This weekend I watched Straight to Video tripe Karate Warrior 2. It is utterly awful. If you ever have the opportunity to watch it, please do yourself a favour and don't. There is very little Karate and not much in the way of Warrior-ing. Just generally teenagers doing not much at all. Agony.

Saw the new Avengers film in three-deez at the local cinema last night.

It was good, I enjoyed it, but I wasn't blown away despite how hard it was obviously trying. I won't really go into detail and no spoilers but despite being quite a thrill-ride it was also a bit predictable; even though I had been trying not to see too many trailers I felt like I knew what was coming next.

There were a lot of really good bits and the GFX looked amazing as you would expect but somehow it just felt like overall it was less than the sum of its parts. I don't know if maybe it's because the first one was so exciting (and I went to see it twice at the cinema which is pretty unusual for me) but I come out of this one a little underwhelmed. Perhaps the ever increasing ramping up of action films has led to a kind of 'action-fatigue' for me.

Oh, and I think that films need to chill with the 'quippy one liner' quota, don't try to force so many laughs.

Overall, maybe too much is a bad thing after all, and that's not something I would have expected.

Saw Age of Ultron tonight and it was alright, I suppose. There was the odd flash of the excellence of the last one in the dialogue (the Whedonesque quips mostly) but the plot very often fell into disappointingly standard blockbuster incoherence and it definitely wasn't anywhere near as good as the previous film. Things I didn't expect:

them to actually kill off Quicksilver and that the post credit scene to be setting up for Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet. And I say the latter because the chat I've heard is that the next Avengers film will be based on the Civil War event which would make sense given that the seeds of that conflict between Iron Man and Captain America are already well sown. I suppose though they could just be setting up Thanos for the next Guardians of the Galaxy which would be a better fit; and killing off Quicksilver might be a way to minimise conflict with the X-Men film version if they ever want to bring that all together.

On a side note I felt the 3D was very good in that it added depth (yes, ha ha) to the world without ever once being gimmicky. I quite like modern 3d but generally I'm 'aware' of it when watching a film whereas this time I forgot completely about it until I took the specs off to go to the toilet at one point and was appalled at how flat the raw image looked. As an immersion device this was definitely the most effective use of 3d I've ever experienced due largely to the relative subtlety of it.

Watched "All This Mayhem" the other night. Really, really good feature length documentary about two Aussie brothers Ben and Tas Pappas, from a rough background they grew up skateboarding together and became some of the best vert skaters in the world. All the while being pretty fucking nuts and taking loads of drugs. They were the antithesis of the whole horrible corporate X-Games scene yet they were also competing in it.

Best bit was their confrontation with birdman, the clean-cut Tony Hawk. Who came up to them after a contest sulking and saying that he thought he should have won. "Yeah, fack off Hawk ya wanker, ya can't even flip yer board yer fackin' old cunt".

It all gets a bit less funny after that, though.

I've watched Jupiter Ascending.

It's utterly terrible garbage. Just as something is about to happen that guy (the one with a bland name and is the hunk of the moment) saves the (useless) woman (played by that hottie of the minute).

Useless woman continually saved by macho man time and time again. Utterly horrible bullshit. Probably written and directed by some very insecure man.

No one can act, the cast a shambles, the action is terrible, the set pieces boring, the story is utter nonsense with no redeemable qualities ... yet the budget was probably massive.

Don't watch this unless you hate yourself and you've got a spare 2 hours of self harm to fit in but you can't find a sharp knife.

DUFUQ EDIT: Did I just read that The Matrix brothers did this!? oh. Dear.

Talking of Sam Jacko, KINGSMAN is the tits. It's utterly awesome. So awesome, in fact, that I might go cinema and watch it without the Korean subtitles. It's like John Wick meets James Bond meets every 'coming of age' film ever. It's like The Hunger Games/The Maze Runner/The Divergent//The something/The something else but actually really really REALLY good. It's sweary and violent so it's actually like Kickass. Y'know, the good one, before it took a rapid nosedive. So, yeah, watch it now.

We watched Locke tonight, really good. Stars Tom Hardy, nobody else on screen, a character study I suppose you would call it. But quite an achievement to make a compelling film where nothing happens except a Welsh bloke talking on the phone.

Trying to find some decent sci fi recently so had a go at some less mainstream stuff.

Europa Report was utter tosh. If you've sprung for the cost of the south african guy from Elysium and District 9 at least give him a script to work with, and spend at least a few thousand pounds on the effects. Utter gash.

Last Days On Mars, half way through, seems to be ok but fairly middle of the road horror film that happens to be on mars.

Post subject:  Re: The Movie topic

The other day I fancied watching a horror film.

I don't really enjoy scary monster type horrors (not scary), or jumpy horrors (cheap), but wanted either a psychological horror or thriller.

So, i set Russel about with the task of Netflix-ing us up.

he failed miserably, and instead found a film called 'The Mist' (from a Stephen king novella).

It was bad. And though it could have been a 'so bad it's good' way, it was actually so bad that it came all the way back out of so bad it's good and became really bad.

It's Tremors, but mixes giant rubber monsters, some CGI awfulness relatively early on, and then there are some better CGI monsters. But it's awful.

Saving grace is the final scene, because it didn't wimp out, at least.

Post subject:  Re: The Movie topic

I 'loved' The Mist. In that it was a excellently tense emotional ride. That super religious woman made me hate a fictional character in a way I didn't know was possible.

Author:  Hearthly [ Tue May 12, 2015 8:51 ]
Post subject:  Re: The Movie topic

I must also disagree with Mimi and thought The Mist was fantastic, slightly dodgy CGI aside.

I believe the story behind it is that Darabont totally refused to compromise on the film or its ending, and therefore had a substantially smaller budget to work with than he was supposed to have, hence the often 'not brilliant' special effects. (It's unfortunate that the first CGI effect is also by far the worst.)

As a film though I felt it was great, with really strong performances across the board, and like a lot of the best horror films, the real threat is humanity to itself.

Absolute gutpunch of an ending too.

Stephen King praised it as well, saying that it's the ending he'd had given the story if he'd have thought of it at the time.

Author:  Mimi [ Tue May 12, 2015 9:23 ]
Post subject:  Re: The Movie topic

maybe I watched a different version? I didn't think it was an intense emotional ride at all.

There were some good performances: the religious woman, the next door neighbor, a few others, BUT I thought the acting from the main guy (the illustrator dad) was awful. it was so flat and the acting equivalent of painting by numbers.

Also the monsters were rubbish, and the monsters so predictable that i started being able to guess what the 'next' monster was.
