That's hardly the point. Origin stories are often part of huge movie franchises, for good reason - because films don't often provide a lot of backstory for their characters. How did this smuggler guy end up being in Mos Eisley right when Luke and Obi-Wan needed a ride? Why did he owe Jabba a load of money? What's the history of how he ended up with the most famous spaceship in sci-fi history? How come he has a giant orangutan buddy?

All of those questions mean that done right, there's a compelling film there.

I don't really agree, because, how can anything from Han Solo's previous life as a smuggler can top helping blow up the death star or fighting the empire on endor? Origin stories happen because studios always prefer to make movies about established characters than do anything new. Remember KOTOR 2? Great new characters and great writing. Why couldn't movie studios come up with something like that? That's a rhetorical question, we know why.

Rogue One was about something that happened before EP4. Not exactly something new. But I have to concede that it was much better than the written-by-commitee feel on The Force Awakens.

I haven't seen The Last Jedi yet.

KOTOR was also written about something that happened before Ep4.

I don't see your point, unless it's "I don't much like the films they're making, even though everyone else does"

Whilst I like all the new stuff, and will definitely watch Solo, I do agree that there’s a whole galaxy out there, and other stories set away from the main drag of the Skywalker Saga might breathe new life into the universe and tell a more interesting story.

Also, some origin stories can be good, but few live up to the promise, or are needed. I like mysteries and references to things we never need to know more than broad brush strokes about. See the prequels for some shitty backstory we didn’t need (and I like those films more than most).

But there’s a new trilogy planned doing just these things! I am more interested in seeing that than I am about what Boba Fett did between the prequel series and his ill-fated journey into the Sarlacc.

There's not just that galaxy either, they could do some stuff about things that happen a long time in the future in a galaxy far, far away.

Well quite. One origin story (unless you'd like to count the Death Star Plans origin story) in 13 films and a host of associated series is hardly self-indulgent.

I’d be tempted to bundle in the entire prequel trilogy as well, tbh.

I’m still cool with them doing more, like a cool Obi-Wan movie, but do also try new things, else we’ll run that well of nostalgia dry.

You could count the three films for Vader's origin story.

Quick shout out for 'GOOD TIME' which has just appeared on Netflix and I watched last night.

I'm still recovering from the flu so you get a lazy review.

It has that chap out of Twilight in it who is very good actor.

Quote:
'Good Time' is a prime example of what the cynical or the uninterested might dismiss as “feel-bad cinema” — low budget, kitchen-sink realism about unpleasant people in worse situations. It also happens to be one of the most uncompromising movies I’ve seen all year: vibrant and desperate and alive, it’s a work hanging on by its fingernails. If you lament the loss of that gutter ferocity with which filmmakers like Martin Scorsese once walked the Earth, brother, here’s your cinematic B-12 shot.

Films wot I watched:

Suburbicon: The Coen brothers/George Cloony mashup. It’s alright but surprisingly predictable. Normally, with these kinds of films, it’s the performances that keep you watching but there’s nothing here that elevates it above The Coen brothers previous films. It’s very middle of the road but entirely watchable.

Coco: The new Pixar one which is brilliant. The Day of the Dead stylings are fabulous, the characters are full of charm and wit and I loved the Mexicana music and slightly sinister story. This deserves to be watched. Mind you it got me thinking, I watch some anime stuff in my time and I’m surprised that the big studios stateside refuse to take a stab at something more mature.

Roman J. Israel, Esq: Denzil Washington’s oscar nod is ... bland. Denzil is ‘good,’ I suppose, insofar as he is a top-tier actor but his character is unlikeable. I wanted Denzil to give this emotional heart breaking performance but instead he’s this Sheldon Cooper-esq lawyer that I couldn’t warm to. We don’t actually get to see much ‘actoring’ as the plot pushes Denzil along from one contrivance to the next. When the big twist comes (which we see from a fucking county mile away as the director doesn’t like subtly) I wasn’t emotionally invested at all. I just didn’t care. Nah, it ain’t really worth your time.

I rewatched RAMBO FIRST BLOOD last night for the millionth time, it's such a fantastic film, and in many regards highlights why modern films are so shit and old films are so good. (Yes I appreciate that's a massive generalisation but it was the thought that crossed my mind as the opening scenes played out.)

Within 5 minutes it establishes character and context, we immediately sympathise with our protagonist and understand that the antagonist is not evil, but nonetheless is at odds with the goals of Rambo.

The opening escape and chase scene is a timeless action setpiece, and leads into a taut, beautifully paced and filmed mid-section, until Rambo returns to destroy the town that hurt him, before finally breaking down, and Stallone shows to my mind that he has some proper acting chops.

I've probably watched this film 20-25 times or more over the years, and can quite happily recite the entire script.

Do not confuse First Blood with the second and third films, which are awful. First Blood however remains a genuine classic.

I'm more getting at when people think of Rambo they perhaps think of First Blood Part Two as 'The Rambo Film', and think of Rambo films in general as being ridiculous and bombastic action films where Rambo destroys the world.

Whereas First Blood is altogether a more quiet and considered affair. Well, until Rambo destroys a small chunk of the world, but we have established MOTIVATION by this point.

EDIT - Oh and the 2008 Rambo film is amazeballs of course, but for very different reasons.

Black Panther! Really enjoyed that. Couple of post credits scenes, including one right at the end (as per, but in case you think you might be sitting there for nothing, as I often do). There's a general sense of joy, particularly from Lupita Nyong'o, who lights up the screen when she's on. Parts of it seemed to drag a bit, though that might be because it effectively created a sense of a different culture, so the pacing was just ...different.

Only one moment where they announced "The Black..." slowly enough that my brain autofilled in "Vegetable". I loved the fact that the cities of Wakanda looked so alive. Partly due to the advanced tech, but also because they weren't pasted in advertising. If you accept there's a general soft message of multiculturalism and that we're all brothers and sisters, this is a nice addition along the lines of 'this super advanced culture has moved beyond capitalism in some undefined and unexplained way.

The racial angle is what set this film apart from other slasher/revenge films of the kind, but it felt really tacked on because it made absolutely no sense.

Why did the armitages abducted only black people? One character (the art dealer) explained it, but it made no sense at all that explanation. So they are not racists, quite the opposite, if their grandparents decide to keep on living in the bodies of black people.

And why did the grandparents were working as house servants? Was this to cheat the main character or the audience? I'm sure it was the second, and this is one aspect of storytelling i really hate.

The racism is very very far from tacked on. The racism of the family is so ingrained that they only value black people for their physical attributes (throwback to slavery, much?), whether that is for sex, stamina or beauty. They take black people because they arrogantly assume that won't be missed. The grandparents aren't living as servants, but playing a part whilst the protagonist is there.

So... I think you missed the point a little

the casual racism until the "twist" was very well done and and script well written. It's only that it fell apart when the movie turned into a horror movie. I also thought about the "won't be missed" reason, but the US is also filled with impoverished whites (the whole "white/trailer thrash thing"), so why live the rest of their days as blacks if they're so racist?
