Double-ha! I was just coming here to post exactly that after reading more of Cynthia Rothrock's wiki page.

I did think about her after her turn in the Red films. Sigourney Weaver would be a good fit as well after all her action-y stuff in Aliens.

The reason? Females tend to like older men much more than Males like older women. Know your audience.

Doing an action film doesn't make you an action star though. Most of the women listed here have gone on to more highbrow careers and I suspect would laugh in the face of someone asking them to do the Expendables. Other than Rothrock and Neilsen :)

Nah, it never really suited her apart from Aliens. Look at ARes, for example.

I concur, although I'm even later to watching the film than you :)

It doesn't fire on all of its cylinders all of the time, but it followed through on its convictions right to the end and ended up as a genuine tragedy I think, albeit one with many dark laughs along the way - you kind of know where it's going to end up and that's what made it so sad in the final analysis.

I find Chris Morris' work harder to watch/listen to as I get older, not because it's any less brilliant, but because I increasingly realise how painfully close to the truth he gets and it's not always a comfortable realisation.

But yes, a fine film, and superb performances all round from the cast.

Just finished watching Prometheus and actually really enjoyed it. The characterisation was all over the map--not least the engineer--and the 'why the fuck is that person doing/not doing that?!' factor was pretty high, but I was gripped by it pretty much all the way through. I'm trying not to think too much about it as I don't think it really stands up to much analysis; unless a sequel comes along and works some kind of narrative fucking voodoo to tie it all up. I did like the concept of
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
the aliens ending up being a combination of Engineer and human DNA via some really fucked up and horrible pregnancy/weaponised mutating goo
but it doesn't entirely tie up and seems more like someone thought it would be a cool idea so they found a way to whack it in there. I mean
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
the worms we saw mutated initially became, well, mutated worms so why would her 'child' be a weird octopus thing?
Although typing this up has made me realise that
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
the octopus baby is a proto-facehugger
which really should've occurred to me at the time!

Yeah, having read a different list of the changes that were made it does seem like the original script would've made much sense of the character's motivations which was blatantly lacking in a lot of cases in the version we actually got.

Now You See it - This starts off promisingly enough, but then loses its way a bit. There's enough charisma in each of the characters to pull through the scenes, but I found myself a bit beildered as to what was going on for teh final two thirds. Stuff was happening, but there ws no real indication why it was happening. It was as if the film was originally written from someone else's viewpoint, and the reengineered to be more about other people, or they forgot an entire act. Anyway, it's compentently done and entertaining enough, if you take it on a scene by scene basis, and suspend your disbelief. However, if you want afilm about magic with Michael Caine in it, The Prestige is a much better bet.

"The Conjuring" is a solid horror film.

It's unoriginal (typical haunted house / possession type set-up you've probably seen many times before).

It's really well done though, has solid acting & doesn't out-stay it's 2 hour run-time.

8/10 if you like this sort of thing.

:this:

Watched it last night and whilst it's totally unoriginal and even uses such staples as mysteriously banging doors and noises from places there shouldn't be noises coming from, it's so well crafted and put together that you can totally forgive it.

Also helps that none of the characters do anything stupid just for the sake of the story, and all the protagonists are well written and acted.

Basically a very solid film, I'd go as far as 9/10 if you like this sort of thing.

There's a spin-off a-comin'.

Under the Skin is a film about looking at a naked/semi naked Scarlet Johansen, and then watching her pick up unsuspecting Scottish blokes to "Come back to my place".

It's boring as hell. I stopped watching half way through.

Nothing about this film sounds bad.

In other news, I took Zioette to see Maleficent today and we both really enjoyed it. If anything, I was even more into it than she was. Angelina Jolie is incredible in the role, but it's also quite a cool little twist on the plot of the original Sleeping Beauty. You can see the twist at the end coming a mile off, but it's not any less enjoyable as a result. Very impressed, definitely a future Blu Ray purchase (for when Zioette visits, obviously! :p )

I saw How to Train your Dragon 2 at the weekend with Shorts.

Whilst it looks good and has some better huge monster fights in it than Pacific Rim the funny bits are massively laboured and Cate Blanchett's Scottish accent is actually worse than Simon Pegg's.

If your kids nag you to see it I would just try and find another showing of the Lego Movie if I were you.

Rock and Rolla - If you set your expectations low you'll like this. It's amusing and wry enough, but has shades of the LongGood Friday about it. I say 'shades' I mean, it's pretty much "The Long Good Friday". Mr Madonna took the Lock, Stock characters, stuck them in suits and did gangster film.

I mean that not in a philosophical sense (although it does have a fair bit of that in it), but more the little details that will go unnoticed by most viewers (not just kids either, some adults :P) Some obvious, some not so obvious.

e.g. despite it being entirely CGI, lots of the bricks in the movie have fingerprints or scratches on them to make it look like they're well used.

And the bricks in Cloud Cuckoo Land being the ones that the kid's Dad had put aside to let him play with, which is why it was seen as a safe haven with none of the oppression of Lord Business's side.

I didn't catch half of it when I watched it, it was only reading through a thread on SomethingAwful's film forum where lots of the dots started to get joined up.

I've so far only seen the first half of the Lego Movie - I got it to watch with Zioette on Friday but we both fell asleep (not through boredom - I was just that tired). I really should watch it in full soon. In a worrying glimpse into my future, Zioette looked at me like I was some crazy old man when I told her I'd not already seen it. She's five.

There's also the fact that it was basically an hour and a half advert for Lego, but at the same time managed to be a critique of their business model being over-reliant on licensed sets.

Um... Seems The Expendables 3 has leaked online weeks before it's due to arrive at cinemas anywhere.

It's a high quality dvd-screener with no watermarks, no "property of" messages etc. (apparently !)

Think the last time this happened was with the Wolverine movie back in 2009 (difference being that the Wolverine movie was a "work-print" with missing special FX, but this is the complete finished film).

The distributors ain't gonna be happy !
