It's also Friday, which is surely worth a cheer or two. Man, it's nice starting your week on a Wednesday.

More importantly (to me, anyway), it's also pay day.

Someone's leaving do in work. The email goes around. Not only does it involve karaoke, but it has this paragraph:

Our Dress code is smart, no scruffy jeans, sportswear or branded trainers will be permitted into the venue. If you are not dressed suitably for a night out then you may be refused entry to the venue and no refund will be given for your karaoke pod.
I appreciate this was cut&pasted from the bar's own website, but does that not sound just a bit fucking condescending?

Not 'arf. I have little patience for stupid rules and even less for ones expressed like that.

Best to turn up in trainers with the biggest Nike swoosh you can find, jeans torn to shreds, and a football strip.

Sharm is a strong candidate for where we'd go next. We were speaking to a fairly experienced diver on our trip and he highly recommended it.

I wouldn't mind having a go at diving in this country, as it's definitely a change of environment and a different experience. It seems a lot cheaper and more enjoyable to learn abroad in a warm country, though. This taster session cost me, I think, £40. That was for being picked up from my hotel, a whole day's boat trip with unlimited opportunity for snorkelling, lunch, and an hour under the water with an instructor. I dread to think what that would cost here, and it certainly wouldn't be in Mediterranean conditions!

I'm envious of you for going away. I'm absolutely gutted about coming home — I hate this country.

Which camera do you have, and how much was it? I'd think about picking up a semi-decent underwater camera if I ever picked diving up more seriously. Housing for my current camera is quite disgustingly expensive.

I went to Hurgarda a couple of years ago, I would highly recommend that too, it's just a little further south than Sharm.

To be fair - everything is cheaper in Egypt! :P I did my try dive in this country a few years ago and that was £15, then I did an assisted dive (before qualification) and I think that was about £40ish, I dread to think what they might be now. That was in Cornawall, and thinking back, I really enjoyed the dive, I think my experiences in this country have been somewhat clouded by diving at Stoney Cove, I'm just not a bit fan of the venue, I always seem to get crappy visability. Not something to worry about in the Red Sea for sure!

I've got a Canon Digital Ixus 750, I bought it for my uni photography module really, the fact that I could get a waterproof housing for it was a bonus. I think I paid about £175 for my camera and the housing was about £85, but I had some Amazon vouchers off my dad so it only ended up cosing me about £25.

If you find your nearest dive centre, they often have some good deals in. I was really hoping to do my photography speciality while out there this time, unfortunately events have conspired that I don't have the funds. :(

Oh, while I remember, there's a dive show on at the NEC in November, I couldn't go last year due to being in the US, but I went the year before and there were some real bargains to be had - well worth saving up for. :)

(Mods feel free to split these posts out into a diving thread. :) )

I actually paid £88, I bought it from a store because I wanted to try them all out. If I'd have known it was that much cheaper and with free delivery then I'd have just gone home and ordered it :(

See, I'd pay £88 in-store to avoid having to wait in for a courier (or have enormous boxes delivered to work and then struggle to carry them to my car).

The same as mine except I paid 20 quid more to get the version with the White piping that makes it look like a cast off from the Scorpio flight deck. That is a good thing.

Chinny have you opened a shop? Does it have Amstrad computers displayed in the window?

There's a shop in Perth which is purportedly a printer cartridge refilling place. The windows are full of empty toner boxes, dust and dead bees, and they never seem to have any cartridges on the shelves. The guy behind the counter looks a bit annoyed if you go in because he's busy editing videos on his macbook pro, but you can win him over with talk of firewire and glossy screens and suchlike. It won't get you an ink cartridge mind you.

That makes them the same as all other British customer service staff. Is the beard meant to be the unique selling point?

I only just found out that BBC iPlayer lets you download programmes in WMV format so they can be played through a 360. I assume everyone else already knew this but none of you told me, twats.

What? Does it?
So iplayer-dl is dead, effectively?

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs X

Go to a programme page and look for the "more downloads" link at bottom right (doesn't appear in Chrome for some reason). You can then download a WMV that you need to play once in Media Player to acquire some sort of licence and then it will stream to any extender device such as a 360.

To test this I just downloaded the first programme that I saw which happened to be Dragon's Den. It all works but has anyone seen the new opening credits to Dragon's Den? They have them all stood in front of an abandoned warehouse with a really curious heat haze video effect behind each one of them that makes them look exactly as though they are all constantly gushing out enormous farts at hundreds of degrees centigrade.

Instead of faffing around downloading iplayer stuff onto a 360, you could just watch it streamed on a Wii.

Assuming you don't mind watching things in low frame rate ultra-low res, of course. It's fine for QI and that, though.
