Right, so yesterday it was all working fine. Then my 8 year old decided it would be great to stand the wii on it's side (without the foot thingy) instead of flat like we usually have it, and (separately) my 5 year old panicked when a message came up on the screen saying something about ejecting and he hit the reset button as he didn't know which one was eject (!).

Anyway, now it won't read any discs that we feed into it. The rest of the console is fine so I'm assuming it's something to do with the laser or lens?

Are cleaning kits actually any good? I heard they do more harm than good, but at the moment I'm not sure it could get any worse?

Has anyone heard of any other nice and simple solutions for fixing this? How are Nintendo for fixing stuff?

Any (sensible) advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Malc

Might not be much help, but worst case scenario, you could get a USB hard drive and boot all your games from that.

Since the disc drive doesn't work, it would mean backing them up over the internet, or borrowing another Wii to rip them all.

Has anyone linked to sensible instructions for doing that?

My Wii is being sulky about reading disks, you can hear it struggling to read again and again as the intro to MadWorld stutters away. The Nintendo out-of-warranty repair service is a flat £30/£60 fee (ish), buy I can't remember how they decide which one they charge you. Something to do with whether or not the fault is deemed to be wear and tear or from misuse I think.

I'm on my third Wii due to disc read errors and I don't use it that much. I got constant whirling with a loud clicking and an audio beep from the drive. If it keeps doing that then it needs sending back.

It took me about 10 seconds to work out who you were. You've changed your avatar!

Yes, but there's a few Craigs on here, and he uses a different moniker on Xbox Live. So it took me a few seconds to work it out.

Thankfully, my own Wii's been the most reliable disc-based console I've ever owned. And I've had it since launch and I'm probably a 'heavy' user compared to most people. I realise that I'm tempting fate by writing that, however. ;)

Mine gets a good thrashing from the kids (not so much from me these days for shame)

Not any more mind. :(
