It's fine for kids, nothing particularly gruesome in the film except for a bit of a protracted death for one of the minor characters in the film and a few jump scares. |

I was pretty shocked at the number of kids under 7 who were in the cinema to watch it on Sunday night. And then really not shocked at the number of them crying. Depends on how resilient your kids are to scary monsters chasing and eating people. The scene Gaz mentioned was the worst scene for me, it wasn't gory violence but it was a terrifying way to die. Younger kids would probably be less bothered about that, unless they're particularly empathetic. Have they seen the other Jurassic Park movies? This one is probably no more gruesome and probably less scary, in terms of peril, than Jurassic Park. I'd tend to wait with things like that and get it on DVD (or other media) to watch in the middle of the day with them. |

They've seen the first three films, and they love them, although there is a bit in #3 that I haven't let them watch (dead rotting corpse guy in the parachute). They're generally good at understanding that stuff isn't real. |

also keep in mind impact in the cinema vs TV at home I let Katie watch things at home (where I can turn the sound down or draw her attention to her sandwich etc or straight out skip bits) that I would never let her watch in a cinema (total immersion + loud and huge etc) but you know your kids so, trial watch sounds good

I watched Max Mad Road Fury last night. I think I have only just caught my breath. Moreso than Watchmen (and way more interesting) it seemed like a graphic novel made real. It felt like I was sat in the pages of a story that I couldn't escape from. I don't think I have flinched anywhere near as much in any movie ever. Felt like I attended an event rather than watched a film by the time I left. Awesome. |

There's a handful of really witty/smart/subversive moments in Jurassic World, but I didn't really care for it as a whole. It's a right old mess of a film, full of plotholes, poorly developed characters, ill thought out setpieces and really hamfisted callbacks to the original movie. Almost as if it has been in development hell for years, and the script has been handed around through dozens of writing teams, and had any life editted out of it. Worth a watch, but not anywhere near as impactful as the original. This is one instance where I think a reboot would have been a better idea than a sequel. Vincent D'Onofrio's performance was great though, as always. He's a really watchable actor. Highlights for me: ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view! |

Homefront - ex DEA Statham have moved to small town america after his wife died. His bullied daughter defends herself against the wrong bully which leads to bad guys from an old sting tracking down statham. Terribly dull for the most part apart from when Statham is on screen. Winona Rider is terrible in it and doesn't suit the bad guy trailer trash role she has here. One to avoid. Or at least all the bits that don't have statham in. |

The "spoiler" that John Connor is evil and is a machine? I don't know, but the trailer seemed to be that the film is standard action blockbuster fare. I'm not having high hopes for it, even though old Arnie vs young Arnie can be reason enough to watch it. |

Somehow, she'd not only not seen either film [1] but she knew so little about them that she had no idea Arnie was reprogrammed in T2. We reached the part in the arcade where the T800 grabs John and uses itself as a human shield against the T1000's bullets before she said "wait, WHAT?" My pet theory is that it was shot as a twist -- as you say, the film is carefully ambiguous up to that point -- but then early marketing material made it look like an off-putting retread sequel so they ended up broadcasting Arnie's reprogramming to get people in through the door. [1] There are only two Terminator movies. |

Well T2 was originally going to show the resistance raid on the factory and time machine, which would have very clearly show that Arnie was reporgrammed to be good this time round. That was dropped for budget reasons, but it did mean that up to the reveal in the movie it did leave the viewer to think that the T1000 was the "hero". |

Rewatched The Cabin in the Woods again at the weekend and it's still awesome. I also tried to watch We Need to Talk About Kevin and only made it through about half an hour. Not because it's a bad film or anything but it was just so utterly, brutally depressing that I couldn't stand it. |

Watched Orphans on Saturday, a tar-black comedy set in Glasgow, following four children as they grieve for their recently deceased mother. Sounds like great fun, doesn't it? Well it is. It features a handful of comic setpieces so painfully funny they knocked me sideways, in what for all intents and purposes is a pretty bleak film. Directed by Peter Mullan, I found it a much less troubling watch than, say Neds, which I found too over-wrought to particularly enjoy. Would highly recommend it. I don't think it reviewed brilliantly because it's a hard film to pigeonhole. Too funny for your gritty drama, but too dark to be a black comedy. Which is a shame, as it's great. IMDB-me Also, any scotch - what's the deal with the salutation "big man"? Felt like it could be used when threatening someone or greeting them. |

But I did enjoy the Minions, as disjointed as it sometimes felt. Would have been happy if it hadn't featured Scarlet Overkill or her husband Jon's Hamms at all, to be honest. Send the minions round the country with Michael's Keaton's character, Natural Born Killers style. |

Couple of recent ones from me: Alan Partridge Alpha Papa - I really liked this, not many true LOL moments but constantly engaging and funny. I was never a massive fan of Alan Partridge in that I wasn't a devotee of the programme or anything, but always found him amusing enough and like Steve Coogan. Aside from the comedy there's a decent story in here too and some nice human touches. Colm Meaney is always watchable too. Recommended. Sin City A Dame To Kill For - Technically speaking this should work as it's MORE SIN CITY and I loved the original, but somehow this manages to be rather dull. All the ingredients appear to be present and yet I frequently found myself rather bored. In fact I was so disengaged it took me a while to realise Bruce Willis was dead 'cause he died in the last one. Fuck me he phones it in these days. Only watched it 'cause it turned up on Netflix and I watch fuck all on there these days so wanted to feel like I was getting a bit of something out of my subscription costs. Not recommended. Under The Skin - I watched this again as I felt it warranted it. Unbelievably good, it's like 'proper art', and stuff. Some astoundingly touching and tender moments too, really makes you think. |
