Is this likely to be overly problematic for someone who has never read the books and has no intention of reading the books?

Not at all, because of a specific reason.

Wibbly wobbly multiverse

It did cross my mind after I posted. I thought it was perhaps to do with the the little statuette rather than the picture at first.

Given the nature of the books the film is going to have to be chock full of this stuff.

Post subject:  Re: The Movie topic

On subsequent viewings I'm starting to think this looks a bit too "generic action movie".

For example:
All the clothes are flawless
Jake seems to convince Roland that he has to get to TDT. What?
The dialogue is pretty shit (apart from the bit at the end, which is lifted straight from the books)
It's not a western

I'm going to remain optimistic however, and hope this is a trailer for the non-readers.

I'm cautiously optimistic. None of the other characters show in the trailer at all apart from the main three.

Dennis Haysbert is Stephen Deschain, and according to IMDB, Susan Delgado will feature in the film too (might be her in the trailer), so that's spanning plot points from the first four books at least.

I'd love them to get a proper crossover with the new IT movie in there as well.

Aye, it was total fucking gash. And, again, I'm not judging it against the original but just as a standalone film. The bits they showed in the trailer looked lovely and interesting but the overall design was just 'generic futuristic bollocks'. Nonsense.

Yeah, for sure. But I was relatively happy to just watch the participants ramble around and talk shit at each other because they were pretty much all so charming. I mean shit; anything with Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt and Vincent D'onofrio is going to have to struggle really hard to not be really watchable.

I watched Hostel Part III for a bit last night cause someone reminded me of Hostel. It was a bit shit so I turned it off and not because of the whole torture porn business, because it's terribly comical for some unknown reason. Someone gets killed by cockroaches, for example.

Half way through Logan- I'm not entirely sure what the fuck is going on, but Jesus it's good. Patrick Stewart in particular is giving a fantastic performance, but the three protagonists work really well together. Even Stephen Marchant is not annoying.

Yeah, I was worried he's be too 'Stephen Merchant' for it but he hits the precise right balance of sarcastic and miserable.

Last night I watched 'MANCHESTER BY THE SEA', which is summarised thusly by Rotten Tomatoes:

Quote:
After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.

I'm going to be mega-lazy and just link off to James Berardinelli's (very positive) review because I need to start getting stuff ready for when Jnr gets back from school, save to say that this is a wonderful and deeply moving film, as strong an analysis of crippling grief and trauma as I think I've seen committed to film, with some toweringly good performances and a scene towards the end that is devastatingly upsetting but also in its own way cathartic and perhaps the first step towards healing.

I should also note it's not some sort of relentless grinding miserabilist experience, there's a lot of love and humour in here.

Just felt like it spent a lot of the film building towards "What was the tragedy that lead towards this", but then I wasn't really convinced or invested in the characters when the reveal actually happened.

See now I'd read the film's Wiki article before watching it, specifically because I find that these sorts of narratives are often stronger without pieces of the puzzle missing. (Obviously just watching the film twice would have the same effect, but I think my way is more efficient.)

As such, right from the very first frames I knew exactly what had taken this man to the place we find him in and was able to contextualise everything on screen, and when the 'reveal' came it still had a huge impact.

Might not be the right approach for everyone but from reading the reviews, all of which mentioned the 'reveal' without saying what it was (even the Rotten Tomatoes summary copied and pasted above alludes to it), I knew it was the kind of film where I'd be a lot better off just knowing the whole story upfront.

Hmm I wasn't aware of these at all, although having had a quick Google they are allegations and not proven?

Then again, I'll still watch films with Mel Gibson in them because I think he's a mesmerisingly good actor, despite clearly being a pretty fucking awful person.
