I thought the Universe The Purge was in was fascinating, but the film itself was pretty dull.
I've not seen anarchy.

The Fault in Our Stars is a nice sad melancholy story about two teenagers falling in love.

I decided on a whim to go and see the new Sin City film so walked practically straight out of work into that. Really though it should be called Eva Green Is Really Hot: The Movie because that's blatantly what the producers wanted you to take away from it. Indeed I wouldn't be entirely surprised to find out that it's origin came when they were editing together their already-shot visual paean to her mostly naked body and one of them said, "Hey, y'know we could add some other actors to this, maybe hang a story round it and turn it into an actual film!" Apart from that the visual design of it's stunning, the plot has zero depth, the men are all tortured thugs and literally every single female character is either a stripper, a prostitute or a murdering gold-digger. So pretty much exactly what I expected. Verdict: Eva Green's boobs out of ten.

Just be aware that, naked Eva Green aside, it's really pretty boring.

I quite liked it. It looks good. That was enough. I can see how it would be dull to a lot of people though.

I just watched THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY.

A sort of old-fashioned, slow-burn thriller set in Greece in the 1960's with solid acting from Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst and some young bloke I've never heard of.

Not exactly gripping but well-made and enjoyable. 7/10.

Watched "Gravity" last night. I really don't get why this was so raved about. It was a halfway decent visual spectacle, but honest to god every 5 minutes or so either my wife or I were compelled to say "Sandra Bullock.... IN SPAAAAAAAACE", as it was just so ridiculously that.

Also slightly odd for her to convert from "I'm sick just standing still" to
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
"I can use a fire extinguisher to jet around space".
Daft.

Highlight - Mrs K: "That's just gratuitous semi-nuddy Sandra Bullock". Me: "There's no such thing as gratuitous semi-nuddy Sandra Bullock". Maybe that was the philosophy for the whole film.

I'm genuinely curious how a film that's entirely about an astronaut in space manages to cram in a scene where the lead actress gets semi-nude. Seriously, what the fuck?

(a) Patriarchy or (b) that astro-people are actually in real life in their kecks under the space suits.

On this occasion I'm going with (b).

I saw Lucy last night.

I would advise that you do not go and see Lucy.

Not only is the premise bollocks and predicated on an urban myth but the execution of the concept is like a B movie version of one of the shitter Matrix movies.

Oh and at the beginning there's some of the most hamfisted "LOOK AT THIS IMAGERY. HERE. LOOK AT IT" which is then dropped because Luc Besson seems to have realised it's fucking stupid.

Oh and the dialogue is so bad not even Morgan Freeman can deliver it with any conviction.

I went to see it with a mate that I owed a favour because I'd seen Guardians of the Galaxy with someone else. He now owes me a gold Rolls Royce.

I saw Before I Go To Sleep this week. It wasn't very good. Unless you like to watch Nicole Kidman snivel and whimper for 90 minutes. Also features Nicole Kidman recording herself on a camera that is turned off.

Then I saw Million Dollar Arm which was cheesy and obvious (and based on a true story!). It was satisfying but maybe could be accused of casual racism and white saviourism. Still I think it didn't mean any harm and was just a bit of fluff really.

Really bugged me that (unless I missed it) they never said what would happen if he didn't die. What if he simply went and hid somewhere safe for a few days?

I don't think Tom Cruise was awful in it, but probably would have enjoyed it more with someone else in his role.

The whole setup and structure of it wasn't all that interesting tbh.

I think this kind of story where it is repeating the same actions over and over again work a bit better in a small confined location, be it a small town gripped by a blizzard, or a train bound for explosion. The possibility space of "A huge battle across Europe" has a bit too much scope for "Wait why didn't he try one of the many alternatives available to him?".

I thought they did - he would keep the ability to reset the day, but the day he can reset is only the one he's in - so if he hid until the next day the entire human invasion force would have be wiped out on the beaches and he wouldn't be able to undo it.
