Resurrection is balls though. It had some pretty neat concepts (the Aliens being smart enough to escape from captivity by sacrificing each other, Ripley's horror at the "rejected" clones, the rag-tag bunch of pirates (was A:R before or after Firefly?) and even the Newborn at the end if it had been done slightly differently) but none of it hangs together well at all and the CGI is fucking appalling.

There was certainly some potential there. As I was watching it, it felt a bit Firefly-like and at that point I didn't know Joss Whedon had written the script till I saw it on IMDB after seeing this comment of his -

Quote:
"It wasn't a question of doing everything differently, although they changed the ending; it was mostly a matter of doing everything wrong. They said the lines but they said them all wrong. And they cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong they could possibly do. That's actually a fascinating lesson in filmmaking. Because everything they did reflects back to the script or looks like something from it. And people assume that if I hated it then they'd changed the script...but it wasn't so much they changed it, they executed it in such a ghastly fashion they rendered it unwatchable."

With regards to the effects in Alien 3, it was usually the scenes where the alien was on-screen with the actors that looked a bit off. I was hoping to find a decent example online, but only found this -

I completely agree that Alien 3 is a good movie, it's hated because it is a step down from the two prior entries in the series, but I think it's great.

I totally agree that despite being the end product being a disaster, Resurrection had plenty of good ideas and interesting concepts. It's a shame that the botched execution squandered it all.

Isn't the Director's Cut of Resurrection somewhat better?

Aye, all puppet work. For the scene where the Alien scurries off down a corridor all dog-like, they actually put an Alien mask on a dog and filmed that.

I don't remember much about the DC, not really sure you can polish a turd though ;)

A3 also gave us possibly the best "moment" in the entire series:

I find that the CG isn't bad, per se, but the compositing is awful. Thick black outlines, no environment mapping, no contrast matching.

In other words, lazy FX team.

From reading this post, the special edition sounds better than the theatrical version. The Director considers the theatrical version to be his version which is why the special edition isn't called the Director's Cut.

It was the special edition I saw last night anyway, so I think I'll be passing on the theatrical version. :)

Not a bad shout. Carrie Henn doesn't really "do much" in that scene though, whereas Sigourney Weaver really nails the fear.

Well, no - but she knows there's one about (can't she hear the motion tracker beeping if I remember rightly?) so I'd have thought she'd be a bit more frightened than she looks ;)

Yeah, she can clearly hear it. She survived as long as she did by staying quiet and calm, though, so that could be an excuse.

Girl can scream, though.

I agree entirely with this.

Do you know, I didn't really like it. It was just a bit boring. I liked the free-running stuff rather than the fight stuff, and found both the baddy and Cappie/NeoMurdock to be a bit crap.

It was a 90 minute gimmick, but the gimmick was a bit crap.

I dunno as a gimmick it worked ok as a three minute pop video, but I can't imagine watching 90 minutes of it.

I stick by what I said about it in that it's not necessarily a great film, I think you enjoy it in the same way that you enjoy a rollercoaster ride, but it stands up to about the same amount of critical scrutiny.

Wasn't it made by a load of crazy Russians? It's the type of film I would imagine crazy Russians to make.

Yeah I think it was some Russian dude who directed it. I've only seen the pop video he made first and rollercoaster seems a good analogy. Imagine being on one for an hour and a half.

And the yearly updates of Fifa/WWE games clearly sell well enough to make them worthwhile.

This, this can't continue can it? This horrendous lack of anything from Hollywood? I'm sick and bored of superhero movies now, and I'm reduced to rocking back and forth clutching tight my copy of Broadcast News, hungry for something entertaining AND intelligent.

Surely, surely there's got to be some sort of backlash eventually? Because I really can't see myself going to the cinema much at all the next few years.

You'll be pleased to hear that they're remaking splash with Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell, then.

Perhaps you'd like to see more things like The Godfather, The Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind, Psycho, or Ben Hur?

I saw a brilliant comment the other day about remaking loads of films like the Dirty Dozen with all female casts - varied actresses as appropriate, but the one constant would be to cast Chris Hemsworth as the ditzy male sidekick in every single film. Maximum trolling.
