I was looking at getting an ASUS GTX460 1GB graphics card, but then I noticed it was PCI Express 2.0. I have a P5KC motherboard and the specs doesn't mention anything but PCIx1 and PCIx16, so I assume this means that this 2.0 business wasn't invented yet.

Will I be able to use that graphics card? Or would I have to change the motherboard? If so, what should I get, and would I be able to move to CPU?

Helpz!

Yes.

PCIE 2.0 is about as wank as 16x PCIE slots DDR3 and other stupid fucking inventions that make utterly no difference whatsoever.

I'm quoting this for future reference, and so I can find it later Wedding Bells Ahoy!

Card installed, runs fine. It was a matter of millimeters to fit it behind/between the harddisks, though.

Installing the newest drivers from nvidia in Ubuntu was a nail biting affair, as always, but it is necessary with the GTX 460. It works fine.

Next up: Reinstall Windows XP, as my installation seems to be fucked up (not because of the card, it happened some time ago). Reckon I'll need the weekend for this.

Some time in the future: Get Windows 7.

Quote what you like. I'm still running DDR2 on a two year old motherboard design with cards I have had nearly a year.

Don't run XP with that card. IIRC directx 11 isn't even available for XP. 7 addresses videocards in a way that Vista and XP doesn't. So if you want the full function from the card go with 7.
