Atomic Blonde - wanted to like it, but other than marvelling at John Goodman's weight loss, it was Bourne without the charm.

That's damning with faint praise like.

Last night we watched London has fallen. I don't mind suspending my disbelief for a film but this was absolutely absurd. I'm not one to pick at plot holes but there was more holes than plots in this one.

Still, quite enjoyable.

Yes, I was a little disappointed with this. It looked great on the trailer, but didn't really deliver as much fun as I hoped for.

Just watched another Netflix Original, The Foreigner. Pretty good revenge film, in the vein of 'Man on Fire' or 'Taken', although at a slower pace, considering its Jackie Chan in his sixties.

I watched Bright last night and to be honest, I struggled with it. Orcs, Elves and Fairies have always been the stuff of children's books in my eyes so it took me most of the film to take it seriously. It didn't help when Mrs TheVision said the Orcs look like melons.

Also, I would have liked to have seen more of the Centaur. Am I to believe that he managed to get in his police uniform without anyone helping him? Now that would have been an entertaining film. The Centaur police man who can only get around in a horse box.

Yeah. With it being based around the IRA and Pierce Brosnan's character being not-very-loosely based on Gerry Adams, it's actually Jackie Chan's character that seems out of place, but then the book the film was based on was called The Chinaman, so at least he wasn't shoehorned into the role.

Post subject:  Re: The Movie topic

I thought the basic conceit of Bright was pretty good. The whole elves/orcs/some unknown thing in the past schtick was pretty cool. I liked the fact it wasn't Basil Exposition "The Lord Jeffdy Jeff came down upon them with his mighty sword and the five races of the realm and blah blah blah" and was largely just "so yeah, there are elves and orcs, on with the story". The race relations bit was a bit overdone, but it was nice to see elves as the bad guys Peatchett style.

I really liked some of the graffiti they had as scene setting - the "Selfie" one of an elf taking a selfie in front of an orc being beaten by a policeman made me grin.

The story was a bit meh, and, as I said, largely carried by Smith.

6.5/10 I reckon.

I watched two films (count em)!

War Horse. It’s about a horse! And war! It was brilliant but someone started cutting onions near me towards the end. Honest.

Cumberbatch out of 10.

Lucky Logan was t’other. It’s a hillbilly Oceans Eleven and was also brilliant. Pretty funny too with some good performances especially from a certain Dawson’s Creek favourite of mine. Recommended.

Katie out of 10.

I don’t know why I thought TV censors were a thing of the past. I’ve been watching Spectre on ITV - the violence has been heavily censored and it’s irritating the bloody piss out of me. Just. Show. The. Sodding. Movie. As far as I remember the violence wasn’t even that bad. Certainly nothing out of the ordinary just your usual neck snapping mcguffins that everyone wouldn’t offend granny.

If only there were other ways to watch a movie than with bits cut out and lots of advert breaks.

I didn't know watching films on normal telly was still a thing that happened. Or normal telly, for that matter.

I remembered something else interesting about Elle this morning. As I mentioned, the lead character is the head of a games studio. Weirdly though, in the film, they're not developing a fictional game; they were working on the new Styx game which releases today. It's an odd thing to do because (a) the game they're working on has no real impact on the narrative so could've easily just been made something generic for the sake of the film and (b) the film's narrative does not speak well of a few of the developer characters so it's not like it paints the real life studio in a positive light. Also, y'know, violent and twisted rape revenge story: not exactly your usual fluffy cross-promotion type of thing. I do really wonder why the real life Cyanide Studio went for this deal at all.

I watched this yesterday and I thought this aspect was odd. I told Mrs Fop I thought Stix looked like it was based on a game that actually exists. I said I even had it on the PS4 as part of PS+.

And then the tentacles came out.

And now she thinks that's what I do with my time on the Playstation.

Thanks Verhoeven, thanks a lot.

Elle. That was great stuff indeed.

Don't know how much Styx benefited from being prominently featured on it, but the film felt definitely more authentic for having a real videogame, and not some bullshit made up stuff with mid-90's pre-rendered graphics and early 80's sound effects like usually we see in movies.

I’ve watched Jumanji.

It’s utter trash. Jack Black was so bad I’d almost feel sorry for him if he wasn’t being paid millions. Kevin Hart is a Poundland Chris Rock who should have been forced back to his backcatelog of straight-to-DVD movies. The Rock is serviceable. Karen Gillan is utterly beguiling but doesn’t have any good lines. The camera loves her behind. So do I.

2 out of 10, for each of Karen Gillan’s bum cheeks.

I liked Jumanji! Thought Jack Black played his part well - not that it's subtle or anything, but good. Made me laugh. Only thing I found annoying was casting Kiwi Rhys Darby as an Englishman. He has a good stab at the accent, then the Kiwi I's snick through, yis they do. Pointless.

Kevin Hart is fucking awful. That's not a comment on anything except Kevin Hart. And the morons that keep casting him in stuff. Every time he opens his stupid squeaky little mouth I want to find him and murder him.

The rest of Jumanji was pretty awesome. Bearing in mind that anything which mixes the concepts of 'American' and 'comedy' is already on my shit list even conceptually. It worked; it just did. Talented cast and good script.

Yeah, I liked Jumanji 2. Kevin Hart was a bit annoying, but not as much as he usually is. It's only the third Jack Black film I've seen where he doesn't annoy the piss out of me. Gillan was entertaining enough, and The Rock just smashed it as he always does. Particularly the smouldering intensity.

My only nitpick is that
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
going by what was presented to us, the entire of the third act was unnecessary - they literally just had a helicopter and now needed to get to the top of a tall statue, yet decided to go through the whole final task sort of thing. If they'd put in a line about how it had run out of fuel or was damaged or something that'd be better.

That said, video games aren't shy of putting arbitrary bullshit restrictions on you like that, and it's riffing off video games, so whatever.

Watched the original Jumanji on Friday night. Have never seen it before. Man, some of the CGI/puppetry really doesn't age well - particularly the spiders, which were just fucking comical. Perhaps that was the point.
