2 is basically 2 hours of the gun kata scene from Equilibrium. It's great.

Ah, Equilibrium. There was a move with an astounding ratio of very small numbers of very good bits to acres and acres of shite.

I sort-of internet know a guy who's interested in traditional, historical English bare-knuckle boxing. Most films that do it get the technicalities fairly wrong ( e.g. Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes ) but every now and then they do it correctly - apparently the boxing scene in Jane Austen pic Finding Jane is really pretty good. I like it when films really care about the details like that.

I'm not sure if that's an authentic combat thing or a thing that started in movies and graduated to real life gun fans because it looks cool.

Probably a bit of both. One of the first things you learn when training to use guns in combat (especially close quarters) is that you always point the gun where you're looking.

Holding the gun close to your chest makes this more natural as the arms then follow the body easier, so you just need to work on making sure you don't move your head independently too much.

I expect it helps with recoil management too.

(and looks fucking cool :P)

I finally got round to properly watching Warrior and cried all the way through but especially at the end because I am a massive cry-baby.

In John Wick 2

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I literally burst out laughing and applauded in the cinema at the bit where he pinned a guy down with a shotgun whilst he reloaded it.

Overall I think the first film is the better of the two, and the nightclub scene from the first is still the best action scene across both films. General quality of action scenes was slightly higher in the second one, but the nightclub scene was the peak for me.

Story stuff was better in the first too, second felt like it slightly overexplained stuff. In the first I was never distracted by asking questions about the mechanics of how the different organisations interact with each other.

I'd also say the first didn't end making me think "this needs a sequel", I was happy to get one, but I wasn't left thinking that things we unresolved. Whereas in the second....

They're both fantastic though. I hope the third (and the speculated "The Continental" TV series") happens.

Also I grew up round the corner from and went to school with The McShanes, and I'm very happy to see Ian doing so well for himself these days.

I just caught up with that gun stuff and Tom Cruise. That's pretty impressive. I like it when films go the extra mile with detail that you wouldn't normally notice. This is why I had a problem with Whiplash. I thought it was a great film but the end solo wasn't right. Most of what he was playing on screen didn't actually sync up with what you were hearing. I was really surprised about this as the attention to detail in the rest of the film was pretty much spot on.

As I had the afternoon off, I thought I'd chill out with a bit of Binding of Isaac and a film in the background. This time I went for the Metallica documentary 'Some Kind Of Monster', which was basically 2hrs 20m explaining how St. Anger ended up being a crap album. Ho hum.

Arrival. Really enjoyed this—it's really thought provoking. Beautiful acting and directing.

LA LA Land. Enjoyed this as well, though it is overhyped.

Survivor. On Netflix. It's meretricious nonsense with an appalling script. Milla Jovovitch plays a security analyst based in the US embassy in London. Pierce Brosnan plays the worlds foremost assassin. It has more stupid plot contrivances than any film I've seen in a long time and Brosnan's assassin is a surprisingly inept shot. Avoid.

I've watched Just Go with It.

Sandler is an eligible plastic surgeon bachelor that shags super models because he's such a player. Adam Sandler falls in love with Jennifer Anniston. Jen falls in love with him too.

I'm looking forward to the sequel where they explain how Lulu ended up being one of the most laughably bad albums of all time. And how James Hatfield became a Table.

Hidden Figures was brilliant. It made me angry, but it was brilliant. Really enjoyable character arc for the three main ladies & apparently most of the important bits were historically accurate.

Well, this is fantastic news: http://kotaku.com/hayao-miyazakis-retir ... 1792704177

Quote:
Back in 2013, Hayao Miyazaki retired from feature filmmaking, saying, “This time is for real.” Now, his long time producer says Miyazaki is coming out of retirement for another full-length movie.

John Wick 2 is good. I preferred the original though, in this one the level of unstoppability was a bit too high.

I know that's the point, but when your bad guy turns up with their head henchman and 3 nameless goons,
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
only for the main character to almost effortlessly slaughter another 30 goons that come out of nowhere, you wonder why they don't just give up and try and bomb him or something.

I got about thirty minutes into Arrival last night before I needed to go to sleep - seemed like a good start.

I read "wedding singer" as "wedding sniper" just then. Would have been a much better film.

Agreed on both counts.

John Wick 2 is decent but not as good as the first one I didn't think. Though I did love Peter Serafinowcz.

Also very good is Trainspotting 2. Despite not being about the life and times of a bunch of junkies it's slightly grimmer and more humourless than its predecessor, though it still has its moments for sure. Is Trainspotting 'A Thing' at all down south or do you guys not really care?
