We watched the Robocop remake last night. I wasn't expecting much, and it lived up to my expectations.

I watched 'THE GUARD' last night which I've been meaning to watch for ages but never quite got around to it, even though it's by the same guy as who did the superb Calvary and also stars Brendan Gleeson.

Anyway it's fantastic, hard to say if it's 'better' than Calvary or not but it's certainly as well made and fascinating.

Just don't be put off by the awful marketing materials and posters (which subconsciously is what was happening to me with putting off watching it for so long, I think), which make it look like some sort of wacky mismatched slapstick buddy police comedy.

I'll go 907/1000 for this one.

I thought it was surprisingly 'pretty good', in fact a quick search reveals I gave it 8/10 - viewtopic.php?p=845772#p845772

I think the trick is not to think of it as a 'Robocop' film or a remake or anything else, and let it stand on its own.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2. Was just awesome.

Great sound track. Can't wait to see it again

I forget what it's called, but the The Guard and Calvary director did a great short film that's on YouTube too.

Went to see GotG2 last night. Terrible.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Chris Pratt basically doesn't do anything for the entire film except make the odd wisecrack and look dumbstruck.
Gamora has a couple of decent scenes but nothing amazing.
Drax is basically the second best part of the film, he gets more decent lines than anyone.
Rocket is good enough, but is the cause of some of the worst parts of the film happening.
Groot - may as well not be in the movie.

The Sovereign sideplot is utterly pointless, you could remove that entirely and it wouldn't change anything about the movie.
The Ego plot is good, up to the point that he threatens the whole universe and they have to stop it - I've raised this complaint about Marvel movies before, why do they always have to have cataclysmic consequences, just focus on a small, personal plot.

I wasn't hugely keen on the first movie, but this one basically just seemed to be an excuse to get the VFX guys working overtime. Plot hangs on by a thread, barely any acting on display (Karen Gillan as Nebula is probably the highlight, acting wise) but OOH LOOK PRETTY CGI.

Yawn.

I really enjoyed it, for the reasons you stated.

The GotG should be saving the galaxy. That is there job.

I know there are only so many times a city can be blown up in the avengers films

GotG 2. Liked it, enjoyed it, didn't love it. Not bad. They just about get away with having Stallone in it, even, at least till his very final scene. Having tears come out of the middle of Pratt's eyes is really weird - right there, on a huge screen, you've got tears down the middle of your eye. Do the tear-making drops not work on the corners of his eyes? Looks bizarre.

Not the most important thing about it, but I don't understand how they can leave something so odd in a huge film like that, when they are doing a close up on his face. Otherwise, though, it made me laugh. Pretty sure I was in an audience of imbeciles, who responded like automata every time their buttons were pushed - cute animals on screen, quick, go 'ahhh!', but even that wasn't completely annoying.

I really enjoyed GotG2. Taken overall I'm not sure I would say it was better than the first film because there's something about the over-arching Ego plot that was annoying me but it sure was entertaining and without a doubt one of the funniest films I've ever seen; proper laugh out loud stuff all the way through.

I finally got round to seeing the first Guardians of the Galaxy film (last week).

Nothing new to add, most people know it already I'm sure - but it was a really good film, thoroughly enjoyable.

Batista was surprisingly....capable. Although the majority of the time I see wrestlers in out-of-the-ring fights, it just seems jarring. I'm not quite sure I can really put my finger on why, but it might be something to do with the way they move.

Yeah, we laughed our way through it too. I wasn't as keen on the soundtrack this time though, probably because I only knew a couple of songs from it.

I loved baby Groot too, particularly how he went through his age stages. :D

I think Dead was one of my favorites in this one though.

Five scenes at the end for those that haven't seen it yet.

It is one thing that annoys me with the Marvel films is all the extra stuff in and after the credits. I only saw 3.. dammit

I was ready to be angry because the reloading bit at the beginning is just stupid (how he does it around 2 minutes in seems more like what was described in the books) but holy shit that looks good.

It has the potential to be good, but don't see how they're going to cram in the entire story into one film without leaving too much out or changing it completely.

Yeah, this looks like a somewhat changed story - I don't recall Roland being on Earth at any point, other than very briefly (?) but it's a while since I read the books.

It really should be something that's set up as a 3 or 4 film set - you can't do the scope of the story in the books justice in one film. Still, on the plus side I assume this means we will be spared all of King's worst excesses of literary onanism in the books.

In massive gun battles? He was in that chap's office, I remember that. Then there was all that nonsense with Stephen King, but I vaguely recall Roland was ill for that. Or something.
Either way, the trailer doesn't seem to bear a great deal of resemblance to the books. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing of course.

I remember a shootout in the gun shop where he shot the gun out of the cop's hand.

It did cross my mind after I posted. I thought it was perhaps to do with the the little statuette rather than the picture at first.

Given the nature of the books the film is going to have to be chock full of this stuff.

On subsequent viewings I'm starting to think this looks a bit too "generic action movie".

For example:
All the clothes are flawless
Jake seems to convince Roland that he has to get to TDT. What?
The dialogue is pretty shit (apart from the bit at the end, which is lifted straight from the books)
It's not a western

I'm going to remain optimistic however, and hope this is a trailer for the non-readers.

I'm cautiously optimistic. None of the other characters show in the trailer at all apart from the main three.

Dennis Haysbert is Stephen Deschain, and according to IMDB, Susan Delgado will feature in the film too (might be her in the trailer), so that's spanning plot points from the first four books at least.

I'd love them to get a proper crossover with the new IT movie in there as well.

Talking of cowboy movies, the remake of The Magnificent 7 was somewhat disappointingly underwhelming.

I really enjoyed it but I've never seen the original and I appreciate it was mostly coasting on the strength of the cast.

I haven't seen the original either, it just seemed a little lacking in direction.

Aye, it was total fucking gash. And, again, I'm not judging it against the original but just as a standalone film. The bits they showed in the trailer looked lovely and interesting but the overall design was just 'generic futuristic bollocks'. Nonsense.

Yeah, for sure. But I was relatively happy to just watch the participants ramble around and talk shit at each other because they were pretty much all so charming. I mean shit; anything with Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt and Vincent D'onofrio is going to have to struggle really hard to not be really watchable.

I watched Hostel Part III for a bit last night cause someone reminded me of Hostel. It was a bit shit so I turned it off and not because of the whole torture porn business, because it's terribly comical for some unknown reason. Someone gets killed by cockroaches, for example.

Just got round to watching Kingsman, because I saw the trailer for the sequel and thought it looked good.

What a great fun movie!
