. Massive input lag, black screens, apps just dying, previously good apps not working, freezing so much freezing! The facial recognition login doesn't work at all now! And I am using this on a Nexus. Seriously, don't "upgrade" yet if you haven't, it is really shit.

Overall it's been OK for me on a Nexus 5, battery life seems a touch better, general use is snappy and responsive (but then again it was snappy and responsive before).

Not sure any of the random UI changes seem 'better', they're just different.

It has broken my Reflex fruit machines app (waiting on an update for that now), and Hola went nuts and drained the battery constantly so I had to uninstall it.

On balance it's not made my phone any better, and I miss my fruit machines app, would go back to the previous Android version if I could.

Won't update at the first opportunity next OS release!

My banking app didn't work on my Nexus 9 but it has since been updated and apart from that I haven't really had any issues. I do use my tablet a lot less than my phone though, and much fewer apps even when I am using it, so it's probably not as good a test as others are getting here. It definitely hasn't been anything close to virtually unusable though.

ETA: I just remembered that my video playing app of choice didn't work on lollipop either but there was a nightly build available that worked round that.

Nexus 7 - original (2013?). Weird that it is okay on others, it is really, really bad on mine. Soo, slow. I was trying to use it last night, and playing Marvel PQ, and you know where the loading screen goes through the Hero's symbols, there was maybe one every 3/4 seconds, rather than 2/second as usual. Pressing any of the bottom buttons takes ages to respond. Chrome seems to lock out, the keyboard stutters onto the screen in jagged animation, then the screen goes black, when it comes back the keyboard is just a white box covering 1/3 of the screen!

The worst thing is, I can't roll-back as apparently that wipes the SD card.

Well, yeah, you'd be reinstalling the entire OS so it's going to take the contents of single chunk of internal storage with it. Although I'm not sure how that means you can't roll it back; just back up any photos or whatever and you're ready to go surely?

My Gmail android client updated today.
Whereas before I had the account name in the banner of the widget, now it has gone and just says "inbox" in a garish red banner.

Thanks for that Google, now I can't tell which email account I'm looking at, at a glance.

Fix it Gaywood.

Picked up my Nexus 6 yesterday and have finally finished setting it up after my wifi went completely to shit yesterday*. I'm really pleased with it; it's lovely and fast, the screen is gorgeous and it's very 'premium' feeling in the hand. It's not plasticy like your usual Samsung kit but it's not as heavy as my One Max either and just feels really good to hold. I can't switch over to it fully quite yet as I need to get a nano-SIM for it but I'll sort that tomorrow and then the sodding One Max can get wiped and sold. I'm very happy I chose this rather then the Note 4 now.

*The router Sky give you is an utter shite heap, the internet connection to other devices regularly gets flooded out entirely if I'm torrenting something on my main PC and I'm pretty sure yesterday's wifi issues were because it decided there were just too many wireless devices connected to it and started fucking up. It's demonstrably and functionally shitter than the five year old router we had from Be in ex-Mrs B's flat.

Did 5.0.1 fix your 1st gen nexus 7? Helen's 2nd gen went straight to that, it took so long for lollipop to roll out to it, and it's super-silky.

Facial recognition can be re-enabled in settings, apparently.

So what's a decent and reasonably priced Android tablet then?

Hearthstone has just been released for Android and I want to play Hearthstone on a tablet without having to lash out BIG CASH MONIES on an iPad.

For reference, the game runs well on an iPad Air (Mrs Hearthly has one) but it's not exactly amazing (equivalent of low graphics settings on PC and 30FPS, not that it matters for a card game but it's indicative of the fact there's some graphicsy type stuff going on), so I'd be after an Android tablet that has about as much grunt as an iPad Air, not some horrible cheapy bit of rubbish.

On the phone side of things Google appear to have gone mad and decided to charge as much for the new Nexus phone as Apple want for an iPhone, and the Nexus 9 (a) Doesn't seem to be cheap and (b) Hasn't reviewed that well.

The original iPad Air is down at £320 since the iPad Air 2 came out, so I'd be looking to spend less than that, otherwise I'd just get an iPad Air.

Hmmmm second gen Nexus 7 for £182 could be a tempting proposition..... Apparently it'll update to Lollipop as well.
