Deadpool (who I suppose can probably just get away with straddling different studios continuities given his superpower of being aware of the medium he is appearing in) was entertaining enough, but it really did have a shit plot. It was entirely carried by the (excellent) humour and (above average) excessive violence, but it was a pretty weak story. The central romantic relationship was paper thin and badly told, and the villain had very little going on. I enjoyed it, but I hope they do a better job of delivering the full package with the sequel.

What bits do you disagree with?

It was a good movie, but the story and plot were legitimately bad.

Whilst I enjoyed Civil War, I think I'm getting a condition which I'm dubbing "Marvel humour fatigue" - the quippy one liners and jokes are starting to wear a little thin, now.

There's only so many times we can see Tony Stark being an egotistical self-centred git, when in each film he's in his character arc seems to send him closer to a point where he is humbled by all that's around him, but by the next film it's business as usual.

I thought after Avengers 1 (and in Iron Man 3) they were really going to play up the PTSD angle, and I thought it worked really well. But then, at the end of IM3 he claims to be a changed man, and then by the next film it's all back to normal.

I know they *have* to do that, but it's just starting to grate.

The point where you levelled a single criticism at the greatest film of all time. The plot had a deliberate comedy moment where Wade was sent to talk to a guy 'because it'll advance the plot, or something' - no film has ever had a better plot.

If you're going to start ranking Deadpool in there, you need to rank all the other Fox films. And then you'd probably have to do all the Sony ones too. This would be dull though.

I would have liked to have seen Demon In A Bottle at that point.

There are certainly parts where he's still doing his normal schtick but I was very struck by the scenes in the Civil War where he's trying to convince the others that some kind of regulation is needed; he was noticeably quieter and less dominant than usual--subdued and almost depressed seeming in places--which isn't a mood I think we've ever seen. During fights and when recruiting Spiderman we're back to nearly the usual Stark, but even then there's a slight sense of him playing the expected part while being slower with the quips and quicker with the anger. It's possible I was just looking for such things but by the end of the film I did get a sense of a Stark who's more frustrated with the world and for whom the whole 'hero' thing was massively losing it's shine. He pretty much admitted that he'd destroyed his relationship with Pepper due to his compulsion to try and fix what he sees as the results of his mistakes.

Vic & Bob's 'House of Fools' had already done that joke. Winningly.

They did sneaky references to the MCU though, such as the final fight being on (allegedly) a Helicarrier, and Hydra Bob being sort of in it.

So it's not actually MCU, but it's Deadpool, and he cares not for your rules.

I've also just realised that I'd love to see Larry David as a superhero in Tony Stark's shoes.

Minor spoilers:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
That bit in Civil War when he's emotionally devastated by the woman telling him about his (actually pretty tangential) role in the death of her son, I'd love to see that play out with Larry David.

Bitter woman: "He went there to build affordable housing. You dropped a city on his head."

Iron David: "That's very unfortunate. That's very sad. If I saw him I would have shouted something. You know, 'Get out of the way. City falling,' or something."

Bitter woman: "He tried to change the world, and you killed him."

Iron David: "I didn't kill him. I don't even know the guy! You say he was black? Because this wasn't a race thing. I have many black super-friends. Don't read anything into this."

Bitter Woman: "While you were out stopping the bad guys you didn't even think about anyone else!"

Iron David: "I distinctly did. I remember flying around and thinking, "Oh Gosh, I hope that city doesn't fall on anyone's head." What do you want me to do about it? What? Stop staring at me. How's this my problem?"

Bitter Woman: "You..."

Iron David: "I saved loads of people. I saved that guy with the comb-over and the kid and the uglier kid with the overbite and... and I saved loads of people! I filled a bus with them! Did you save anybody?"

Bitter Woman: "You're a bad man, Iron David..."

Iron David: "I'm not a bad man. You're a bad woman for trying to guilt a guy trying to do a good job. Yeah, you think on that. Laying an Elevator Guilt-Ambush on me. What, was I supposed to catch that city? I've lost all desire to finish this bagel now. You've ruined my lunch-break. Don't phone me. GOODBYE!"

Walks into elevator to comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm style music. Cut to Ted Danson as Captain America, being sickeningly decent.

It's meant to be the Helicarrier from A:A, I think. It has the old-style turbines.

I enjoyed it, and other than being about 15 minutes too long there wasn't much to dislike, but I didn't come out of it with the same "Wow" that I got from some of the Marvel Movies - The first Avengers and Guardians for example.

I'd never heard of this before but the description made it sound OK. It has Clare Grogan in it too. Then I remembered who Paul Ferris was as I'd seen a couple of his documentaries. Good film, think Scottish Rise of the footsoldier.

The airport scene in Civil War was so good.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
So many great lines and pieces of action.

Giant Ant Man!

Everything Spider-Man said!

Especially "You have the right to remain silent!"

Black Panther vs Hawkeye!

Ant Man!

"What's that voice?" ... "This is your conscience speaking!"

And my personal favourite line of the whole movie for some reason...

"Sorry. I thought it was a water truck!"

I forgot to mention, prior to seeing Civil War I had to sit through five trailers. EACH ONE OPENED WITH SAD PIANO KEY. Including the new Ghostbusters film, ostensibly a comedy. One of them used sad piano key and then immediately followed up with some BWAAAMs.

Hollywood, just stop it. If the Force Awakens trailer told you to jump off a cliff, would you do it? Huh?

Does anybody else here suffer a sort of loss-of-faith crisis when they hear audience members around them laughing at painfully unfunny bits in trailers, by the way?

Still, saw Jeff Goldblum on the big screen again. That's worth something.

I think the trailer for the new X-Men film look terrible, though I'd struggle to distil exactly what about it doesn't appeal to me. Well, apart from that one shot of Psylocke somersaulting towards the camera which just looks laughably stupid. There's just something utterly charmless about the whole thing.

It just seems very strange to me the direction they are going with the new one.

I thought Days of Future Past almost gave them a really clean break.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I think Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen have done a fantastic job in their respective roles, but I think they need to be retired and replaced completely by McAvoy and Fassbender.

Obviously the most marketable character in the film series is Wolverine, and for better or worse Hugh Jackman is Wolverine. Fortunately it's not too hard to come up with excuses for him being present at whatever point in time the story is occurring in.

They came pretty close to an ending that cleanly established Wolverine as one of the Xmen back in the McAvoy/Fassbender timeline, but sort of messed up the entire timeline by having a different version of Wolverine show up in the Stewart/McKellen timeline right at the end.

I assume with the new one they are abandoning that timeline, doing another story centered around McAvoy/Fassbender timeline, and coming up with another excuse for having Wolverine turn up. I was just irritated that they did a bad job of tying it up neatly when they could have done so very easily.

Now the part of my brain that is wondering exactly which version of Wolverine is supposed to be appearing in various other movies (I gather a third standalone Wolverine movie is planned, too), when they could have just left the Wolverine at the end of DOFP in the past, and let the entire rest of the cast from the prior movies just make a clean exit, and focus on other characters in the past, and recast when they need to.

I think about time travel in movies a little too much.

Civil War was alright.

Why wasn't it called Avengers 3?

Spider-Man looked a bit obviously CGI. Otherwise was pretty good.

VIP cinema seating is the shit (has a button to make the seat lean back/forwards, and a USB charging point build in to the armrest).

I haven't seen Civil War yet. Do they do that CGI-eyes thing on Spidey? I could forgive it on Deadpool, because Deadpool.

See, I thought that it did a really good job of being Cap 3, despite the cast.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The Cap/Bucky friendship is the axis that the film turns around, as it was in the second film and (of course) as was set up in the first.

However

As was my concern before it came out, it does rather make Cap the hero, which isn't really how Civil War was meant to go down

This is because

He is a goddamn hero!

As for not being Avengers, I agree with DocG as the central axis is Bucky/Cap, and more Falcon than other ancillary characters.

Had the Avengers name been used, there would likely have been internet snarks asking where Hulk and Thor were.
