Watched the first 10 minutes of the new IT film last night, it covered the scene where Georgie meets Pennywise in the drain with his paper boat. ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view! So far looks to be good! |

Watched 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe' on Netflix last night. The description of it was deliberately vague. ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view! A 1 on the Craster scale even from just within the Netflix app without even watching the film. |

Rather enjoyed the Will Smith film, 'Bright' on Netflix, although it felt like a mix of End of Watch, Alien Nation and Warcraft. There are stormtrooper-levels of bad guy shooting though. |

Bright was directed by David Ayer, who directed End of Watch. I very much liked End Of Watch too, I will watch Bright soon. |

Bright’s reviews have been incredibly bad. And the trailer looked bad. And I say this as someone who played Shadowrun for many years, so I’m down with urban fantasy. |

The Guardian gave it 3/5, by all accounts they tried to cram too much into not enough running time. Since it's on Netflix I'll give it a watch, I like Will Smith anyway. |

From what I’ve read, the reviews seem to go from awful to decent romp. Apparently the original screenplay was meant to be good but hasn’t translated so well. But then there are a load of sexual assault allegations coming out about the writer anyway, so ugh. |

Post subject: | Re: The Movie topic |
I'd also say that the writer has a habit of saying that they didn't do his screenplay justice for two previous movies (American Ultra and Victor Frankenstein). Obviously a lot of this goes on with making movies, where the final work is only loosely based on the screenplay, but it's pretty telling that very few writers air this concern publicly before a movie comes out. Closest other recent example I can think of is Fantastic Four where director Josh Trank disowned the movie a few days before release, and ironically Max Landis & Josh Trank both worked together on the somehow excellent Chronicle. I've never written a screenplay, but I'd imagine a big part of the skill is to balance giving the studio what they want with telling an interesting story. Reminds me of what Scorsese says. Studios can now do anything they want with modern technology, and the skill a good filmmaker needs is to navigate the studio system effectively enough to be able to tell a personal story. |

All that’s true, though it was other people mentioning the screenplay quality, as Landis hasn’t posted on Twitter since he was outed as a sexual assaulting dipshit. |

I'd say light spoilers. They aren't going out of their way to spoil it or anything, but they do discuss certain scenes and plot details. Certainly didn't feel to me like it would lessened viewing the movie, it's more just an interesting discussion of different ways to handle themes in certain movies. |

Last night we watched London has fallen. I don't mind suspending my disbelief for a film but this was absolutely absurd. I'm not one to pick at plot holes but there was more holes than plots in this one. Still, quite enjoyable. |

Just watched another Netflix Original, The Foreigner. Pretty good revenge film, in the vein of 'Man on Fire' or 'Taken', although at a slower pace, considering its Jackie Chan in his sixties. |

I watched Bright last night and to be honest, I struggled with it. Orcs, Elves and Fairies have always been the stuff of children's books in my eyes so it took me most of the film to take it seriously. It didn't help when Mrs TheVision said the Orcs look like melons. Also, I would have liked to have seen more of the Centaur. Am I to believe that he managed to get in his police uniform without anyone helping him? Now that would have been an entertaining film. The Centaur police man who can only get around in a horse box. |

Cras wrote: In Ireland, right? Odd choice, I thought Yeah. With it being based around the IRA and Pierce Brosnan's character being not-very-loosely based on Gerry Adams, it's actually Jackie Chan's character that seems out of place, but then the book the film was based on was called The Chinaman, so at least he wasn't shoehorned into the role. |

Post subject: | Re: The Movie topic |
I thought the basic conceit of Bright was pretty good. The whole elves/orcs/some unknown thing in the past schtick was pretty cool. I liked the fact it wasn't Basil Exposition "The Lord Jeffdy Jeff came down upon them with his mighty sword and the five races of the realm and blah blah blah" and was largely just "so yeah, there are elves and orcs, on with the story". The race relations bit was a bit overdone, but it was nice to see elves as the bad guys Peatchett style. I really liked some of the graffiti they had as scene setting - the "Selfie" one of an elf taking a selfie in front of an orc being beaten by a policeman made me grin. The story was a bit meh, and, as I said, largely carried by Smith. 6.5/10 I reckon. |

I watched two films (count em)! War Horse. It’s about a horse! And war! It was brilliant but someone started cutting onions near me towards the end. Honest. Cumberbatch out of 10. Lucky Logan was t’other. It’s a hillbilly Oceans Eleven and was also brilliant. Pretty funny too with some good performances especially from a certain Dawson’s Creek favourite of mine. Recommended. Katie out of 10. |

I don’t know why I thought TV censors were a thing of the past. I’ve been watching Spectre on ITV - the violence has been heavily censored and it’s irritating the bloody piss out of me. Just. Show. The. Sodding. Movie. As far as I remember the violence wasn’t even that bad. Certainly nothing out of the ordinary just your usual neck snapping mcguffins that everyone wouldn’t offend granny. |
