Thank fuck the new rating system has landed because five whole stars was far too much to cope with.

50/50 gets 786 thumbs up out of 1000.

Quite formulaic in a lot of ways but did it with enough heartfelt self-confidence and honesty to be a thoroughly decent watch without getting schmaltzy.

I watched it on the train with no idea what it was about.

I wasn't ready for it at all.

It was very well made but it almost played out like a 'beginner's guide to cancer', and as I'd imagine is the case for most folks my age, I've seen enough real cancer around me (although fortunately not actually in me, yet) to not need a film to take me through how it tends to pan out.

It's a bit like Rain Man, which used to be my favourite film, and then I tried to rewatch it a few years ago (by which point I was raising an autistic daughter) and was like, 'Hmmm, this seems rather banal now, I know all this, and the savant angle is overly twee'. I turned it off about halfway through, not because it was 'too painful', but because I was bored of watching Dustin Hoffman doing a really good turn as an autistic man.

That's not to say that both 50/50 and Rain Man aren't great films, back in 1988 Rain Man was one of the first mainstream media portrayals of autism and you could say was worthy on that basis alone, and 50/50 is a fairly solid, honest portrayal of what happens when someone is diagnosed with cancer (albeit someone from a well-heeled middle class lifestyle with seemingly amazing healthcare, I'm not quite sure how poor people would get on in that situation) - it did all the right things, in most of the right ways, but it didn't knock me sideways or anything.

I tell you what film I've never seen but was absolutely fascinating: Apollo 13.

I can't believe I've missed this but watching it in 2017 was no less interesting despite the advances in CGI (the CGI is a little noticeable in places y'see). In fact the most interesting thing about watching this was how The Martian, years later, aped the science bits and jingoistic rubbish for that make believe story. Oh, and how the dialogue was taken directly from the transcripts.

Hanks was as good as he ever is.

Bill Paxton was great (RIP).

Kevin Bacon had a great subdued performance too as the rookie thrown in at the last minute.

Kevin out of 10.

Yeah it's just a really great telling of an amazing sequence of real life events. I think that's why I found The Martian to be a bit of an odd one. It started off being really quite low key and realistic and very much reminded me of Apollo 13 except it all felt a bit weird because you knew it was all just totally made up, there wasn't the hook of knowing that it all actually happened. And so then it had nowhere to go except to build towards its crescendo of borderline nonsensical utter improbability.

I also watched that The Neon Demon after the rattle above about it. I didn't like it much but it made me want to read commentary about it after I'd finished.

While the scene with the sexy red head having a lovely lesbian lady orgasm atop a corpse seems to get a lot of attention not nearly enough attention is given to how large her areolas looked through her tight tops.

That's my review.

Apparently that corpse raping scene was improvised by the actress. She was just supposed to kiss the corpse :-)

Judging by your comment, I should watch that scene again

I found the opposite to be the case. I thought the trailer looked pretty good, but when he comes out with crappy lines like that, it just makes me cringe. I get that he'd pick up bits of stuff from his time on earth. I know it's all comic book stuff but it irks me when characters have lines that could be said by any character. I never read the comics though, so I don't know how much humour there is in them.

I dunno. I think the opposite, because the line is only there and is only funny because of who says it. The whole point of the line is that he picks up things from Earth but then uses them inappropriately. It would be less funny if said by others (though running it by in my mind, maybe Hawkeye or Iron Man could get away with it too, though in a cynical fashion).

That's fair enough. I think the humour in the Marvel films is rather lost on me - I'm the one sat stony-faced in the cinema while everyone cracks up. :) (The two scenes in the Avengers with Hulk punching Thor and battering Loki spring to mind)

Jem and I had a (short) conversation about this after visiting The Science Museum yesterday.

It occurred to me that you get films like Apollo 13, The Martian, Hidden Figures etc. but (and I could well be wrong) there's never been a "blockbuster" film made about Apollo 11 - arguably mankind's greatest achievement.

Even assuming that the Apollo 11 mission was executed flawlessly from start to finish with little drama, there must be enough there to get a decent 2 hour film out of, surely?

FUCKING LOGAN FUCKING FUCK.

Jesus H Christ, that was near perfect. Just fantastic powerful stuff...about a fucking superhero. Jesus, I just can't believe how great it was. Remember that trailer? It captured the spirit of that trailer throughout. Just...wow. I'm blown away. Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart...amazing.

Who knew that stupid superhero movies could birth something so great. All those shit movies were worth it just for this single film.

Mind you, if I had my way I'd have cut the film by 20 minutes and ended it when he wakes up from his nightmare and says "I hurt people." Just blackness straight after that sentence. 30 seconds of nothing and roll credits with the trailer music fading in slowly. I'm telling you THAT would have been the perfect film.

A massive Kevin out of 10.

Post subject:  Re: The Movie topic

Logan was fucking brilliant. Like you, I assumed the trailer would turn out to be totally unrepresentative but nope, they stayed the fucking course and went all in. It did go a tiny bit superhero-y flashy for the final section but even that was (relatively) restrained and relevant. Also: Steven Merchant was very good. I was worried he'd derail the tone of his scenes by being too, well, *him*, but his mix of bitter and sarcastic suited the character, and the whole film, brilliantly.

I watched Kingsman last night. I never fancied it but everyone here bumming it wore down my resolve and I'm glad I did

The 'Freebird' scene is fucking jawdropping. I'm glad I watched it just for that. All the fight scenes are great (as a wrestling saddo I enjoyed Eggsy suplexing a mook and then bridging out of it to shoot another).

As to the returning character... It was the least convincing movie death I've ever seen anyway. I half expected him to show up later in the same movie.

Yeah I didn't totally love everything about the movie, but it is mostly enjoyable.

I think they spent way too much time on training Eggsy, and some of the plot contrivances were a bit much to accept, but yeah that central action setpiece was phenomenal (although I'd have loved it if they presented it without any cuts, rather than with not very many cuts. It did a great job of masking the cuts in the middle of the action, so why even cut away at all?). I'd also say the elements dealing with class were a little heavy handed.

I don't love it as much as Kick-ass, but it is a good film.

Great, silly stuff. Sammy J is great, Hiddleston is forgettable, John Goodman is watchable as always. He's also lot a fair bit of weight recently, which can only be a god thing - he will be a genuine loss to acting when he dies, and it'd be great if it's a longer way off.

I do enjoy a bit of polynesian culture, and The Rock absolutely nailed the voice acting (it was so good, it took me a while to twig it was actually him). It was quite simplistic and trotted out a lot of seen-before tropes but overall, very good family fun. The design/animation of the major baddie was excellent. The whole cinema enjoyed hearing our 2 year old's little high pitched voice calling out 'that's a big TV'.

Yeah, the basic plot on this was as old as time, but I think the film was pretty awesome. The Rock's song was also excellent!

I've had to watch to the 'You're Welcome!' song on youtube a few times today - it's fantastic, and the art style during the song is amazing.

It's a good cast but there's a high chance it'll be shit-awful given that America seems to have entirely forgotten how to do comedy films in the last few years (unless your idea of comedy is brick-in-the-face lowest common denominator bullshit in which case this is a golden era).
