Watched a couple of recent Netflix additions

The Fear of 13. Very good documentary about a bloke who was convicted of murder and spent 23 years on death row. The man himself is a very good storyteller.

Criminal. Face/Off style silly plot, but set in London, with some comically bad dialogue to boot.

Still fairly watchable though.

I watched that too. He was a good story teller and perhaps that was part of why I just didn't believe half of what he was saying.

2 films over the weekend.

1. Girl on the Train. I just finished the book, so was eager to see how a stream-of-consciousness, diary style book would translate to the screen. Turns out, the answer is narration. Lots of narration. I was actually quite impressed by how they managed to carry the story over with overlapping timelines and the like. Emily Blunt was superb as the lead, but I didn't like the casting on the male leads. Not very convincing. Also, the girl playing Megan looked so much like Jennifer Lawrence on muscle relaxants, I was frequently distracted. Overall, 728 bananas out of 1000.

2. Eddie the Eagle. I put this on late(ish) last night as my first choice was nearly 3 hours long I need my beauty sleep. Pretty enjoyable film. Quite small in scale though. Small cast, not much conflict. Not a lot of peril. Of course, it being based on a true story kinda ruins any dramatic tension. I did enjoy the performances though, especially Keith Allen as the badly conflicted, by always loving Dad. Taron Egerton seem to be destined to be the next Tom Hanks with his wonderfully wistful and witless portrayal of Edwards and HUGE JACKEDMAN did some good work in the John Candy In Cool Runnings role. Speaking of which, I loved the little throwaway reference to the Jamaican bobsled team. Calgary '88 truly was a magical time. Overall, a very enjoyable 699 bananas out of 1000.

I watched Dredd last night. I haven't seen it in ages but remember it being quite decent. But fuck me I can't remember it being quite so deliciously violent. Loved it. Again.

Especially when psychic gal submachine guns some poor saps face at close range during her escape I actually said "sheeeeeet" out loud to no one at all. That's the mark of some good violence.

It's a great film - I think I've watched it 4 or 5 times now. It really needs a sequel.

Why wouldn't I have been serious? There hasn't been a sequel and it doesn't currently sound like there will be one. :(

There is so much great material in the Judge Dredd comics, really a shame that they haven't found a story that translates to a profitable movie.

Maybe there will be a TV show which as was said on Movie Pilot might be a better medium, doubt we will see another film as the last one didn't make money.

A TV show sounds like a terrible idea especially since the awesome ultra violence of the last film (being the significant draw for me and most people who loved the film) wouldn't transfer over to the telly.

Surely the first and last ones would be in between Hemlock Grove and Sons of Anarchy if you'd done that?

Yes.
No.
Yes.
No.
Yes.
No.

A pattern emerges. Plus there's violence and then there's ultra violence. I've never heard of Hemlock grove though; is that any good? Like actually good?

Yes, Dredd was good. I quite like Karl Urban.

Also from that link, John Carter was a really enjoyable film.

He's good in Almost Human, and it has bonus Lyla Fucking Garrity.

If you watch them make sure to get a proper viewing order off the Internet!

Sadly that's the Tamil versions of the films.

The awesome ones are the Hindi versions. They're oddly utterly different films.

Went to see The Lego Batman Movie yesterday. It appeared to be aimed directly at me rather than the 10 year old accompanying me with it being both Lego and Batman and then containing a load of eighties references and nods to just about every bit of nerd culture going.

It was almost too much in that it's very busy and comes at you at a relentless pace. Clearly designed with repeat views in mind the sensory assault on the first viewing does make you feel like you're missing stuff but the gags and references you do get are all extremely well crafted. There's even a Pulp Fiction reference in there so it's clearly working on two levels.

I now want a "Harvard FOR POLICE" T-Shirt.

Saw T2 Trainspotting on Saturday.

I really enjoyed it. I like the nods to the previous. It was good to go on the journey with them, to discover what has happened in 20 years, and the focus on spud. I am glad i did not re-watch the original before seeing it, as it could have spoiled the journey.

The music was good, either samples or remixes of the original sound track

Watched The Big Short last night. I thought it did a tremendous job of explaining a complicated subject in an easy to digest manner, and Steve Carell's performance was outstanding - I've never seen him in a "straight man" role before. Christian Bale was alright I guess, but I was getting some serious Patrick Bateman vibes from his character.

As there is lot of chat between spud / Simon (sickboy) / Mark and Begby, discussing what has happened and flashbacks to the original.

For me, it was, i forgot this, that and other and was nice to remember.

Hardcore Henry is on netflix now. Tried to watch it but had to stop after 20mins. It's like watching someone else play a video game through Bubbles glasses.

Read the book of the same title by Michael Lewis. He's a former broker who has been writing very successfully for a couple of decades now. Makes the whole Collatoralized Debt Obligation very understandable and the book reads like a thriller.

Amusing fan theory I heard:

Bill and Ted and the princesses were travelling the time streams in the phone booth when they were attacked by bad mens. Bill and the princesses were killed, and the phone booth was destroyed. In the process of the booth going kerblammo, the time stream fractured, and we now have a multiverse full of differed Ted Logans, all very sad and very angry that their best friend and girlfriend are dead.

John Wick, John Constantine, Neo, and Jack Travern are all Ted.

And a cat. And a Tai Chi master. And Johnny Mnemonic. And a bomb disposal expert (Jack Tavern?).

And this guy:

Also, didn't they get married? Or just engaged? I'm struggling to remember the second one, which isn't good.

Because the Missus wants to see the new Resident Evil film in the cinema, we've been watching all the old ones ( because obviously otherwise we wouldn't be able to make sense of the plot ). I honestly can;t work out if they're great or dreadful, but to be honest I'm not really sure it matters. Zombies! Guns! Backflips! Explosions! Wentworth Miller! People who have been living in a besieged prison for 18 months yet are clean shaven and wear spotless and perfect clothes! Mutant Dogs getting their heads kicked off! They know what they're aiming for and they get it pretty much spot on. If only they scored higher on the Craster scale.

A friend of mine loves them all so I thought I'd give them a try last year. They're so all over the place, I forget how many films there are and in which order they're in. The first one was ok, but the rest are just unmemorable.

There's a small amount of InfoSec Twitter that crosses over into Gun Twitter and the latter is amazed by John Wick. Apparently Reeves's one handed press check when dual-wielding is outlandish.
