Right: I have to attend a birthday party in Buxton (70s and 80s glam rock is the dreess code). Buxton is, by a route I have devised, 53 miles away from where I live. I think it is pretty feasible to get MrsA to drive there and I'll ride and meet her at her parents' house. There are a couple of problems with this idea, though.

Problem number one is "Can MaliA ride 50 miles?"

I did 31 last week, going up over the hills around Ilkley Moor (see Strava) and felt OK at the end of that. I think that if I take food with me I'll be OK, as I'm pretty poor at this "nutrional prep" stuff. Water is a concern, as I tend to drink loads of it, about a bottle every 90 minutes. I'm not sure what I can do about that, except take some cash and buy some along the way.

Problem 2 "Holme Moss"

Fuck me it's a big hill. Ever since I first drove over it, I've wanted to ride over it. I think it's worth a go, don't you?

i'm tempted to try. I can always get in a cab if it goes titsup. Like Millar.

Chap doors or get shop/innkeepers to fill your bottle while you're buying sustenance.

Also, ye can get tenner camelbak style rucksacks fae The Tescos that hold 1.5l of water & have enough space for the essentials.

I'd quite like to ride round Silverstone... once. No sure I could stomach ~6 hours round the same mile wide track. Even SITS or the R24 don't massively appeal & I like that kind of dirty twisty tight stuff.

You doing it for charidee or just Teh LOLZ?

When I do my long rides in the Summer I take a rucksack with some snacks and a isotonic sport drink in it. I may also put sport powder in the water bottle.

A couple of years back I was flagging badly and stopped at a bakers and had an iced bun which worked a treat.

You can also buy these horrible gel things to eat which do actually work when you are flagging towards the end.

I went out on the mountain bike after wirk today. It was lovely and warm. The rear wheel kept moving though, which was a pain, the qr must have been slipping. Anywas, i am trying really hard in the 16 mile loop to not use the inner chain ring. It is pretty tough going but it will get easier as i develop more power i suppose. First hill nigh on killed me, mind, that heart about to exit body through mouth effort. Out again tomorrow as 30 hours in 16 days and i am already behind.

Welcome back.

Out of interest I assume you are also slower on the mountain bike by about 25%? Otherwise I'm doing something wrong when I get overtaken by old men in lycra on their mountain bikes who overtake me with no effort. Lycra wankers.

The mtb is geared 42-11 on 2.2 inch tyres and the road bike is 50-11 with 23mm tyres. 25% sounds about right. It is hard to compate but i could take the mtb around a road loop i have done i guess. I do not use a speedo or anything on the bike so it is hard to tell. Strava data suggests 25% but terrain is very different. I do not really ride the mtb on the road.

Post subject:  Re: Bikes

Graphs showing speed and elevation on the mtb and the road. or "How slow can MaliA be?". it's the closest I can get to a comparison, MTB ride is 2 hours, and road ride is two and a half. The final 5 miles are along the road on the road graph, and seems to average about 17mph along the almost flat, and the canal towpath at the begining of the mtb ride which is less, although that segment is too short to really get an idea, but seems to be about 13 mph?

You should get some of those Commuting Chaps to go with it :DD :spew:

Bike stand is surprisingly useful, made my life a ton easier. Top tip for the bouncy bike. Hang it by the nose of your saddle & let it balance itself rather than trying to clamp it.

Baws to Le Tour de Merde* ;) The mad bastard that won this year's Tour Divide rode it in 14.5 days**. Even more impressive when you know that the TD is off-road, unsupported & usually lonely.
http://road.cc/content/news/86560-mike- ... cial-title
*23 days to ride 2,115 miles. An average of 92 miles per day.
**14.5 days to ride 2,745 miles & climb 174,000ft. An average of 189 miles & 13,793ft per day!

There was a film about the race made a few years back, it's worth hunting down, pretty inspirational stuff.

My, it is warm out there. I went out on my bike and everytime I stood on the pedals it felt like I was going to faint*. I couldn't get enough water in me at all. And then the front tyre punctured in exactly the same way as the read did, splitting the carcass, so I changed it and hoped it would last as far as the railway station ( it didn't) and walked the rest of the way and called for the support vehicle. I shall be complaining a lot to the manufacturer. Good news is, when I did stand on the pedals and smashed the power through the back wheel, I stormed up a short, steep climb, so the mountain biking is working on the "get more power" side of things.

Remember how my bikes got stolen? Being as I haven't moved yet, buying another bike to put in the same bike rack doesn't seem like the bets idea in the world. However I don't have enough space in the flat to store a normal bike.

I think a folding bike that I can keep under the computer desk in the flat would be a good solution and this one looks pretty damn cool. Mrs T thinks it looks rubbish, and thinks all folding bikes look rubbish in fact. Who is correct?

I think it is a 1997 GT Tequesta. Anyway, it's red, 24 speeds, and fully rigid. And has rack mounts. I'll use it for commuting. £60 well spent.

So, um:

GT RTS
VooDoo HooDoo
Carrerra Virtuoso
GT Tequesta

Are all in one piece, there's a Proflex 854 somewhere, too, in bits. I need one more road bike, and one more mountain bike now., and that'll do for a bit.
