Well, obviously that's far worse than repeatedly calling someone a fucking idiot for not wanting to watch a film.

Apart from I wasn't doing that.

Maybe if you're a good person (meaning you) then the movie plays out differently in terms of what you take out of it. But I know for damn sure that duck loads of people in the city, where I work, took it as an aspirational thing. Being the guy who's smart enough to manipulate others to get that rich and get that lifestyle? Amazing! Lose your friends and family and get fucked up on drugs? That's fine! Spend a bit of time in prison but are still a millionaire afterwards? Totally worth it!

It's likely a good film. If I saw it normally I'm almost sure I would like it. I'm just unable to take it like that now. It's a failing of mine, but I'll get too annoyed during it and it will upset me. Or if I don't, then I'll end up hating myself for other reasons.

So I'll give it a miss.

No.

But to get back to the subject at hand I would not need to see a controversial film by a really good director before deciding whether I could be bothered with it. However I certainly would need to see it before going into detail and telling people who had seen it stuff like this:
Curiosity wrote:
I've also not watched it, and won't, on the account that it is massively glorifying an absolute cunt of a man who has never shown any contrition and got away with living an incredible life with extremely limited punishment. This film in itself continues to allow him to make money at the expense of others. It's just laughing in the face of those whose lives he has ruined.

In a similar vein, I would find it difficult to watch a movie in which a real life murderer was the 'hero', if outside of the movie they continued to laugh it up and live the high life because of the killing they performed.

Or, in a more fiscal sense, a movie about the current government, if it showed them laughing at people dying due to their cuts and austerity measures, but they were the heroes.

They aren't the heroes, everyone else on here has said the same. If I thought that we were supposed to be admiring him, which is what Curiosity says here, then I would think it was well off and would have come away not liking it at all. But having actually seen the film I don't believe this is the point, at all. Indeed I think it's the exact fucking opposite of the point.

Well there's really no accounting for that, just like some people didn't realise Alf Garnett was meant to be awful, or someone might watch Hannibal and decide that being a serial killer looks like a fun thing to do.

You're the first person I know to have seen the film and taken from it that he didn't (some bad moments aside) have an amazing fucking time whilst screwing people over.

The trailer and reviews must really have misrepresented this movie. I didn't know it was a harrowing, grim take about how awful it is to be rich and popular by fucking everyone over.

The morality of the film has precisely fuck all to do with what sort of time he's having, it's about what kind of opinion the viewer is invited to make of it all. But I'm done arguing with you because you're acting like a fucking idiot.

Yeah, I know, but it still tarnishes it for me, especially given how Belfort ended up rich and largely unrepentant, so no matter that he's portrayed as a dick, he still ultimately has 'won' (depending on your rules, obv). The people who think like him and act like him and do see him as a hero (but all consider themselves as smarter, so don't believe the bad parts will happen to them) will sadly continue to be successful and run the country, and U guess I'm not in the right frame of mind to be seeing that.

Steve Jobs: does a decent job of not overhyping each product - not glossing over the mac's failure etc. - possibly at the expense of a story. I was still gripped, I'm just not sure why, I suppose the performances. The conceits they've used are Jobs' relationship with the daughter he denies, and product launches - we don't see the launches themselves, but the build up, which gives a chance for Jobs to meet Scully, or Woz, or whoever, and talk things out. On a small screen you might get distracted and lose interest, but I enjoyed it, if the ending seemed a bit arbitrary.

OK then I watched THE WOLF OF WALL STREET last and this really, really, isn't what the film is, or does.

I'm not going to labour through a point-by-point rebuttal (and others have already put the other side of the story quite adequately in the last few pages of this thread), so I'll limit myself to saying.

1) It's a superb film.
2) Jordan Belfort is absolutely not presented as a hero, nor is he glorified in any way. He is however given space to be a human being, albeit a deeply flawed one. He's basically a drug addict sociopath with what is ultimately an empty and unfulfilled life, and my takeaway from the film was that he didn't 'win' at all.

It's a similar story to Goodfellas in a lot of ways, with obvious parallels in the storytelling, and in a way it's up to the viewer to make their own mind up, Scorsese tells the story, he doesn't moralise and IMO that makes it more powerful.

It's a really good film, I wasn't intending to watch it all in one sitting as it was late when I started, but I had to get to the end once I'd started, even if that meant still watching it at 1am on a school night.

All the 'DOES IT GLORIFY A HORRIBLE MAN?' (Hint - No) stuff aside, it's a massively entertaining film which even at three hours long doesn't feel as if a minute is wasted.

9.5/10 - One of Scorsese's best.

Red Army: documentary about the Soviet Ice Hockey team, super dominant during the 80s. Not sure what the director's original thoughts were, but a promised 15 minutes with the captain at the time, Fetisov, turned into 18 hours over 3 days or so, and he wisely chose to hang the film on him. It's excellent, had me gripped. Short, too - 83 mins. I am disappointed that I didn't know how good they were, I could easily have been tuning in to whatever coverage there was of the 84 and 88 olympics. There's some extraordinary early footage - though whether there's some weird story there about some loon deciding to film as much of Fetisov's life as possible or something, I don't know. And the short bits of ice hockey are mesmeric - essentially, and perhaps counter-intuitively, the North American teams played brutal one-dimensional hockey, the Soviets, creative, free-thinking (albeit rooted in a team ethic) stuff.

I watched Youth the other day. Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel and others worry about age and what they've done with their lives. While it does lose it's way quite a bit nearer the end, the first two thirds is absolutely worth the price of entry. For that time it's structured almost like a series of sketches with each scene lasting no more than a couple of minutes and almost all of them being incredibly funny (in a very dry and subtle way). The plot and characters is developed through these 'sketches' so they're not stand-alone unrelated scenes or anything, but it seemed very noticeable to me that it wasn't put together like a normal film in that respect. The whole thing is also incredible to look at with each shot framed beautifully, although the alpine hotel setting would be very difficult to make look bad admittedly.

tl;dr: most very funny and beautiful looking, people should watch it.

This is on my list (and indeed my NAS), I'll be watching it in the near future I imagine.

Last night's film for me was BLACK MASS with your man Johnny Depp in it doing proper acting for a change instead of dressing up like a pirate.

It's a familiar gangster yarn in a lot of ways, elevated above the ranks of the average by a splendid cast, and it all looking and sounding very nice, superbly directed and filmed. Narratively speaking it's not fantastic, compressing too much real time (twenty years plus coda) into a two hour running time, this is one of those rare films that would have benefited from being longer IMO.

Still, a fine watch and a great film. And it has Juno Temple in it playing a prostitute. Although after KILLER JOE there's not much new to see there. I do like Juno Temple.

8.5/10 - Bald Johnny Depp.

Black Mass is the true(ish) story of Whitey Bulger, read a few books from people who were around at the time so doubt I'll bother with this as I know the story.

Whitey Bulger did a runner in 1994 when I assume this film ends and was only captured in 2011, he got life without parole at the age of 81.

3096 Days.

I really don't know why I seem to pick films that are difficult to watch but as difficult goes this one was impossible and did prove too much. At times I had to reach for the remote to forward past scenes of the nudity and rape of a very young girl. I actually felt sick at points of the film and the first thing I did this morning was do an IMDB check on the actress that plays Natascha. Thankfully she's well into her thirties but is sickeningly skinny.

Honestly if you thought London To Brighton was a tough watch then really don't watch this.

I only watched it all because I was desperate to see the nasty cunt get his comeuppance and he did, but it should have been far more graphic (he committed suicide by lying on a train track).

So yeah, just be warned that this really is a stomach turning film.
